TechNews - Building a 4K Ultra HD Gaming PC - tech
(hx) 07:58 PM CEST - May,10 2014 - Post a comment / read (18)
  • DDR4 Memory for Desktops Expected in Q3 - Crucial will break with tradition this summer and ship the new DDR4 memory modules for both servers and desktops simultaneously. PCs will be faster and more power efficient with DDR4, which provides 50 percent more memory bandwidth than DDR3 and 35 percent more power savings.
  • Building a 4K Ultra HD Gaming PC - What does it take to put together a 4K-ready gaming PC? Let's find out, with a little help from AMD.
  • Opera 21 Launches For Windows and Mac - If you are in the market for a new browser, Opera has just released version 21, bringing with it much higher browsing speed and a host of fixes and improvements.
  • Sprint Turns to Throttling to Manage Network Congestion - Beginning in June, Sprint will slow down the browsing speeds available to the top 5% of its customers in congested regions. The change applies to Sprint's post- and pre-paid customers. Some customers have already received text messages explaining the change. Sprint explained the change will affect the top consumers of mobile data, but only when they are in a congested area. This change "will enable us to provide more customers with a high quality data experience during heavy usage times," said Sprint in a statement provided to FierceWirelessTech. "Once the customer is no longer connected to a congested cell site, or the site is no longer congested, speeds will return to normal." Sprint has long marketed "unlimited data" as a way to differentiate itself from its competitors, all of which sell data but the bucket. Sprint's pre-paid arms, Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile USA, have long throttled customers who exceed certain usage amounts. This marks the first time Sprint will throttle its own-branded customers. According to Sprint, it developed "fairness algorithms" on both its CDMA and LTE networks to "dynamically allocate available bandwidth in a way that is fair to all users." Sprint further noted that the change isn't being implemented due to sudden spikes in traffic, but instead reflects a continuing increase in usage.
  • Router company Mediabridge banned from Amazon after harassing - A reviewer on Amazon gave Mediabridge's Medialink Wireless-N Broadband Router a one-star review, warning potential users that the device left his "connection crawling more than 25 feet" from the router. This seemed strange for a product which, at the time, had an impressive 95% satisfaction rate. Not long after submitting it, the reviewer posted on reddit's /r/legaladvice community saying that he had received a threatening letter from Mediabridge. The letter demanded the reviewer agree to never purchase any Mediabridge products, never publicly comment online about Mediabridge products, and to take down the Amazon review immediately. The company stated its intention to sue the reviewer if its demands were not met. The post, which reached reddit's front page, prompted hundreds of outraged redditors to post one-star reviews on the products page, pushing its total ratings down to mediocre levels. Misguided redditors also inadvertently brigaded the product page of a Tenda router, which bears stunning similarities to the Mediabridge model, and the Amazon page for Medialink, an unrelated company.
  • Russia Hangs Adults-Only Rating on The Sims 4 - The Russian government in its infinite wisdom, has chosen to rate The Sims 4 at 18+, effectively restricting game play to anyone other than the adult gaming population.
  • Someone Built A Bird Simulator For The Oculus Rift - For the small price of looking like an idiot, you too can know what it feels like to fly like the birds :-D
  • It's Really, Really Easy To Break Into Nearly Any Suitcase - So essentially theres no point in having a lock....
  • A Working Prototype Of Cyclops's Eye Lasers - Better than Google Glass :-D
  • Netflix increases streaming cost by $1 - According to an email that was sent out to its customers, the price of a monthly streaming subscription is increasing from $7.99/month up to $8.99/month. That's on the low end of what the company was considering doing, based on their previous earnings reports. On the bright side, Netflix is trying to build some goodwill by promising to lock in the price for current customers at $7.99 for an entire two years. Unlike cable providers, who routinely increase prices at the drop of a hat, this is a nice customer-friendly move by the company.
  • Which TV Shows Have Been Renewed, Which Have Been Canceled - Now is the time of year for TV fans to be a little nervous for news about their favorite shows - specifically, whether they'll make it to next season. The latest news? NBC canceled four series, ABC renewed a ton of shows, Fox just canceled four freshman shows, and The CW canceled three series. Find out what's already guaranteed to come back and what's gotten left on the chopping block so far.
  • A Million Ways To Die In The West - Red Band Trailer #2 (NSFW)  - Seth MacFarlane directs, produces, co-writes and plays the role of the cowardly sheep farmer Albert in "A Million Ways to Die in the West." After Albert backs out of a gunfight, his fickle girlfriend leaves him for another man. When a mysterious and beautiful woman rides into town, she helps him find his courage and they begin to fall in love. But when her husband, a notorious outlaw, arrives seeking revenge, the farmer must put his newfound courage to the test.
  • Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Official Trailer - A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species.
  • The Trailer For 'Snowpiercer' Is Nuts - Is this "The Hunger Games" on a frozen train, or a mobile class war? I'm not sure yet but it looks exciting and (hopefully) a little different from the usual tentpole summer shlock.
  • 7 Simple Photography Hacks - Make it look like you're a better photographer for almost no money. Now get shooting!
  • 60 Regional Foods You Shouldn't Eat Anywhere Else - Be warned: Rocky Mountain oysters are not oysters at all, and scrapple is disgusting
  • Jelena Jankovic - Madrid Open vine is just wonderful - Literally just turned TV on and JJ is doing this..LOL. Well, whatever that sound is. The polite clapping afterward. This Vine of Jelena Jankovic at the Madrid Open truly has it all.
  • Kimberley Garner Shoot At Santa Monica Beach - While most people throw on a pair of baggy trousers and an old T-Shirt when heading out for a work-out, Kimberley Garner chose a whole different look altogether last week. The former Made in Chelsea star looked stunning while showing off her enviable figure during a trip to California's Santa Monica Beach. The 24-year-old's midriff looked perfectly toned as she stepped out in not one, but two equally tiny outfits as she jogged along the sand.
  • Kangana Ranaut Hot GQ India Magazine Pictures - Kangana Ranaut sets the temperatures scorching with a sensual lingerie themed editorial for the May issue of GQ. Shot in Sri Lanka, Kangana wears a very s/m inspired corset. Styled by GQ Fashion Director Vijendra Bhardwaj and shot by Tarun Vishwa. Check out the behind-the-scenes video.

