- Intel Says Silvermont Chips Will Be 3X Faster - Intel
has announced its next-generation mobile processor, code-named
Silvermont. The Silvermont processor will take advantage of Intel's
22nm TriGate system-on-a-chip manufacturing process to deliver
calculating speeds that are up to three times the rate of its
current-generation Atom processor. In addition to the boosted speed,
Silvermont processors are energy efficient and draw as little as
one-fifth the power of today's Atom chips while still maintaining a
consistent output. Intel suggested that the Silvermont chips would be
ideal for smartphones and tablets, and that Silvermont will serve as
the base for a number of mobile SoC's that Intel plans to introduce
this year. Intel's mobile lineup for 2013 includes quad-core Bay Trail
SoCs, which are scheduled to arrive in tablets by the 2013 holiday
season; and Merrifield SoCs, which will reach Intel's smartphone and
tablet hardware partners by the end of the year. The company did not
say when the Silvermont chips might reach production or appear in
consumer-grade devices.

- Amazon Jumps the Gun, Leaks 8-inch Windows 8 Tablet - Amazon
mistakenly listed an
Acer W3-810 which just so happens to be a non-existent Windows 8
tablet with an 8.1-inch 1280x800 display listed at $380 Bucks. The
Verge reports that the 1.1 pound tablet listing included a 1.8GHz
dual-core Intel Atom Z2760 (a Clover Trail chip, rather than an
upgraded Clover Trail+ or Bay Trail model), 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of
storage, as well as 2MP rear- and front-facing cameras and micro USB
and micro HDMI ports. Most of these specs are roughly identical to what
we saw in Acer's 10.1-inch Iconia W510, so the W3 should suffice for
most basic Metro and desktop apps as long as you're not doing work that
requires a fast graphics processor.
An Intel Atom Z2760 CPU? Yawn...:

- Microsoft confirms exploit in Internet Explorer 8 - Microsoft's
Security blog states the exploit could in theory be used to allow
for a "remote code execution if users browse to a malicious website
with an affected browser." Computerworld.com reports that the issue was
first identified by the security firm Invincea and has already been
used by hackers in attacks directed against the U.S. Department of
Labor and U.S. Department of Energy.
Microsoft is working to create a patch for IE8 that will close this
exploit. If users don't wish to upgrade their browsers, Microsoft says
some workarounds might help stop the issue. One is to set Internet and
local intranet security zone settings to high, and the other is to set
up IE8 to prompt users before running any Active Script type of program
or to simply disable Active Scripting entirely.
- Adobe abandons Creative Suite in favour of cloud offerings - Ten
years on from launching Creative Suite, its flagship collection of
digital editing software, Adobe
has decided to abandon it entirely in favour of its online
subscription service, Creative Cloud. In the past, the company offered
standalone versions of each program, offering incremental upgrades at
discounts if users owned previous versions. Now, however, Adobe will
force you to subscribe to a $49.99/month service in order to continue
receiving major updates. Adobe says Creative Suite 6 (the current
edition) will continue to be available for online purchase only, as the
company halted sales of boxed copies back in March. Whilst the software
will continue to receive major features and incremental performance
upgrades, it will not appear in the form of Creative Suite 6.5/7.
Instead, all apps will be newly branded as "CC" editions. This
includes: Photoshop CC, Dreamweaver CC, Illustrator CC, Premiere Pro
CC, Illustrator CC, InDesign CC, and so on.

- Investors to Nokia: Switch to Another Road - Nokia
CEO Stephen Elop is in the hot seat with investors and took fire at
yesterday's meeting from impatient shareholders who are waiting for the
company's fortunes to turn around. Elop announced Nokia's plans to
abandon Symbian, which he referred to as a burning platform, in
February 2011. Elop decided then that Nokia would use Microsoft's
Windows Phone platform for its smartphones moving forward. At the time,
he predicted that the turn-around would take two years. That time has
come and gone, and Nokia's share of the smartphone market is still
grim. "You're a nice guy, and the leadership team is doing its best,
but clearly, it's not enough," said shareholder Hannu Virtanen to Elop.
"Are you aware that results are what matter? The road to hell is paved
with good intentions. Please switch to another road."

End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize
the real struggle is for the future, not just their's but humankind's.

- Gavin Hood's Ender's Game - First Exhilarating Trailer - Summit

unveiled during a Google+ hangout today promoting the launch. Asa
Butterfield stars as Ender Wiggin, an intelligent young boy recruited
into the International Fleet's Battle School, where he trains in
military tactics to defeat the buggers if they ever invade again.

1st later this year.
- Duuude, Finally: Drones That Deliver Beer - This August,
drones will drop payloads all over South Africa's OppiKoppi music
festival, and there's a good chance no one will mind. Probably because
the payload is beer. Customers thirsty for beer will order beer with
their phones, then someone will attach a parachute to a beer, load that
beer into an octorotor, and the
octorotor will fly overhead, release the beer, and the beer parachutes
to the person who ordered it (hopefully). For test flights, the
drone is remotely piloted, but the goal is to make the process far more
autonomous, with drones flying themselves to coordinates on a GPS
delivery grid
