TechNews - 2TB Hard Drives Crack the $100 Barrier - tech
(hx) 12:07 AM CEST - Jun,13 2010 - Post a comment / read (5)
  • Intel Core i7 990X in the Works - Intel is evidently planning to updates its fastest CPU, the Core i7 980X, in the fourth quarter of this year. The new flagship will be called the Core i7 990X and should replace the 980X at the $999 price point.
  • Intel Sandy Bridge CPU Tested - Coolaler has posted some pictures and benchmarks of what appears to be a 2.5GHz Sandy Bridge engineering sample. You are going to need a translator if you want to do more than look at the pictures and benchmarks.
  • 2TB Hard Drives Crack the $100 Barrier - 2TB drives are down as low as $100 street, a year and a half after first coming to market, at $250 and up. That's $100 on promotional sales, for moderate-performance drives. Over the weekend, NewEgg.com offered the Seagate LP ST32000542AS, a 2TB 5900-rpm internal SATA drive, for $99.99 to its mailing list customers
  • 12-way mouse round-up, every budget covered - TechSpot has a whopping 12 mice in a single round-up. Logitech, Razer and Microsoft are well represented again in this piece, but they also showcase some new names that you may not be as familiar with.
  • Archos 13 ultra-portable with dual-core Atom now available - Archos is now readily welcoming orders via its online French store for its new Archos 13. Priced at €399.98 (~$480), the ultra-thin treads dangerously close to being cast aside as 'yet another Atom-based netbook,' but it doesn't come without a few perks. For starters, the 13.3-inch (1366x768) display is a bit larger than you'd expect from a netbook, and the system packs a dual-core Atom D510 processor, which is typically reserved for compact desktops. Other specs include 1GB of system memory, a 160GB hard drive, a 1.3-megapixel camera, 10/100 Ethernet, an integrated modem, wireless b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, VGA output (no HDMI), three USB 2.0 ports, an MMC/SD/SDHC card reader, and audio jacks. When (or if) the updated Archos 13 will ship in the US isn't clear.
  • Google researcher gives Microsoft 5 days to fix XP zero-day bug - A Google engineer this week published attack code that exploits a zero-day vulnerability in Windows XP, giving hackers a new way to hijack and infect systems with malware. But other security experts objected to the way the engineer disclosed the bug -- just five days after it was reported to Microsoft -- and said the move is more evidence of the ongoing, and increasingly public, war between the two giants.
  • Public DNS providers: Do they actually improve your experience? - Yeah, Google's DNS is probably my favorite.
  • Adobe releases final Flash 10.1 - After months in the release candidate stage, Adobe has finally pushed Flash Player 10.1 out the door. Those of you who follow our site are probably familiar with the biggest addition to the new version -- hardware acceleration -- but there's plenty more under the hood than the ability to harness your GPU for extra muscle. Flash Player 10.1 also includes accelerometer and multi-touch support, better streaming performance, content protection, and peer-to-peer broadcasting abilities
  • Realtek High Definition Audio Drivers 2.49 - Realtek has released new Realtek High Definition Audio drivers - Windows Vista/7 / XP
  • Sharp's 60inch LCD Has World's Thinnest Frame - Sharp new PN-V601, is the company latest 60inch (1366 x 768) LCD information panel with a new ultra slim bezel giving you just 6.5mm of space once mounted in a multi-screen display solution. Thanks to a unique bezel set-up, with a width of only 2.4mm on the right side and bottom as well as a width of 4.1mm on the left side and top of the LCD, Sharp is capable to offer on whatever configuration you may choose, en even space of just 6.5mm between each display.
  • Prototype Windows Phone 7 boots up really fast - The short video above features a prototype LG Windows Phone 7 device with a recent but still not final build of the OS doing a cold boot after removing and replacing the battery. Consistent across several tests, the device booted in an impressive 30 seconds. What's remarkable is that as soon as the lock screen displays, it's fully initialized and ready to be used.
  • iPhone 4 announced, launching June 24 for $199 - Apple CEO Steve Jobs just officially debuted the iPhone 4 at WWDC 2010 in San Francisco. While anyone with internet access has probably already seen the thing, we now know some of the new specs -- plus a date and pricing. June 24 for the iPhone 4 in white or black, 16GB for $199 and 32GB for $299, with a contract, of course. AT&T is extending the special pricing to any subscriber whose contract is up in 2010. Pre-orders for the iPhone 4 will open June 15.
  • Steve Jobs to crowd: 'We're having a little problem here' - Apple's chief exec and irreplaceable master of ceremonies has few if any equals when it comes to wowing audiences during product demos, but even Steve Jobs's famous reality-distortion field couldn't protect him from an embarrassing Wi-Fi snafu during the big WWDC keynote Monday. About 20 or 30 minutes into the big iPhone reveal, the Wi-Fi network that Jobs was using to show off Web browsing on the iPhone 4's revamped screen conked out, leaving Apple's normally poised, ultra-confident CEO a bit red-faced as the audience stared at a giant blank Web page. Jobs even got heckled before finally asking reporters to turn off any Wi-Fi they had so he could demo the iPhone ;-)
  • Leaked iPhone 4 Ad - The iPhone 4 is here and there is a brand new ad out to promote it. Be warned, the ad could be considered NSFW for some people.
  • 114,000 iPad owners info exposed - On monday, over 114,000 emails of iPad 3G owners were accidentally exposed over AT&T's network, according to Gawker. The hacker was able to gather emails of every AT&T customer who purchased an iPad 3G before Monday June 7, 2010 and their ICCIDs.  The FBI already investigating it. Why is the FBI investigating? My guess is that at least one of the e-mail addresses on that list ended in @fbi.gov.
  • Project Natal Tech Demos Detailed by LA Times - In a preview of Project Natal over at the LA Times, four tech demos were shown. They are "River Rush", "Ricochet", "Living Statue", and "Obstacle Course".
  • How Albert Einstein's Brain Worked - For all visible purposes, Einstein's brain seems perfectly normal, if not a little damaged, with nothing that would immediately indicate any great genius. We may not know anything until there's another equivalent genius brain to study; perhaps Einstein can't be compared to average brains.
  • The Motorcycle of the Future Has Arrived! - This is the MotoCzysz E1PC. It is electric. It is almost certainly the most advanced motorcycle on the planet. And it is the future. This bike is bad-ass, no two ways about it. It has a custom-built 12.5-kilowatt-hour lithium polymer battery that can be swapped in seconds. The custom-built, oil-cooled motor generates 100 horsepower (continuous) and 250 pound-feet of torque. It all hangs from a custom frame. Of course, it's got the usual top-shelf hardware. Ohlins. Brembo. You know the drill!
  • Nuclear Physicist Describes Vast UFO Cover-Up - 'Some UFOs are intelligently controlled extraterrestrial spacecraft, and this is the biggest story of the millennium.' These words are not the rantings of a deranged individual looking for attention or a comfortable straitjacket. Stanton Friedman is a maverick of sorts. Employed for 14 years as a nuclear physicist for companies like General Electric, General Motors, Westinghouse and Aerojet General Nucleonics, he worked on highly classified programs involving nuclear aircraft, fission and fusion rockets.
  • Chinese Concept: The Train that Never Stops - Basically, the train is made up of the regular train compartment and also the 'boarding/unboarding' compartment. Passengers may board the 'boarding' compartment while waiting for the train to arrive at the station.

