TechNews - AMD A10-7800 APU Tested - tech
(hx) 12:24 PM CEST - Aug,23 2014 - Post a comment / read (2)
  • AMD A10-7800 APU Review - Is this just another APU from AMD? Not quite. The A10-7800 has a different purpose than the flagship -7850K, and that's good news. AMD found the right spot between moderate performance and modest power consumption. As a result, the A10-7800 is a winner if you're building a well-balanced, low-cost PC where price, performance, and efficiency are well-balanced. Yes, you could easily build a faster system using a CPU and discrete graphics card, but it'd almost certainly pull more power from the wall, and would probably be pricier, too.
  • Haswell-E Core i7-5820K Will Only Have 28 PCI-Express Lanes - As it turns out, and as we already suspected, not all of the Haswell-E CPUs will have the same number of PCI-Express lanes. Both the Core i7-5960X and the Core i7-5930K will be able to address 40 PCI-Express lanes, but the cheapest Core i7-5820K will only have access to 28 lanes. TechPowerUp forum member "623" has seemingly confirmed this through leaked manuals of Gigabyte's X99 motherboards.
  • Samsung PN51F8500 Review: A 51-Inch Plasma HDTV With SmartHub - It boasts 3D, SmartHub 2.0, and superb image quality.
  • Microsoft pulls its August Windows update after users report crashes - Microsoft has pulled its August Update for Windows after users reported crashes and issues restarting their systems. The company is currently recommending users uninstall the update. Microsoft said that it discovered issues relating to four individual updates associated with the August Update: 2982791, 2970228, 2975719, and 297533. The updates addressed security and features, and began rolling out on August 2.
  • Hacking Gmail With 92 Percent Success - Researchers have identified a weakness in Android, Windows and iOS mobile operating systems that can be hacked 82% to 92% of the time. The researchers tested the method and found it was successful between 82 percent and 92 percent of the time on six of the seven popular apps they tested. Among the apps they easily hacked were Gmail, CHASE Bank and H&R Block. Amazon, with a 48 percent success rate, was the only app they tested that was difficult to penetrate.
Over 75000 jailbroken iOS devices fall prey to AdThief malware - A security researcher has revealed that over 75000 iOS devices have been infected by a malware known as AdThief or "Spad." iOS device users are often quick to jailbreak their devices, ignoring the security risks that come with exposing the system, in order to get more functionality out of their device. However, once again, a security risk associated with such devices has been exposed by a security researcher. According to the researcher, Axelle Apvrille, the malware targets various advertising SDKs and modifies the developer or promotion ID to match that of the hacker. Using this technique, the malware allows the hacker to gather all the revenue generated from the infected devices through advertisements. 15 advertising SDKs or adkits, including Google Mobile Ads and Weibo have been found to be affected by the AdThief malware. The researcher has managed to track down the author of AdThief online through some of the debugging information from the malware's source code. The developer, currently known by his online aliases "rover12421" and "zerofile," is revealed to be an Android developer who admitted creating the malware which he has now discontinued. The developer has said that he created only the basic ID replacement functionality and someone else might have continued the development. He has further denied spreading the malware that has affected a large number of devices and grabbed revenue from 22 million ads.
  • iPhone 6 rumored to include 128GB storage option and parked car locator - If the most recent rumors on the upcoming iPhone 6 are to be believed, then we can expect a 128Gb storage option for the new device. It's unclear if this will be limited to the iPhone 6L (the 5.5-inch version) or both, which includes a smaller variant at 4.7-inches. It's also believed that Apple will continue not to offer a microSD slot option, thus having to boost storage in this manner.
