Steam Audio Partial Occlusion Demo - tech
(hx) 06:30 AM EST - Feb,25 2017 - Post a comment / read (2)
Valve owned Impulsonic has announced that it is ready to release Steam Audio for VR and all games. Steam Audio is the next generation of Phonon spatial audio tools. "Steam Audio delivers a full-featured audio solution that integrates environment and listener simulation. HRTF significantly improves immersion in VR; physics-based sound propagation completes aural immersion by consistently recreating how sound interacts with the virtual environment." What this means to VR gamers is that sound can mapped to the environment much more naturally. You can hear much more realistic sound turning a corner to come down a hallway; more natural sounds when an object bounces off another object, etc.

This works because you can see what's happening.
Try it with closed eyes the first time, then, for the second run, watch the video, too. (Pointless if you watched the video already.)
The left/right is easy, but I am pretty sure you won't be able to distinguish the rest.

However, I am not sure why Steam is picking up on this.
It should be Creative Labs' domain to set Microsoft straight.
Maybe they should team up because Steam has the strength.

Likely because Creative is waiting for MS to output a patch to bring back Creative's business. Valve should leave R&D to those who know what they're doing, we saw where their Steam Box went, nothing more than a slightly glorified mini-pc or htpc.
