- Microsoft: Trade in your iPad, get a gift card worth at least
$200 - Microsoft has begun yet another promotional push. This
time, the company is
offering a gift card worth at least $200 to anyone who walks into a
Microsoft Store and trades in their iPad. The offer will be available
in "select Microsoft retail stores" across the U.S. and Canada, and it
will run until October 27. To participate, you must bring in a second-,
third-, or fourth-gen iPad with its power cord. The device
can't be password-protected. Microsoft doesn't say how much it will
offer for different versions of the Apple tablet, but it promises a
"minimum of a $200 gift card."
- Seagate to launch 5TB hard disk drives in 2014 - Faster a
portion of technology evolves, sooner it risks to hit a plateau. Hard
disk manufacturers are currently facing this challenge since 2010 when
they managed to fit 1TB of data per platter of a HDD. That's pretty
much the maximum limit and now the companies are up against the wall to
push the technology beyond the barrier. Western Digital is
experimenting with Helium filled drives to tackle the problem. On the
other hand, Seagate thinks its new technology called SMR is the answer
to all the troubles. Seagate, on Monday, announced it had already sold
1 Million drives using SMR and they'll sell 5TB hard disk drives from 2014 onwards.
Not only that they plan to sell 20TB HDDs by 2020.
- Apple announces low-cost iPhone 5C - Apple has
announced the iPhone 5C, a lower cost version of the iPhone
with a plastic exterior. Containing similar specs to the iPhone 5, this
is still a powerful device, but will sell at mid-range prices. The 5C
contains the same A6 processor as the iPhone 5 sported, and an 8MP
camera. Coming in five different colour choices, the scratch-proof
plastic case is slightly thicker than the iPhone 5 and 5S, but retains
a relatively minimal look that Apple are known for. This definitely
looks like a cheaper device, however, and is Apple's first plastic
covered product since the white Macbook was discontinued.
- Apple announces iPhone 5S - In addition to announcing the
iPhone 5C, Apple
also revealed the iPhone 5S at today's media event. As largely
expected, the iPhone 5S will have the same size and design and the
current iPhone 5 but will feature improved specifications and will be
available in three colors: silver, gold, and space gray. Internally,
the iPhone 5S will feature a 64-bit A7 processor that will be up to
twice as fast at CPU tasks. Another significant new feature is a "Touch
ID" capacitive fingerprint sensor built into the home button that's
capable of scanning sub-epidermal skin layers. Touch ID can be used to
unlock an iPhone and authorize iTunes purchases. The camera in the
iPhone 5S will have a new 5-element lens with a f/2.2 aperture and a
sensor that's 15% larger than the one in the current iPhone 5 and a
dual-LED "True Tone" flash that will adapt to the existing lighting to
provide better colors and more accurate skin tones. Other new camera
features include a burst mode capable of capturing 10 pictures per
second and slow-motion 720p video capture at 120 frames per second.

- Some Thoughts about the iPhone 5S Camera Improvements - With
the iPhone 5S camera, Apple makes a number of interesting changes that
I already touched on. Rather than march down the pixel size roadmap to
1.1µm (and beyond that the upcoming 0.9µm step) to either increase
pixel count with an equivalent sized sensor, or shrink the sensor and
optical stack and maintain the same number of pixels, Apple has chosen a strategy like HTC's and gone the
other way. Apple has increased pixel size to 1.5µm (from 1.4µm),
while keeping pixel count the same, thus creating a larger sensor
- Acer Liquid S2 smartphone with 4K video capture - Adding to
the line of the phablet market is the Acer Liquid S2. The
smartphone comes in with something we're seeing for the first time in
this segment of devices, 4K resolution video grabs. Now,
ultra-high-definition video does have its demand met by bigger screens
but the 6-inch phone we saw at IFA in Berlin this week had us
bedazzled. It offers a Gorilla Glass display at 368 ppi, records videos
at up to 60 frames per second, offers slow motion 4 times slower (take
that you new Apple phones), offers a 13-megapixel f2.2 camera with
profile settings, a panorama shot of up to 27-megapixels and a powerful
LED flash ring on the rear. Up front, there's a 2-megapixel 1080p
camera on the front for video chat. Besides the shutterbug delights we
have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor clocked at 2.2GHz, 2GB of RAM,
4G data speeds of up to 150Mbps, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac, NFC, GPS, a digital
compass, 16GB memory, memory card expansion up to 128GB (for the ultra
HD videos), Android 4.2.2 and apps including Polaris Office, Swype for
typing without taking your finger off the screen, and Evernote. It will
be available at the end of October for a yet-undisclosed price.
