Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II confirmed for PC - briefly
(hx) 06:10 PM CEST - Jun,07 2010 - Post a comment / read (19)
LucasArts has confirmed that a PC port of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II is in the works. The PC version is being ported by Aspyr who did the same job on the first Star Wars: The Force Unleashed game. For the first game PC players had to wait over a year after the console games were shipped before our version was released. The game is due out on October 26.

Will this be fucktardly capped at 30fps as well? If so, they can shove it.

Sounds like you are the type of gamer that needs to be getting 60fps or higher to be happy and you need to know that if the game is designed right, 30fps is high enough, it certainly was for me, it was perfectly smooth for me on my PC.

I was likely getting such a good performance, i would have got 60fps if it wasn't capped at 30fps, if you can't accept losing 30fps that your eyes can't notice anyway, then don't buy it. it will be your loss.

Ah, so you found the camera panning smooth at 30fps? Let me guess. You must own a PS3 or XBOX360, right?

It really depends on a persons eyes bud. If it doesn't bother you it could bother other people who's eye's are more sensitive.

I have a Xbox 360 and a PC, though i play most of my games on the PC and if the game is limited to 30fps, it doesn't bother me, its like the first Force Unleashed, i got that on both the PC and the 360 and it ran perfectly on the PC, no slowdowns at all.

If you wasn't getting any smooth camera panning on the pc version, then you might not have had a highend PC, i have just been lucky with money, so i have a Core i7, 6GB ram, 5870 ATI card, maybe that helped.

Its like when i play all my games on the PC, i ALWAYS have VSYNC forced on, that limits the FPS to the Hertz of the monitor (TFT, which means 60hertz), i turn it off, i might get 120fps or something, but i get the annoying tears on the screen.

The only time i get non-smooth camera panning, its because either the game was poorly coded or my hardware is either minimum or mid-range and i am hammering it by maxing the settings.

My experience of Force Unleashed is that it ran perfectly smooth for me.

Tom(10:30 PM CEST - Jun,07 2010 )
Yeah it ran smoothly for me as well on a GTX 260 maxxed out. I have the game on PS3 and PC. I also find that more games I lock at 60 with vsync are nice and silky smooth. MW, BC2, FO3, Dragons Age etc. Literally everything now I lock with vsync. I can't stand tearing either and vsync is clearly the solution to that.

Renton(11:25 PM CEST - Jun,07 2010 )
It depends a lot of the game engine.

For example, games like Crysis or GTAIV runs smoothly in 20-30 fps, without camera lag, but Far Cry 2 under 40 fps is very awful to play. The panning feels very heavy and laggy.

BTW; Remember the excuse of the first FU? A 5k bucks PC? I can't believe the poor quality of the game when cames out on the PC... and the super-physics system was absolute BS, pure scripting and the broken things debris just vanishes in a sec.

I have a Core i7 860 with dual 5850s, a Q9550 with a 3870 and an E6600 which is for testing only and I use the other cards on this machine from time to time. Force Unleashed run exactly the same on all systems at 1920X1080! This shows the amount of processing power that goes to waste, with the lame decision to cap the game, or ANY game for that matter, at 30fps.

The game itself was not half bad, but that's beyond the point. It had the potential to provide a far better gaming experience and they forced it down the drain. What I don't understand, is why on earth didn't they allow a 60fps frame cap, on machines that would have it for breakfast. One answer comes to mind. Laziness!

There is a very nice test that anyone can do to see the difference of 30fps vs 60fps, to understand what I am saying. Run a 60fps capped game, or any game that you know for sure than runs at 60fps on your PC, and have fraps running as well. Choose a scene of your game with little to no action, so you can focus on the framerate. Make sure that you have set the video recording speed of fraps at 30 fps with framelock. Also set it at half size, so it will not strain your system too much, so you can be sure that you will get a solid 30fps.

Now while you are moving around at 60fps, press F9 and after the framerate stabilizes (it dips at first), have a good look of what a solid 30fps looks like, compared to previous 60fps. Make sure to keep an eye on the fraps now red colored frame rate counter and see if it shows 30fps. Do you now see the difference or do you not?

JamieKirby(04:19 AM CEST - Jun,08 2010 )
Dude, you are asking me to bench a game that is designed to be capped at 60fps and to force it 30fps? you really do not know what you are on about at all.

As someone else stated, its all based on the engine of the game, for me, Force Unleashed ran perfect, 30fps or 60fps, it doesn't matter to me, cause the game ran perfectly, when it runs perfectly, the numbers do not matter, but then again, i am not a picky player that moans if it doesn't get a perfect 60fps.

Its like playing WoW, currently using a weapon to kill low level mobs, a single hit kills them, but you only do 1200 damage, but then you get a more better weapon, that does 2400 damage per hit, double the weapon you had before, but the low level mob still dies in a single hit.

Force Unleashed was designed to run at 30fps, which is why it runs perfectly smooth at 30fps, games like WoW or Farcry 2, you need as high fps as possible, but not with Force Unleashed and likely Force Unleashed 2 as well, either way doesn't bother me, the game runs smooth regardless.

