- Intel launches two Compute Sticks packing Core M and 3xUSB 3.0
ports - First, there's a Compute Stick packing a 6th gen Core M
Skylake processor. The
Core m3 version ships with Windows 10, 64GB of eMMC storage, 4GB of
memory, HDMI out, three USB 3.0 ports, dual band AC 7265 wireless and
Bluetooth 4.2. Pricing is $399; there's a Core m5 version that runs
$499 but ships with no operating system. The
second model costs $159 and runs an Atom x5 quad-core processor,
has 32GB of storage with 2GB of memory, an HDMI port with two USB 2.0
ports, and comes with Windows 10 installed. Dual band wireless and
Bluetooth 4.0 are also included
- The ThinkPad X1 tablet is also a laptop, projector, & 3D
camera - The company is introducing the Lenovo
X1 Thinkpad tablet, which features the newest Intel Core m7
processor. The X1 tablet also features a detachable Surface-like
keyboard, LTE-Advanced connectivity, and, perhaps quite uniquely for a
tablet, a detachable rear panel 'for serviceability and upgrades'. The
ThinkPad X1 tablet will be available in February starting at $899, with
the productivity module adding another $149 to your bill or $279 for
the pico-projector.
- This forked version of Android plays nice with x86 hardware - Unveiled
at CES, Remix
OS is forked version of Android Lollipop designed specifically to
play nice with x86 hardware. Best yet, it's said to look and feel like
a true desktop OS. The Verge scoped it out during CES and noted the
presence of a start menu, a notification tray and even the ability to
right-click. And because it's Android at the core, Google's full mobile
app ecosystem is on tap. Apps, by the way, can be run in individual
windows or full screen and a version of Remix OS based on Android
Marshmallow is in the pipeline.
- 32-bit vs 64-bit browsers: which version has the edge? - The
majority of web browsers are offered as 32-bit and 64-bit version
nowadays, and it is up to the user to decide which version to run on
the computer. This
comparison guide analyzes the performance of select browsers to
find out which version of it performs better. You can use it to compare
the 32-bit and 64-bit version of a browser, or compare the performance
across browsers to find out which may be most suitable for you. The
test system is a decent Intel Core i5-2500, 8GB RAM, 256 GB Solid State
Drive system with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 and Windows 10.
- McAfee's Everykey Can Unlock Your Phone, Accounts, Doors - When
Everykey - which supports Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, and iOS
(requires jailbreaking) - comes under the specified proximity of a
device - up
to 3 metres - it unlocks the device - be it your phone, your
account, your computer. What's more, when you walk away from your
device, it automatically unlocks them too.
- Cybersecurity journalist's PayPal account hacked - It
seems that no matter how complex you make your password, or even if you
use a password manager, your online accounts are at risk of being
compromised if the company in question's customer service is at
fault
- Microsoft Prepping Own SIM for Windows 10 Devices - Microsoft
has published a
new app for Windows 10 devices meant to help people connect to and
pay for data networks using their Microsoft account. According to the
app's description, Windows 10 device owners can view locally available
plans and sign up for contract-free service directly from their device.
Microsoft says the app is "designed to work solely with specific
Windows 10 devices and requires a Microsoft SIM card." The concept
mimics one used by Apple, which created its own SIM card for iPads. The
Apple SIM card lets iPad owners sign up for cellular service from a
handful of different providers without requiring them to buy a
carrier-specific SIM card. Microsoft didn't say when the Microsoft SIM
card will be available, nor which devices will be able to use it.
- U.S. Cellular Offering 6GB for $40 Per Month - U.S.
Cellular customers can now access up to 6 GB of mobile data per
month for $40. In addition to the new rate plan, U.S. Cellular is
offering potential customers up to $300 in rewards. New customers can
receive a $150 gift card at the point of sale when signing up for
service. Additionally, new customers who port their number and trade in
their old phone can receive an additional $150 promo, which will arrive
by mail. The company has halved the cost of monthly device connection
charges, as well. For example, tablets can be added to a Shared Connect
plan for $5 per month, rather than $10. Last, U.S. Cellular will give
customers a $50 reward if they refer someone to U.S. Cellular and that
person becomes a customer
- Motorola Brand To Be Phased Out - Lenovo plans to phase
out the Motorola brand from its phone lineup. Lenovo will now put its
own name on all of its phones and related products. The company will
still use "Moto" as a line brand, so phones like the Moto X will now be
called the "Lenovo Moto X", making "Moto" a brand for high-end devices,
while Lenovo's existing "Vibe" will designate lower-end Lenovo phones.
The company will also keep using the iconic circular "M" logo on Moto
phones. Lenovo bought Motorola Mobility from Google two years ago.
Motorola Solutions continues to exist as a separate company making
radio equipment for the public safety industry and related products and
services.
- Sprint Extends 50% Rate Promo Through February 11 - Sprint
will continue to offer AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless
customers a 50% reduction in service plan costs if they switch to
Sprint. The promotion, first introduced in November, was set to expire
January 8 and now runs through February 11. Sprint is also offering up
to $650 per line to reimburse ETFs and other fees for those who port
their number to Sprint. Sprint said the promotion has been well
received by consumers, which is why it extended the program.

- LeTV Max Pro Calls Dibs On Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 Chip - LeTV
today announced the Max Pro, the first smartphone to use the Qualcomm
Snapdragon 820 processor. In addition to Qualcomm's flagship chip, the
Max Pro takes advantage of 802.11ad 60 GHz WiFi from Qualcomm and
Qualcomm's ultrasonic fingerprint technology. The ultrasonic sensor,
placed on the rear, can read prints through sweat and lotion, which
should reduce the number of misreads. The Max Pro features an aluminum
and glass design, with a 6.3-inch WQHD display. It includes a
21-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization and a 4-megapixel
front camera. It has 4 GB of RAM, and 64 GB of storage. The device
