Asus Intros Portable 18.4" AIO Android PC
- Is it a big tablet or a small, portable all-in-one PC?
Asus is calling its new 18.4 inch P1801-T the latter
, indicating that it fuses together the power of an entry-level AIO desktop with the flexibility of a multi-touch tablet. What's more, it uses Android 4.2 "Jelly Bean" as the operating system, thus blurring the line between mainstream desktop and tablet even further. The company was heavy on the bloat and light on the actual details in its announcement. The device will sport an 18.4 inch IPS screen with a Full HD resolution, 10-point multi-touch capability, and 178 degree viewing angles. This screen will be powered by Nvidia's Tegra 3 SoC which is likely to keep the overall cost down given the more-powerful Tegra 4 chip has a higher pricetag.
Samsung SSD 840 EVO Review: 120GB, 250GB, 500GB, 750GB -
The EVO boasts hardware AES-256 encryption
, and has its PSID printed on each drive label like Crucial's M500. In the event that you set and lose the drive's encryption key, you can use the PSID to unlock the drive (although all data will be lost). At launch the EVO doesn't support TCG Opal and thus Microsoft's eDrive spec, however Samsung tells us that a firmware update scheduled for September will enable both of these things - again bringing the EVO to encryption feature parity with Crucial's M500. As one of the world's prominent DRAM makers, it's no surprise to find a ton of DRAM used to cache the firmware and indirection table on the EVO. DRAM size scales with capacity, although Samsung tosses a bit more than is necessary at a couple capacity points (e.g. 250GB). Prices are a bit higher than the outgoing Samsung SSD 840, which makes sense since we're looking at the beginning of the cost curve of a new process node. Crucial's highly sought after $600 960GB M500 seems finally back in stock just in time for the EVO to go head to head with it.

Ubuntu Edge Hits $3 Million In A Day -
This good looking device is
the Ubuntu Edge
, a 'super-phone' powerful enough to give you a full Ubuntu desktop when connected to an external monitor. So it will be 'the world's first truly converged' device, according to Canonical. Of course, getting there is the hard part. Canonical doesn't exactly have a giant bag filled with countless million, so instead they have started a $32 million crowd-funding campaign at indiegogo to make the Ubuntu Edge a reality. At the time of writing this story, they have managed to raise more than $3,663,765 (within a day) with 30 days left. The concept device was available for the 24-hour introductory price of $600, but now it's $830 per device (plus $30 if you are not in the US and the UK).
AT&T Adds Options to Mobile Share Plans -
AT&T today added two, lower-cost options to its Mobile Share plans. Beginning July 26,
AT&T customers can choose
Mobile Share plans with as little as 300MB of data for $20 per month. AT&T also added a 2GB monthly option to bridge the gap between its 1GB and 4GB plans. The 2GB plan costs $50 per month. AT&T's Mobile Share plans offer unlimited voice and messaging, and then shared data between two or more devices. Each device carries a base charge to be added to the Mobile Share plan. AT&T's Mobile Share plans offer up to 50GB of data per month.

of their upcoming handset.
Major SIM Card Security Flaw Uncovered -
According to the paper,
the newly discovered encryption hole allows the attacker to obtain the SIM card's 56-digit key
. Nohl said that he was able to acquire a key by sending the target device an SMS using a false signature for the device's wireless carrier. Typically, both the device and wireless carrier verify their identities by comparing digital signatures. If a device recognizes a false signature, it will end transmission.
Feds put heat on Web firms for master encryption keys -
The U.S. government has
attempted to obtain the master encryption keys
that Internet companies use to shield millions of users' private Web communications from eavesdropping. These demands for master encryption keys, which have not been disclosed previously, represent a technological escalation in the clandestine methods that the FBI and the National Security Agency employ when conducting electronic surveillance against Internet users. If the government obtains a company's master encryption key, agents could decrypt the contents of communications intercepted through a wiretap or by invoking the potent surveillance authorities of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Web encryption -- which often appears in a browser with a HTTPS lock icon when enabled -- uses a technique called SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer.
Digital Carjackers Show Off New Attacks -
Stomping on the brakes of a 3,500-pound Ford Escape
that refuses to stop–or even slow down–produces a unique feeling of anxiety. In this case it also produces a deep groaning sound, like an angry water buffalo bellowing somewhere under the SUV's chassis. The more I pound the pedal, the louder the groan gets–along with the delighted cackling of the two hackers sitting behind me in the backseat. Luckily, all of this is happening at less than 5mph. So the Escape merely plows into a stand of 6-foot-high weeds growing in the abandoned parking lot of a South Bend, Ind. strip mall that Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek have chosen as the testing grounds for the day's experiments, a few of which are shown in the video below. (When Miller discovered the brake-disabling trick, he wasn't so lucky: The soccer-mom mobile barreled through his garage, crushing his lawn mower and inflicting $150 worth of damage to the rear wall.)
Rubbee: Turn Your Bicycle Electric In Seconds -
Weighing in at 6.5 kg,
the waterproof Rubbee
is powered by a 14.4-volt 280-Wh battery pack and it can be attached to a seatpost via a quick release lever. The Rubbee's roller, made from a "special polyurethane compound mix", rests on top of the rear tire. The material ensures good grip between the tire and the roller and there won't be too much of wear as well. The roller will always be in contact with the tire (rubbing all the time, so Rubbee) due to a shock absorber-like arm. According to its creators, in 'motor only' mode (without you pedaling) Rubbee will deliver a top speed of 25 km/h – or about 15mph. Rubbee also gives 800 watts of peak power and has a range of 25 km on average. When totally depleted, the battery pack can be juiced up fully in two hours.
NASA Trying To Build A Warp Drive? -

Apathy Curve
(11:39 PM CEST - Jul,25 2013 )
The Batman/Superman mashup movie could be cool. The more so because as I remember it, their encounter in the Dark Knight graphic novels involved them beating the snot out of each other. It's been almost 30 years though, so maybe I'm not remembering it right. I've still got those books in bags up in the attic somewhere... I think.
