TechNews - Engineers boost CPU/GPU speed 21%

Engineers boost CPU/GPU speed 21%, could be a glimpse of AMD's future -
North Carolina State University
researchers have discovered a method of boosting processing performance by more than 21%
. Although many processing designs by Intel, AMD and ARM house CPU and GPU cores in the same package, the components still function mostly independently.
Motherboard prices expected to increase 10% by next quarter -
Thanks to increasing world market prices of copper, the major retail motherboard manufacturers are looking at
increasing their motherboard prices by about 10 percent
or so come April. This is bad news for Intel, as this will end up coinciding with Intel's launch of its Ivy Bridge processors and the new 7-series chipsets.
Corsair Force Series 3 and Force Series GT SSD Tested -
Corsair has met a good mark with their
Force Series 3 and Force Series GT offerings
. While the performance is inline with other models sporting the stock SandForce firmware, where they win folks over is with the agressive pricing and broad range of capacity available across both product lines. Cost/GB figures approaching the $1/GB mark is definitely something we want to see for SSD adoption to improve, and Corsair is absolutely delivering in that respect.
Intel 520 Series 240GB Review -
Any which way you cut it, the Intel 520 series drives deliver performance that allows it to fit right into the upper crust of the Sandforce-equipped comparison field. In many of the tests the drive was in the top two or three drives tested and seemed to excel in the write testing. In the ATTO testing the drive
easily reached its rated speeds of up to 550MB/s reads and 520MB/s write
. The Sandforce controller and low cost 25nm NAND have proven to be an excellent combination so far. Long term reliability has been a concern with the lower total life cycles of the cells in the NAND. Intel worked closely with LSI, who now owns Sandforce, to develop a firmware that delivered long-term reliability and has confidence enough in the product and process that they offer the 520 series drives with a 5 year warranty. Something that brings a little piece of mind to the thought of spending just over $500 for a 240GB drive.
Windows 8 ARM to include Office 15 apps -
Microsoft used its official
Windows 8 blog site to announce
that the ARM port of Windows 8 is still planned to be released at the same time as the x86 version of the PC operating system. The biggest announcement today as far as Windows on ARM (WOA) is concerned is that the next version of Microsoft Office will be included in all Windows 8 ARM ports.
Windows 8 UI is dropping the 'Start' button -
Microsoft has removed the 'Start' menu button from its upcoming Windows 8 operating system, according to a consumer preview released earlier this week.
The leaked screenshot, obtained by PCbeta
, reveal that Microsoft has removed the button. This was probably done as part of Microsoft's Metro-style UI effort to make the user interface more intuitive across multiple devices. While the Start button may be gone, the button's core functionality will be retained using a 'hot corner'. The hot corner, which you activate by either touching or mousing over one of the screen's four corners, will supposedly activate a start-style menu screen when the operating system is both desktop and Metro UI mode. The Live Bar, which allows you to pin frequently used programs to, will continue being used in Windows 8, according to the report.
Dropbox Handing Out 5GB Storage with Android Beta App -
I really like my
Dropbox
. It's just so convenient having my files sync'd up to the cloud. It's great to have a public folder for sharing larger files with friends and colleagues too. Now, the Dropbox Android app has been updated to a new beta version and guess what? They'll give you 5GB free for trying. The main reason for the beta is to work out the kinks, but you need users to encounter those kinks for you to fix them. That's why they're encouraging more people to get the new Android app. Note: You don't get the 5GB of cloud storage right from the get-go. Instead, you get 500MB on the first sync. After that, you need to automatically upload additional chunks of 500MB to grow your account in 500MB increments.
FBI Admits Anonymous Snooped Conference Call -
The FBI has admitted
that the Hactivist group Anonymous was able to break security protocols and listen in on a conversation between the Agency and UK Police concerning what else, but the group Anonymous itself. At the very least, such an intrusion is an embarrassment for the FBI, which should be securing its conference call lines ;-)
Google Wallet Hacked Again -
This is a demonstration of the
security vulnerability in Google Wallet
. This is a pretty large security hole and hopefully Google gets this fixed ASAP.
Germany Bans Apple's iCloud; iPhone 4, iPad 2 Spared From Second -
Again, Germany, by far, has appeared the most willing to ban
both Android and Apple products. Due to that, both sides have focused their efforts on German court. Apple has at least two suits against Motorola. The German court is also preparing to hear new suits and countersuits between Apple and Samsung. Apple vs. HTC suits are also pending. The situation in Germany has devolved under a bewildering mess, but as far as the available information indicates, the only thing that remains officially banned at this point is the original Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 -- although the iCloud/MobileMe could soon join it.
Panasonic Forecasts Staggering $10B Annual Loss -
It's been a really tough year all around for Japanese electronics companies; especially hard hit has been Panasonic. The electronics company is
projecting a loss of $10.2 Billion dollars
for the coming year, triggering a restructuring of the company. Panasonic will join Japanese rivals Sony and Sharp in trying to revamp and restructure its business to achieve profitability again.