FYI, Firefox 29 is finally quick again!!

Koogle(04:55 PM CEST - May,11 2014 )
@lorcro2000 so have you seen what those mozillatards have done with firefox30 :D

firefox with extentions is better than anything, its just a shame its being turned into a pile of crap by idiots who just want to lobotomize it and make it look and work like that other dumbed down chrome garbage.

spectra9(08:10 PM CEST - May,11 2014 )
Opera is going south with the release of its Chrome wannabe. Opera 12 is an excellent browser, memory efficient and fast. Now it's just as bloated as Chrome but with much less features, very sad.

Firefox is also going south with its Australis incarnation.

Why are these developers keep turning a perfectly good browser into abominations like these? They all seem to have a burning desire to be like Chrome.

Thankfully, Firefox is open source, so I'll stick with Cyberfox/Palemoon for as long as I can, hopefully there remains some sane developers in this world.

Thankfully I don't quite agree with you about how bad it's getting - Opera took the entire browser and threw it away to start over on top of Chromium, and even now when they hit version 21 (or 22 in testing) it's a shadow of its old self. At least Aurora 31 still takes addons and acts mostly like Firefox...

Tom(02:42 PM CEST - May,12 2014 )
Been using Firefox for ages. I don't mind the new gui stuff, it's kinda a nice change. Firefox with the right addons is great and secure. I don't use Chrome unless I have too but Opera... yuck. Tried it a few times and thought, man was a POS.

gx-x(05:41 PM CEST - May,12 2014 )
what do you people find wrong with new firefox? I used to use extensions to hide menu bar. I mean seriously, ~25px of height to hold ONE button? Another 25px to tell me that I am looking at Firefox?(title bar) They just finally realized that themselves and fixed it.

@heretic:

"Jelena Jankovic - Madrid Open vine is just wonderful - Literally just turned TV on and JJ is doing this..LOL. Well, whatever that sound is."

