Sunday Reading - How Publishers Punish Game Sites - briefly
(hx) 11:29 AM CEST - Sep,07 2008 - Post a comment / read (5)
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky - Impressions at 3.360 x 2.100 with 32:1 AF - PCGH posted some impressions of playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky at 3.360 x 2.100 with 32:1 AF enabled. Word is: "Please pay attention to who noticeably the branches are buffed by the Oversampling. With FSAA the game sometimes almost reaches photorealism. But this is bought dearly: More than 2 fps (in words: two) have not been possible on the Geforce 8800 GTX. Without FSAA/AF the game is running with 20 to 30 fps at 1,680 x 1,050 pixels. This requires, regardless of the Day-One-Patch, some optimization"
  • Clear Sky - GSC Forum moderators censoring problems? - Gameguru reader informed me through email that "GSC Forum moderators altering people's posts and deleting negative comments regarding bugs with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky, not doing anything to those posting praise."
  • The Fist Star Wars: The Force Unleashed Reviews - According to Metacritic the four reviews so far have left an average of 68 percent. Here's wh''s scored it: OXM - 75. GamePro - 7, gamesTM - 7, EGM - 56. Game's out on September 19.
  • Bionic Commando: Rearmed Patch; Q&A - The Bionic Commando website offers the first patch for the PC edition of Bionic Commando Rearmed. The new version should address performance issues encountered when playing the game on single-core computers. In related news, Joystiq has a Q&A with  Simon Viklund, GRiN's creative director. One of the topics was the controversy over the game's price-point.
  • Counter-Strike 2D Beta 0.1.0.8 Free Full Game -  A new version of Counter-Strike 2D is now available, giving you the opportunity to play for free this 2D clone. The game features different missions (Hostage Rescue or Bomb Planting), fog of war, easy to use map editor, online and offline play, 3D sounds and many more
  • Pre-made level 80 characters enter Lich King beta - Blizzard's now allowing Wrath of the Lich King beta players in the US to add three pre-levelled 80 characters to their game. Blizzard has yet to make any official statements about these preleveled avatars, but their gear and naming scheme implies that the company is ramping up testing on PVP at the new level cap. Lake Wintergrasp - World of Warcraft's first dedicated PVP zone - has been singled out as the subject of criticism from scads of testers, so there's a good chance this is the first step toward fine-tuning that experience.
  • How Publishers Punish Game Sites - Sore Thumbs offers a description of the occasionally tense relations between game publishers and journalists.
  • MSUC: WAR And CTF Finalists Announced - Epic Games announces finalists for the Best Warfare and Capture the Flag level categories in the Make Something Unreal Contest
  • EA Considers Licensing Spore As a Platform For Developers - Electronic Arts knows that it has something much more than an interesting IP with Spore. They also have a new sort of gaming engine. Not something like Unreal, but something that allows you to create a different type of game. So it's no surprise that they're not going to let that go to waste.
  • Classic Shooters Heretic and Hexen Released Under GPL - Source code is available at Sourceforge. Both of these games have had the source available for a while, but under a restrictive license that hindered ports and modifications. Now, thanks to dedicated fans, that's no longer a problem
  • Spore, The Sims 3 & Sim City iPhone Announced - Electronic Arts has announced Spore Origins for the iPhone and iPod Touch, along with several other games including Sim City and The Sims 3.
  • Microsoft Concedes Console War, Declares 2nd Place - Microsoft has finally fessed up--Nintendo's Wii has won this generational battle in the console wars. In a reversal of its "we're winning if you don't count the Wii" policy, the company behind the Xbox 360 has acknowledged the success of Nintendo's sold-out, remote-waggling wonder box and instead declared victory over rival Sony and its PlayStation 3.
  • MS Announces XBL Film Club, Screen Movies Before Release? - MS today announced the XBox Live Film Club. This new service will deliver sneak preview screenings of upcoming new movies to a select group of Xbox gamers in an exclusive setting. This gives them the chance to see the movies before anyone else.
  • The Game beats Bow Wow at Madden for $100,000 - Rapper The Game has beaten rival Bow Wow at Madden, a match costing the loser $100,000
  • THE ZOMBIE CHRONICLES - A Free Serial Novel by James Melzer - Permuted Press proudly presents a brand new serial novel by James Melzer: The Zombie Chronicles. The Zombie Chronicles will be serialized free in both text and podcast (audio book) formats. (thanks Zombie)

I almost beat the game by now, but i must say the game is so buggy and raw(not finished/finalized) that it became a real pain in my but. My advise to everyone-- make as many savegames as possible. I had to restart many completed missions and levels because of the script not working the way it should. My guess is that the publishers had only one 10 year-old tester and one PC to test it. Graph looks good, but it seems like it needs patching. The whole game feels like a "beta", same as the original. But i like it anyway. The good thing about it--people already are making some cool mods( extra gore, uniforms, scripts, etc.)

GSC Forum moderators censoring problems?

Oh, come oooooon... So not true. There's so many posts about bugs, glitches, crashes, problems, so many cursing and threats that you can't even read them all, let alone manually pick them all and delete.

Moderators ONLY delete when those posts turn into pointless firespitting, cursing and insulting. I'll clarify that I'm talking about the english gsc forum (just to avoid confusion: like I'm talking about some other part of the forum, russian version, or anything else).

Ah, you should have also seen the russian gsc forum. Moders gave up, so it's like a portal into the world of hate. I bought my pack of bugs and crashes in the box with the game too =) , but those words on russian forum are way too much. You even wouldn't WANT to read THAT, trust me.

So don't believe this "news", it's nonsense. But the bugs aren't fiction, the're very much true... =) still I actually did enjoy the game, so... it's your call.
PS: I like stalker very much, but I'm not a fanboy, in case you wondered.

The Wii won the console war? Could've fooled me considering just about every wii game sucks...

Sabot(05:56 PM CEST - Sep,08 2008 )
The only way a console declares itself a winner is when every household owns one!
That's the true account of sales. Not some pie in the sky 'we've outsold the PS3 -despite it having a year delay- therefore we win second place'
Try freezing the XBox sales figures right now and then waiting a year and seeing what the PS3 sales are to the same date? Then you get a true account of sales.
The Wii is a family console therefore it satisfies any age group, same can be said for the DS.

Talking about reviewers being unfair and laughably high scores for big companies, it's everywhere, even this same site scores crap games from big companies with 90%+'s......

It's just the reality in a money driven world.
