  • AMD's Carrizo APU is coming in mid-2015, will share package with Beema successor - In the wake of a "Future of Computing" event held today in Singapore, John Byrne, senior VP and general manager of AMD's Computing and Graphics unit, has taken to YouTube to hype the firm's upcoming Carrizo APU. The Kaveri replacement targets "performance mobile" and all-in-one systems, and Byrne says Carrizo represents AMD's "biggest leap ever from an energy efficiency perspective." (PR)
  • Best Computer Monitors: November 2014 -  Price versus performance is certainly key in any display purchase decision. But it's also important to pick the right tool for the task. In related news, Samsung plans to release the "first-ever ultra-high-definition monitors" with support for the display technology in March 2015. Samsung's first FreeSync monitors will include the UD590, which will be available in 23.6" and 28" variants, as well as the UE850, which will come in 23.6", 27", and 31.5" flavors. The announcement doesn't outline specs, but "ultra-high-definition" usually means 4K, or 3840x2160. (2560x1440 is usually called QHD or WQHD.)
  • Apple Disables Trim Support On 3rd Party SSDs In OS X - One of the disadvantages to buying an Apple system is that it generally means less upgrade flexibility than a system from a traditional PC OEM. Over the last few years, Apple has introduced features and adopted standards that made using third-party hardware progressively more difficult. Now, with OS X 10.10 Yosemite, the company has taken another step down the path towards total vendor lock-in and effectively disabled support for third-party SSDs. We say "effectively" because while third-party SSDs will still work, they'll no longer perform the TRIM garbage collection command. Being able to perform TRIM and clean the SSD when its sitting idle is vital to keeping the drive at maximum performance. Without it, an SSD's real world performance will steadily degrade over time. What Apple did with OS X 10.10 is introduce KEXT (Kernel EXTension) driver signing. KEXT signing means that at boot, the OS checks to ensure that all drivers are approved and enabled by Apple. It's conceptually similar to the device driver checks that Windows performs at boot. However, with OS X, if a third-party SSD is detected, the OS will detect that a non-approved SSD is in use, and Yosemite will refuse to load the appropriate TRIM-enabled driver.
  • Microsoft confirms that Windows 10 kernel will be 10.0 - Developers preparing for Windows 10 should note that the Windows NT value in the UA string will change from 6.4 to 10.0 with the new release. If you have code that depends on the version number, we advise that you update to allow for the new value.

  • The Nexus 6 video walkthrough  - The Nexus 6 is a big, big phone. In fact, we've got no problem calling it a big Moto X, minus a few choice features. That's not to say it's a bad phone, it's just big. And did we mention it's big?
  • Motorola to Replace Some AT&T Nexus 6 Phones - Motorola today said it will replace a few hundred Nexus 6 handsets sent to some AT&T customers. "We delivered a small number of Nexus 6 smartphones with incorrect software to AT&T customers who pre-ordered," said Motorola in a statement. "The incorrect software prevents the phone from starting up properly. We will provide replacements for consumers whose phones are affected. The problem has been corrected and the phones currently shipping are fine." When asked, Motorola denied that shipments were halted or recalled because of the bug. The issue appears to only affect the AT&T variant of the Nexus 6. "If a consumer sees the 'welcome' after the first time they turn on the phone, then their device isn't affected and they should use it as normal," said Motorola in an email to Phone Scoop. "People can call [Motorola's] customer service if they have questions."
  • Nokia Releases Android Launcher, Debuts Tablet - Nokia today announced wide availability of the Z Launcher for Android devices. Nokia first debuted the Z Launcher earlier this year, but as a limited alpha. It is now available in beta form directly from the Google Play Store.
  • Human tissue printing service now available to the public - Organovo has just made their human tissue 3D printing technology available to the public. The printer itself, Organovo claims, eliminate the need to grow human tissues in vivo - that is, the tissues are "grown" in laboratory settings using things such as tests tubes and petri dishes.
  • Apple iPhone 6 Plus Camera Issue - Many users are reporting that their iPhone 6 Plus' camera is not working properly. And it seems that the optical image stabilizing tech is creating the issue. As you will see in the clip below, the video recorded by an iPhone 6 Plus is very, very wavy. The problem reportedly is not just with video recording. Many users are saying that their camera has become useless. But the good news is that the device's warranty has helped many iPhone 6 Plus users to get their devices or the camera module replaced. So Apple probably already knows about this problem.

In the video below, Priebe can be seen using the laser to pop balloons, light matchsticks, burn a hole on a plastic CD case, and cut a duct tape

I'm trying to fix everything. I've applied some unofficial security fixes to old phpbb 2.x. I don't believe it's safe anyway.

Looks like coding weeks for me...