  • Sprint Intros $60 Unlimited Plan with Hardware Hitch - Sprint has announced a new unlimited plan that it says undercuts the competition. The plan, which will be available beginning August 22, provides a single line of service with unlimited talk, text, and data for $60 per month. Sprint claims the offering beats T-Mobile's best price by $20 per month, and that similar options aren't available from AT&T or Verizon Wireless. There is a catch. In order to qualify for the plan, customers need to either bring their own device, pay full retail for a device, or sign up for Sprint's Easy Pay financing plan. The Sprint $60 Unlimited Plan for single lines follows a complete overhaul of Sprint's family share plans, which offer savings to four or more lines of service.
  • Sprint announces attractive $100 Family Share Pack - Starting last Friday, customers will be able to sign up for Sprint's new Family Share Pack. This shared data plan offers 20GB of data - twice as much as AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon - for up to 10 lines for just $100 per month. And as an added bonus, Sprint is throwing in an extra 2GB per line for a limited time. Assuming you sign up with 10 lines, that's just $10 per month per line, each with 4GB of data and unlimited talk and text. Sprint is also offering up to $350 to entice families to break their existing contracts, a move popularized by rival T-Mobile not all that long ago. It certainly sounds like a great deal but there are a wealth of conditions that must be met in order to get the best pricing. By reading the fine print, we learn that the $100 per month offer is only available from August 22 through September 30, 2014. What's more, it only applies to customers switching to Sprint from a competing carrier. Additionally, all devices must be purchased through Sprint Easy Pay to qualify. Even if you do meet all of the above mentioned criteria, the $100 rate will expire at the end of 2015 at which time customers will be charged an access fee of $15 per month, per line. Ouch. Sprint promises more news is coming later this week regarding changes to plans for individuals.
  • Sprint Formally Debuts Sharp Aquos Crystal - Sprint today announced the Sharp Aquos Crystal, a mid-range handset that it will sell later this year. The Sharp Aquos features a nearly bezel-less design, with narrow edges running along the top and sides of the phone. The screen measures 5 inches and offers 720p HD resolution.
  • Most People Wouldn't Pay $235 A Year For An Ad-Free Web - I am shocked that no one wants to pay an extra $235 a year for an ad-free internet. :D
  • The Worst Product: Unpoppable Bubble Wrap - Fun time is over. Forever :(
  • Real-Time Face Projection Mapping - This is one way to do your makeup in the morning, but I'd probably use it to scare kids on Halloween :D
  • The World's First All-Electric Supercar - The Renovo coupe is pretty. And fast. And it doesn't use a drop of gasoline.
  • The Only Way To Steal This Bike Is To Break It - Yerka Project is a bicycle that can't be stolen without breaking it and is currently being developed by 3 Chilean students. This is their first fully functional prototype.

  • The Primary Instrument Of This Song Is A Car - Jonathan Kluth gets kudos for an interesting idea, and for pulling it off with flying colors. Maybe for the sake of it we could get him to cover "License and Registration."
  • Intelevator Intelligent Voice Activated Elevator - Funny Prank - What would you do if you were trapped in an "Intelevator" (Intelligent voice-activated elevator)?
  • Mark Ronson TED Remixed - Let's be honest: some TED talks can be tediously long and boring. Thankfully a catchy beat helps hold our attention.
  • The Equalizer Trailer - In The Equalizer, Denzel Washington plays McCall, a man who believes he has put his mysterious past behind him and dedicated himself to beginning a new, quiet life. But when McCall meets Teri (Chloe Grace Moretz), a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can't stand idly by -- he has to help her. Armed with hidden skills that allow him to serve vengeance against anyone who would brutalize the helpless, McCall comes out of his self-imposed retirement and finds his desire for justice reawakened. If someone has a problem, if the odds are stacked against them, if they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help. He is The Equalizer.
  • Automata Trailer - This looks like an interesting twist on Bladerunner and A.I!
  • Leaked: The Trailer For Tarantino's 'Hateful Eight' - Some intrepid hero (see: pirate) decided to film the trailer for this much-buzzed upcoming movie. There's no actual scenes from the film in this trailer, but the title cards are admittedly cool, and remind us of "Seven Samurai," which is probably the point.
