Valve have just launched the Steam Wallet Beta. So instead of just using a credit or debit card, you can now deposit funds in your own online Steam Wallet. You can put $5, $10, $25, $50, and $100 amounts in the Steam Wallet which can then be used to purchase games from the service.
The Steam Wallet, Steamworks' newest feature, is now available for public testing. With Steam Wallet, you can add value to your Steam account using any of the payment methods supported by Steam. Funds in your Steam Wallet may then be used to buy any item available on the Steam store, or combined with other payment methods to make a purchase.

Allowing parents to load up their kids' accounts with specific amounts of money so that they don't have to use their parents' credit cards and so the parents know for sure that they won't go over their allotted amount.

PS3 has the same feature and in my opinion it's ok unless you want to continually make miniscule payments for games with your credit card. I for instance have a $20 balance on my PS3. All they are doing is copying someone else.. Who cares...

Its a good feature, i am sure it will not be of any use to adults, but its perfect for children, since it would allow their parents to limit their spending each month or something.

Ya no use to adults eh?.. where do you people come from?! :roll: Great use to me, less hassle at checkout. Like I'd dump money into an account for my kids to use, especially for games.. riiiiight... My kids buy games it goes through me period. Unlike a lot of lazy ass parents these days, I care and control what my kids play on the computer.

Wow sometimes the niavity of people -today- astonishes me.
Adult,kid whatever? It's a feature that should have been around ages ago (not that i have purchased anything on STEAM) The very idea of putting my debit/credit card details onto a site that is the other side of the world -in this day and age of cloning,skimming and generaly hacking- is a complete and utter no-no!
The method employed by Sony (and Nintendo with the Wii) for example whereby you pop into a local shop -we have many- and buy at the register (no open to fraud exploits) a scratch card in 20, 50 increments. You then just scratch off the foil reveal the number and enter (redeem) it into your PSNetwork account and it automaticaly tops it up.
Simply put, if -god forbid- your account was hacked they can't physicaly do anything with it, as there is no bank account link etc.

I don't know what fucking bank you deal with Stumpus, but mine would and has alerted me within 12 hours (sometimes 2 hours) of any possible hack job to my account. Banking and transactions online are very secure as well. Encryption methods are not broken. Shopping on Amazon, Newegg etc very secure. This is the fucking electronic age man.. get with the times.. If you like going to a store to buy a card to put money in your account good for you.. If you don't like the wallet idea.. good for you. I like the wallet idea and anyone who thinks it's just putting money in Sony's pocket is clueless and obviously misses the point of the whole thing. If anything it actually decreases the amount of times you use a credit card or whatever. Augghh its retarded on this site sometimes man.

OBVIOUSLY the bank informs you if the amount is HUGE but NOT if it's a normal series of payments deducted. Your sooo stupid at times :roll:
WTF are you smoking? Read up on PSNetwork card, it PUTS money into YOUR FUCKING PS3 wallet!! It's worldwide. Gee whiz talk about putting the mouth in gear before engaging the brain....
So let's enact Tom's bank; "Hello Tom we've just noticed some heavy payments being withdrawn from your account, can you clarify if it is you?"
Tom: "Sorry it isn't me, oh shit! "No worry Mr. Tom we'll just CLOSE down your account -since someone has gotten access to it -which method we don't know? So to be sure we'll send out new cards to you and your partner (assuming your married and have a joint bank account), this means you'll need to transfer all direct debits etc contact companies etc that are due payments from that account -since they WONT be able to as it's closed, we'll setup the new account if you just COME into your local branch and help transfer ALL outgoings from your old account to the new one...."
That's someone talking from EXPERIENCE.
It's fuck all to do with ANYTHING, your card can get cloned at petrol stations, hole in the wall ATMs and by dubious checkout operators -trouble is when you find out it's far,far to late and your bank WONT tell you where from as the trail is invisible from the actual offence site. Sure you get compensated -we have several times- but it's the FUCKING hassle. Understand?
Again online is only as secure as who get's your card details when you pay. You give the SAME details as you would personaly pay with except it goes under the PNP -payer not present.
In your fairy tell world everything goes your way, but as i've exhaustedly spelt out to you the REAL world is far different.
Just to reiterate; PSNetwork card in 20, 50 quid purchases, redeems itself into your WALLET when you enter the number, EXCEPT YOU BUY IT AT A SHOP. wtf is so hard to understand about that??