- LG G2 unboxing (video) - The LG G2 is a high-end Android smartphone
- an embodiment of cutting-edge hardware and precision-polished
software, sprinkled with a handful of innovative goodies all over. It
comes with top-of-the-line specifications, including a 5.2-inch, 1080p
display made using IPS LCD technology, a quad-core Snapdragon 800 chip
running at 2.3GHz, and 2GB of RAM. In terms of performance, the device
should rank among the best handsets to date. Further down the list we
have an advanced 13MP camera that stands out with cool features like
optical image stabilization and 1080p video capturing at 60 frames per
second. A notable multimedia feature is the support for 24-bit, 192kHz
audio.
- Xbox Music on iOS & Android vs. Windows Phone 8 &
Windows 8 - Microsoft released Xbox Music
apps for Apple's iOS and Google's Android in order to expand the
cross platform capabilities of their music subscription service once
known as Zune Pass. The service has been available on Windows, Windows
8, Xbox 360, Windows Phone and the old Zune players since forever, but
now you can finally use it on iOS and Android devices as well. How does
the experience compare though? Is it just as good or not quite?
- T-Mobile Gives Unlimited Customers More Hotspot Data - T-Mobile
has quietly
updated the mobile hotspot options available to customers who
choose its $70 Unlimited plan. The original $70 Unlimited plan provided
customers with unlimited talk, text, and web, but only 500MB of mobile
hotspot or tethering data. If customers wanted to use their smartphone
or tablet for tethering beyond 500MB per month, they had to pay
additional fees for a 2.5GB or 4.5GB allotments. Now, the $70 Unlimited
plan includes 2.5GB of mobile hotspot data. T-Mobile is offering 4.5GB
of mobile hotspot data for an extra $30 per month and 6.5GB of mobile
hotspot data for an extra $40 per month.
- NSA Can Spy on Smart Phone Data - SPIEGEL has learned from
internal NSA documents that the US intelligence agency has the
capability of tapping user data from the iPhone, devices using Android
as well as BlackBerry, a system previously believed to be highly
secure.

country house takes on a monstrous life of its own. Objects and
furniture attack the inhabitants, leaving 11-year-old Niamh the only
survivor of a bloody massacre that destroys her parents and her little
brother, Ciaran. The police ignore her when she tries to tell them
about the murderous rage of the house. She is taken in by family
friends who try to give her some semblance of a normal life. But Niamh
cannot find peace. All around her, signs of danger continue to manifest
a lurking violence that soon unleashes itself again...
- Ninja Shadow Of A Tear Trailer Scott Adkins - Casey Bowman
has finally settled down. He's happily married to Namiko (who is
pregnant with their first child), living in Japan and teaching at the
Koga dojo. While buying her a present, Casey is attacked by two punks.
He shrugs it off, assuming it to be a simple mugging. But when Namiko
is brutally murdered later that same night, Casey's world falls apart.
Stricken with grief and thirsty for revenge, Casey tracks down the two
thugs who tried to rob him, but they can't provide him with any clues
to his wife's murder. So Casey travels to Thailand, to the dojo of a
close friend. His grief and anger are taking control of him and he
lashes out while sparring with other students. When one of the students
is killed in the same way as Namiko, Casey finally gets the clues he
needs to track down his wife's killer and unravel a mystery of grudges
deep in the Burmese jungle.