She is saying "Ne" , literal translation would be "Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" :D

Koogle(11:46 PM CEST - May,12 2014 )
". I mean seriously, ~25px of height to hold ONE button"

That 25px to hold ONE button for you..

is for me to hold that ONE button + menu bar (with a custombutton that toggles it on/off) + bookmark menu bar with css styling to remove the bookmark names, so that it is just a bar of icon shortcuts and named dropdown bookmark menus.

Really vast improvement over the vanilla shite they package the browser in, if those shitting retards at mozzilatard corp actually sacked the retards who refere to themselves as designers and instead got proper gui experts in to make powerful customizing into something more user friendly like actually fking adding options to customize this stuff, instead of removing gui options and forcing people to actually dig into using extensions and css

instead they copy chrome stupid fking menu icon, dump it on the right side of the browser (total disregard to vast majority users who are so used to application menus being on the topright side) and make extra large fking icons out of the same stupid fking buttons.

honeslty these retarded asshats live in a world of there own down a shiticon valley.

I used to miss the title bar, but with ff3.5 the css improvement really made firefox gui great for customization.

the browser really is going down the toilet if stuff like userscripts, stylish, custom buttons broke

already plenty of good addons for firefox have started breaking down and the developers losing interest in having to fix it with ever stupid fking mozilla update. Ones like Downloader Manager Tweak https://addons.cdn.mozilla.net/img/uploads/previews/full/2/2984.png?modified=1331247702 which is a huge improvement over the existing shity download manager (customized with css and its even better looking and functional than the original)

shame really.. but yeh

"Opera took the entire browser and threw it away to start over on top of Chromium, and even now when they hit version 21 (or 22 in testing) it's a shadow of its old self. At least Aurora 31 still takes addons and acts mostly like Firefox..."

at least with Firefox they atleast maintain some concept of there web browsers power coming from its backlog of extensions that still mostly work through each update.

I could use the newer austragarbage gui firefox but really the time to redo the look and setup I have just ain't worth it (the fact an extension (classicthemerestorer) had to come out just remove and fix it is a joke, but extension developers willing to do that everytime mozilla make more stupid changes is going to push the patience of its most longterm fans and developers away from making other more useful extensions)

also that new chromified menubar is just so fking bad its a joke and an insult to anyone who doesn't need mega large fking icons to move about (even though I hardly ever use a menubar) the fact it exists and has replaced what was a perfectly menu system with 32x icons is a joke. Just another sign of the touchscreen tards have been screwing around, lets take our leading desktop browser and dumb it down like our shitty android browser.

gx-x(11:52 PM CEST - May,12 2014 )
Koogle, you can enable that bar in FF 29, rmb on empty space in tab bar and presto, all your bars are back if you want them.

Koogle(08:12 AM CEST - May,13 2014 )
I know you can still get the bookmark bar there, point is the entire gui is mess now with the changes some plugins that work but don't fit in anymore, when i updated my existing setup most the stylish css id/classes need to be redone and and a few other plugins have just fallen apart with the gui changes like personal titlebar and a few others, nothing that can't be fixed eventually but i can't be bothered doing it, and classicthemerestorer brings in its own changes which need styling to fit in, just waiting on plugins to update aswel really.

why bother doing the personal updates when 29 brings nothing but a dogshit gui, its easier to just stay with 28 until they actually put out an update that has worthwhile features/engine improvements that are worth upgrading to

Tom(03:46 PM CEST - May,13 2014 )
I can move most all icons minus the menu button and I'll bet it's done like that to be consistent with other devices, mobile/tablet. It would be nice though to move it all onto one side as per your preference. I like the new layout overall, it's cleaner and more screen for viewing pages.

Koogle(08:15 PM CEST - May,13 2014 )
Current...

What it looks like in FF29,

Missing icons, stylish css messed up, and a few extensions that don't work anymore.

And it only looks like that was after having to install another addon bar extension just to bring the addon bar back so that all the icons weren't sitting on the top addressbar, because some fukheads at moztardcorp have decided a status bar is not required. Despite implementing a statusbar many years ago, letting addon developers utilize it, then deciding to fuk them around again, and remove the statusbar in replace of an inferior crap addon bar that needed another extension just to bring it back to how a status bar used to work, and finally now removing the addon bar aswel.