Yeah i know, they even said the PC was incapable of processing the physics required for the game, talk about bull crap. lol

Tom(06:49 PM CEST - Jun,08 2010 )
If the game is written right and you play it as it's meant to be played there should be no problem. As kirby says. I've had no problems with 30fps or 60fps games.

Dude, when we are talking about camera panning, 30fps stays 30fps, no matter if the game designed for it or not. Do the test I told you to and don't be so negative. I am trying to teach you something here.

If you run something like Mass Effect 2 or Wolfenstein at 60 fps and then at 30fps the way I told you to and then go right back to Force Unleashed, you will see that the movement at 30fps is EXACTLY the same for all games. Completely uncomparable with 60fps though. 60fps would have made Force Unleashed a much smoother experience. Please try to understand that. The game was not "designed" at 30fps, it was just capped, plain and simple.

believe what you want, Force Unleashed ran perfectly, so 30fps or 60fps doesn't bother me, its not the games' problem, its your problem.

In the end, buy the game or don't.

one other person has agreed with me about the 30-60fps making no difference, if the game is designed to run at that fps.

If the game is designed to run as fast as possible, then you will need it as high as possible, but with games like Force Unleashed, 30fps is perfect for that game as will the second one, just like Crysis, 25-30fps and the game ran perfect, though it did drop down to 10-15fps a few times (i had the 8800GTS at the time)

Either way, either buy it or don't, having problems with 30fps or 60fps when the game designed to run at 30fps will not help you at all if you could get it to 60fps because its running its best at 30fps.

If Force Unleashed had an option to turn off 30fps cap and knowing my machine, it would zoom right up to 60fps and i will not notice any performance difference at all, that is what i am trying to tell you.

Also, asking me to bench a game like Mass Effect 2 which is designed to run as fast as possible like all Unreal 3 engine based games, going from 30fps to 60fps will notice significant difference in performance, which would invalidate the benchmark.

Renton(01:57 AM CEST - Jun,09 2010 )
I think the game was capped at 30 because of the scripting physics. Maybe at higher fps rates it looks accelerated and even more fake.

psolord(06:23 PM CEST - Jun,09 2010 )
Oh for the love of God. Hit a brick wall here with that guy not noticing differences from 30 to 60fps. Crysis run fine at 30fps? LOL! Ok, bye bye.

psolord> Oh for the love of God. Hit a brick wall here with that guy not noticing differences from 30 to 60fps. Crysis run fine at 30fps? LOL! Ok, bye bye.

Crysis is designed to run at 30fps, that is what you are not getting, you think EVERY game needs to run as high FPS as possible to be counted as good, some games, you are right, but for Crysis, Mass Effect 1 & 2, Force Unleashed, maybe its followup and some others however are designed to run smoothly at 30fps, its how the engines are designed and coded.

I think you are not getting the idea that some engines work in different ways then other engines, its like the Unreal 3 Engine, games powered by that engine, run optimally at 30fps, while games like WoW run as fast as the machine is capable and you notice the difference between 30fps and 60fps.

That is what i am trying to get into your head mate, but you don't seem to get it or refuse to accept anything other then your opinion as being the only possibility.

All and I mean ALL first person shooters, third persons shooters, side scrolling games, racing games should be at 60fps. That's THE ONLY correct way to do it. Now, 30fps can be acceptable by some people. Not by me.

What YOU seem to not be getting, is that whenever the camera pans, if you are running 30fps, there will be jerkiness in motion. The reason you think you don't see it, is because you obviously use motion blur. Motion blur is a genius way to shove crappy framerate down to people's throats. This is what your beloved Microsoft and SONY have managed to FORCE you willingly accept.

Now in games that don't have motion blur, dude seriously if you tell me you think it is smooth, you are the one that has the problem, not me. Your brain can do much more than process a mere 33.33ms per frame man.

I've been playing games since long before the first 3D games came out and I have come to perfectly see if absolute smoothness is present or not. I will accept noone trying to convince me otherwise of what 60fps+ is worth for the gameplay experience, at least in any game that has some decent amount of motion in it.

JamieKirby(08:14 PM CEST - Jun,10 2010 )
once again, some games are designed to run great at 30fps, though most are designed to run as fast as possible.

I don't have a problem, you are the one ******** like a child about a game that runs great regardless if its fps is 30 or 60.

Force Unleashed was designed to run at 30fps, but hey if you NEED a game to run at 60+ to enjoy a game, its up to you, but i am not a picky gamer, i have played TONS of games in my life, some capped at 30fps and some run as fast as the hardware allows and both have run perfectly for me.

I have always had low-to-mid range machines, so i have learnt to live with slowdowns (if they ever occur) but since getting my Core i7 setup, no game at all has had an issue running smoothly.

If you don't like any game experience that is less then 60fps regardless if the game is designed for it, then thats your choice and if you want to buy the Force Unleashed 2 followup, once again, your choice, but just because a game is designed to run at 30fps doesn't mean its poorly written or whatever.

If you don't want the game because of such a minor detail, then don't buy it, its that simple.
