- Toshiba Begins to Sample eMLC-Based ZD6300 7.68 TB SSDs to
Customers - Toshiba has quietly expanded its ZD6300 family of SSDs with a 7.68 TB model, its
most capacious storage device announced to date. The new drive was
designed for mixed workloads and uses Toshiba’s time-proven A19 eMLC
NAND flash memory. Due to enhanced endurance and a lot of NAND used for
overprovisioning, the SSD can be pre-ordered for approximately $12,000,
depending on the seller, though its official MSRP is still unknown.
- Western Digital to Use 3D ReRAM as Storage Class Memory for
Special-Purpose SSDs - To sum up, Western Digital has finished development of ReRAM,
which SanDisk has been discussing for several years now. The company
plans to release actual products based on ReRAM in the foreseeable
future (12 – 24 months from now, call it a guess) and to use the same
fab and equipment to build ReRAM and NAND ICs. Western Digital’s ReRAM
has a roadmap for the future. What remains to be seen is what is going
to happen to the joint development of SCM announced by SanDisk and HP
in October, 2015.
- North American Businesses Reluctant To Adopt Windows 10 - Based on an evaluation of more than 400,000
Windows-based computing devices between January and May this year,
across 169 organizations in the US and Canada using the TechCheck asset
management solution, the study reveals less than one percent were
running Windows 10. It finds the vast majority of North American
businesses adopted Windows 7 as the corporate platform-of-choice since
moving away from Windows XP, and have yet to move in significant
quantities to newer versions Windows 8 or 10. "It appears businesses
are hesitant to take advantage of the various Windows 10 upgrades and,
at least for now, are satisfied with Windows 7," says David Brisbois,
Softchoice's senior manager of assessment and technology deployment
services consulting.
- Monitors Are Vulnerable To Hijacking And Spying - Researchers
have found a
way to hack into monitors so they can see what is being displayed,
as well as manipulate pixels so they can display different images. One
billion monitors are reportedly susceptible, as most use the same
processor that is vulnerable to this exploit.
- Google Maps Gains New Offline/Roaming Powers - Google
today launched
two new features for Google Maps for Android: a Wi-Fi Only mode,
and the option to store offline map data on removable memory cards.
Together, the two features are especially useful for those traveling
overseas, where data roaming is expensive. The Wi-Fi Only mode allows
users to stay connected to data networks for functions like email,
while avoiding data charges for mapping, relying instead only on
offline map data previously downloaded, and on Wi-Fi service when
available. Users can also download extensive map data before their trip
- or over Wi-Fi while traveling - and store it on a removable memory
card for navigation without using mobile data while roaming. The
features are also useful for non-traveling users with limited data
plans or spotty service locally. The company did not announce whether
the Wi-Fi Only mode will come to Google Maps for iOS
- PlayStation Now Streaming Service To Be Announced For PC Later
This Month? - Interested in streaming Uncharted
and other PlayStation exclusives to your PC? You may be able to do this
soon if this rumor turns out to be correct, which claims PS Now for the PC will be announced on the 23rd.
More interesting to me is the suggestion for using a DualShock
controller, which may allude to official support coming.
- Alter - a robot that seems to be alive - Researchers from
Osaka University and the University of Tokyo are

Emerging Science and Innovation (the Miraikan) in Tokyo until Aug. 6.
- NASA's new High Dynamic Camera Records Rocket Test - This is
footage of Orbital ATK's QM-2 solid rocket booster test taken by
NASA's High Dynamic Range Stereo X (HiDyRS-X) camera. HiDyRS-X records
high speed, high dynamic range footage in multiple exposures
simultaneously for use in analyzing rocket engine tests. Traditional
high speed video cameras are limited to shooting in one exposure at a
time, but HiDyRS-X can record multiple high speed video exposures at
once, combining them into a high dynamic range video that adequately
exposes all areas of the video image for comprehensive analysis.