The option for tabs below the addressbar is not no longer a gui option to select, because again some fucking retard thinks that tabs above the addressbar is better, fking clueless morons everything is upside down in there lalaland. Having tabbar above the addressbar, and whatever bar is below that just doesn't make any fking sense.. Its like the windows form tabs being deigned by a fking retard who thinks the content corresponding to that tab should be even further away from the tab control. The design language of such a change is just stupid.

And removing the status/addon bar saves hardly anything compared to what it provides. I have the addon bar for many things, the bottom right are commonly used plugins, page control etc, the right side is both for status feedback on page urls, pageloading status, and with [ctrl+f](toggle) an inpage search bar appears there.. very compact and pretty neat.

Compared to all the shitty ass defaults you can't get no better, but fuk heads at mozilla think by removing gui/options makes it better (and there idea of what customizability is a god damned joke), I can only guess that they are in actual fact they are just to damn fucking lazy and stupid to actually utilize a gui, provide useful features, and users with customizing options. And most importantly show the fking monkey noobs how to use such features in browser (when you startup ff29 for the first time it has some stupid ass arrow pointing out its joke of a new menubar (that has even less menu options than the old one just really fking oversized icons, god knows how the fking noobs will figure out where there old menubar and page options have disappeared to. I'd imagine most there targeted noob audience will just stick with chrome spyware shite anyway.

It's too easy to just make shit dumbed software and copy other useful fuck companies like google garbage that do the same hoping that the masses will like this dumbed down simpleton software that has only one advantage, it startup time LOADS really fast for the those with attention span of a fking ant.

Meanwhile my browser not only loads fast it actually has powerfeatures and looks nice. Its not really that hard to achieve and yet here have one of the worst fking updates to firefox I have ever seen.

So much stuff is broken in terms of the gui, with getting it back to how I had it. It's almost like I shouldn't bother and I won't until they put out a version worth with improvements worth the upgrading hassles.

And certainly not looking forward to more windowed dialogs like option screens, bookmark libraries etc being redesigned into to stupid page tabs (like the downloads list, etc google shity crhome option screen) its just fking dumb and less useful as you are stuck with having an browser frame and tab being used when most the controls and options provided are fine utilize a smaller screenspace within a windowed dialog that can be moved around. It only makes sense are shitty smartphone screens where small screenspace and no windowed layouts exist, hardly great for deskstop environments with large screenspace, movable windows and great for multitasking.

gx-x(09:39 PM CEST - May,13 2014 )
well i dont have thank kind of problems

btw that orange FF button in version before 29 will open menu list, no need to have all that in two places, anyway, nhf koogle but your browser is too clogged and bloated for my taste.

I very much appreciate the new "menu" icon that has all menus and things that most of us need in there no need to go to menu, then options, then add-ons for instance, just press new button and select addons. Also, it's customizable (not that I need that). Oh and last version of firefox had YT crash for me when I mess with dahsboard (notifications, conversations etc), 29 works fine, so big + from me for that.

Koogle(10:58 PM CEST - May,13 2014 )
but thats just it, there new menu doesn't actually have all the menus and options in there.. its got even less in it. just oversized icon shit

gx-x(11:42 PM CEST - May,13 2014 )
well it has everything I need, I never used half of those that are there by default. o.O to each his own I guess...

Koogle(02:19 AM CEST - May,14 2014 )
the print button, (no where is there print setup)

history button( but no where is the a bookmark button) you can have a history sidebar, but no longer can you have a bookmark sidebar ... how fking stupid is that.

you still need to enable the old filemenu for most stuff that would otherwise be in a appmenu

the whole thing is just fking half assed

gx-x(03:28 AM CEST - May,14 2014 )

dude, you can CUSTOMIZE the whole damn thing and put bookmarks, print, file menu, whatever, just click on customize and presto.

edit: print, seriously? I mean, I guess you COULD need it but as a person that deals with print daily, you are better off avoiding printing from the browser...

Koogle(04:04 AM CEST - May,14 2014 )
i had another look, yeh bookmarks icon and sidebar is there.. still the css changes are a mess to fix again