Gadget Swapping Done With Swap-O-Matic Vending Machine -
The Swap-O-Matic is a vending machine
that is unlike anything else I've ever happened across. Instead of bombarding us with soda, candy, or chips, the Swap-O-Matic lets us trade out an old item that we no longer want in exchange for a new one.
The Future of Warfare Is Inside Your Head (video) -
Interview with Professor Rod Flower FRS
, chair of the Royal Society's new report. Scientists are hopeful that advances in our understanding of the human brain will improve the lives and performance of the UK's armed forces however they have warned that careful consideration should be given to how research is prioritised so as not to come at a cost to other applications.

A Swarm of Nano Quadrotors (video) -
Developed by the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception Lab (GRASP),
these nano quadrocopters (or quadrotors, if you prefer)
are able to fly in various complex formations, navigating through the environment with complex 'autonomous swarm behavior.' The very sound of the swarm in the video below gives me chills.

ggrobot> Engineers boost CPU/GPU speed 21%, could be a glimpse of AMD's future
AMD lags so much behind that this 21% will be barely enough to catch up. An overclock yields better results anyway.
ggrobot> Motherboard prices expected to increase 10% by next quarter
It's ok, just remember that you will need to sell that crap. But, I was not planning on buying anyway.
ggrobot> Windows 8 UI is dropping the 'Start' button
Finally. But don't forget to patch it out from the old ones!
ggrobot> Dropbox Handing Out 5GB Storage with Android Beta App
"In he cloud" LOL Cloud is a myth created by marketing people.
ggrobot> FBI Admits Anonymous Snooped Conference Call
Ouch. What can I say? You mess with the wrong people, you get what's coming to you.
ggrobot> Google Wallet Hacked Again
Gioogle apps are junk overrated by the geeks who created it in order to get people use it - so Google can mine your data and the US government knows exactly what you're doing. The father you stay away from Google apps, the better off you are.
ggrobot> Germany Bans Apple's iCloud; iPhone 4, iPad 2 Spared From Second
I wonder when Apple realizes that their crap won't fly everywhere.
ggrobot> Panasonic Forecasts Staggering $10B Annual Loss
I just bought a Lumix FZ150. Figures.
ggrobot> Unexpected Accident at electric plant in Saint-Petersburg, Russia

I usually upgrade hardware every 2-5 years - based on the demands on the software. Since most software runs fine on the hardware I have, I am not planning an upgrade any soon. The most demanding software are games, but now that they come via Steam, Origin or <younameit crappy online distribution> I am not buying any of those anymore. The only thing I need is bigger HDDs - say, 8 of those 4GB drives, but I ain't paying more than a 100$ for them - so I wait year or two.
Granny
could
use a new PC, but I'm sure as hell that she ain't getting it until the prices go down.

I need some more here as well and agree over a hundred dollars isn't worth it.
