  • A bit more info on Windows Blue? - Even though Windows 8 has only been on the market for a short time we already know Microsoft is hard at work on the next version of the OS. • Outlook 2013 drops .XLS and .DOC from import, export features - On its Office blog, Microsoft announced several aging features to be whacked by the deprecation hammer in Outlook 2013. Amongst these imminent changes is the elimination of importing (and exporting) legacy Microsoft Office formats, namely 97-2003 .XLS and .DOC files. Ouch! Looks like some businesses with files of PST's going back 10 years will be unable to easily comply with any court-ordered discovery if they cannot easily access .doc files attached to early emails.
  • Google and Motorola building 'X Phone' and tablet - The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google is taking its smartphone fate into its own hands, working with Motorola to build its own device known internally as the 'X Phone.' Due sometime next year, the new device is said to not replace the work Google-owned Motorola is pursuing with its line of Droid devices, but to serve as another product altogether - and that after the X Phone is complete, a so-called 'X Tablet' will be coming up next.
  • Acer may release $99 Iconia tablet - Following recent rumors of an Asus-made $99 Google Nexus 7, Acer is said to be prepping its own 7-inch, $99 tablet offering. The Wall Street Journal claims this information comes a source with "direct knowledge" of the project, but let's keep this one's status set to "rumor" until we ascertain more concrete details.
  • Netflix Crippled On Christmas Eve By AWS Outages - Wouldn't surprise me if Amazon is intentionally sabotaging Netflix since they are now competitors, even though Netflix uses Amazon's web service. (thanks Marty)
  • Google shows off its Search features in two 30 seconds ads - check it out
  • GravityLight: lighting for developing countries - GravityLight harnesses the power of gravity to provide a realistic alternative to kerosene lamps. The $5 light requires no fuel or batteries, and it takes only 3 seconds to lift the weight which powers GravityLight, creating 30 minutes of light on its descent.
  • MIT discovers a new state of matter, a new kind of magnetism - Researchers at MIT have discovered a new state of matter with a new kind of magnetism. This new state, called a quantum spin liquid (QSL), could lead to significant advances in data storage. QSLs also exhibit a quantum phenomenon called long-range entanglement, which could lead to new types of communications systems, and more.
