- Field Report #1 - ArmA 2 and Operation Arrowhead -
Bohemia Interactive's ArmA 2 is billed as the 'ultimate military
simulator' and they aren't kidding. I've been playing
shooters for a very long time and recently the modern military shooter
is in demand. I had dabbled with Operation Flashpoint back in the day,
but my computer was never beefy enough to run it well. Now, equipped
with a decent machine and a new copy of ArmA 2: Combined Operations, I
venture into the brutal, unforgiving world of realistic military combat.
- Painkiller Retrospective - Now developing Bulletstorm with their
buddies at Epic, Polish studio People Can Fly created a
rough-edged marvel with Painkiller. At the time much of the instant
appeal came from the fact that the game appeared at the dawn of in-game
physics and ragdolls (nobody had ever nailed a gasmask-wearing WW1
soldier in the leg and seen him dangle from the ceiling of an
Underground station before) yet even six years on those simple
pleasures remain. The gut-pinning, momentum-harbouring stakegun, as
lovingly ripped off by BioShock 2's speargun, is still the most
satisfying FPS weapon of modern times.
- APB creator responds to lackluster reviews - Released
this last Tuesday, All Points Bulletin is a semi-open world MMO that
revolves around shooting, driving fast, and anything else that would
entail a large scale game of cops and robbers. Problem is, it
apparently isn't any good. Dave Jones, the
man behind the original Grand Theft Auto and now Creative Director of
Realtime Worlds, has defended his new project in an interview
with Eurogamer. He says that reviewers gave the game bad
scores because of misconceptions and huge expectations.

- Quantic Dream working on new tech, no project
called Horizon in development - David Cage isn't satisfied
with Heavy Rain. It's not just the fact that they had to drop their
episodic DLC plans, but also the technology that the game runs on.
That's not to say that he's not proud of the final product. He just
wants to take things to a whole new level.

- iBUYPOWER's MAGIC software turns any PC game into
a multi-touch title - The software, called MAGIC, allows
players to create profiles for each game and then play them with any
multi-touch supported monitor or laptop. The software can be downloaded
for free at the iBUYPOWER web site. It does require Windows 7 and of
course you have to have a multi-touch product for it to work (which,
not so oddly, iBUYPOWER sells).