  • First Short TV Spot for Robert Rodriguez's Predators! - Fox has aired the first official TV spot for Robert Rodriguez and Nimrod Antal's Predators. 0th Century Fox is bringing Predators to theaters worldwide on July 7th this summer
  • Early Promo Trailer for Jerry O'Flaherty's Samurai - Twitch has debuted a promo trailer for a project called Samurai that will be the directorial debut of Jerry O'Flaherty, who has worked for years as the art director on Epic's Gears of War video game series. They're developing a samurai vs ninja action movie using hyper-stylized action straight from Zack Snyder's 300. But the kicker is that they're using the Unreal 3 video game engine to render the props and environments!
  • Takers Trailer - Screen Gems has debuted the second new trailer for the ensemble heist action movie Takers starring quite an eccentric cast: Idris Elba, Paul Walker, Hayden Christensen, Zoe Saldana, Matt Dillon, Jay Hernandez, T.I. and Chris Brown.
  • First 90 Seconds from First New Futurama Episode! - The one-hour season premiere of Futurama airs Thursday, June 24 at 10pm / 9c.
  • Watch Chuck Lorre's Admitted Failure: The Original Big Bang Theory Pilot - Here's your Big Bang Theory trivia of the day: Long before Kaley Cuoco joined the CBS sitcom as Leonard and Sheldon's ditzy neighbor Penny, Chuck Lorre shot a pilot with unknown Canadian actress/VJ Amanda Walsh as his female lead.
  • Is BP Headed for Bankruptcy? - How low will BP stock go? Today's guess: All the way to zero. Already, the oil spill in the gulf has caused BP shares to drop to $30 from $60. That's a loss in total market value of $90 billion.
  • Viacom PWNED on Piracy (video) - You have to watch almost half of this video before you actually get to the Viacom PWNED on piracy part but it is well worth it.

I would rather see the 2TB drives crack the 100 days lifespan.

LOL! Has someone had bad luck with hard drives?

It's a rather disturbing common problem, I'm not the only one, since the 1.5 TB introductions, D.O.A. stats have peeked toward 20%, dying disks within 4 months are around 40%, same things happens with 2TB's, it started with Seagate, but it has also become common with Western Digital and Samsung lately. Perhaps some cheap Chinese components....

I dont know where you get your bullshits stats from, but they are way off the mark. I've sold hundreds of them in the past year, and only had one fail.

I've got those stats from the BHRC, probably those were you BUY them first.
