Splinter Cell:Conviction to Have New Ubisoft DRM - briefly
(hx) 02:23 AM CET - Feb,27 2010 - Post a comment / read (21)
A lot of gamers were annoyed when publisher Ubisoft announced that it planned to introduce a new anti-piracy scheme based around an online authentication every time the game is fired up and also on players being connected to the Internet and to the official servers for every second of every minute of playtime. Now representative from Ubisoft confirmed that the DRM will be implemented in Assassin's Creed 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction, as well as Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, The Settlers 7, Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic, Ghost Recon and other upcoming titles. No doubt, this is incredibly bad news for PC gamers, and in many people's minds, completely counter-intuitive in combating piracy, as ironically the only people who will avoid the DRM are pirates and hackers. Simply, it's a good way to punish people who actually want to buy their product. In my opinion, it's totally wrong and unacceptable. Sure net connections are up 99% of the time these days, but the last thing I want is an hour of progress erased because of shitty DRM that pirates will have a work around for within 2-3 days.
Ubisoft is clearly saying that without tough measures, piracy will actually destroy PC gaming, making it unattractive from a business point of view to create or port titles on the platform. The representative added that "It's a huge problem - you know it, I know it, other people know it. It really is a very important issue that all serious companies need to address."

The company is also confirming that if the connection to the Internet goes down, the effect depends on the title the player is engaged in. Those who have checkpoint-based save systems will lose the progress they made since the last one, while other games, like Settlers VII, will allow the player to continue exactly from the moment when loss of the Internet connection forced the game to shut down. It also acknowledges that the new DRM scheme will at one point be cracked, but it hopes that until then, players will go for the genuine product.

If muppets support these intrusive titles then they deserve what they get. Another marketing ploy aimed to monitor your online gaming hours, thats all we need more bandwidth hogging. Remember what the late great Bill Hicks said " Whats that sound, something is lapping against my ass .... oh my god he's f***ing us! By not participating in this jape (on us), these malefic programmers will fail along with their corporate minions. Else we await the anticorp programmers to deconstruct this abomination give them the two fingered salute. ubisoft - tub of si

They really think they are gonna take a while in crack this DRM? They are only motivating crackers and making legitimate players shit bricks.

Well... no more Ubi legal games for me... I'm going "bucanero" all the way.

(07:01 PM CET - Feb,27 2010 )
Note: Ubisoft has mentioned bandwidth they are gonna use for this DRM that's more than most dialup, to the tune that they are transferring most of a gigabyte a day, so they are gonna monitor constantly. Hope you don't have metered internet :!:

wojtek_pl(08:05 PM CET - Feb,27 2010 )
I think Ubisoft is doing backward. They will only encourage people to crack the game or find a crack to be able to play off-line.

And yes, again, paying customers will be punished. Sad...

No wonder the companies are not happy with PC gaming. The PC game costs in the shop half of the price of console game. So their earning is also smaller. But with the price of the console games we can see what a non-pirated environment is: very expensive product.

Koogle(09:21 PM CET - Feb,27 2010 )
Ubisoft aren't going backwards, they are going forwards .....into oblivion

tride(09:46 PM CET - Feb,27 2010 )
Well, i was waiting for AC2 ... until now.
Those 'gays' are very impudent!!! Fuck them!
I wont buy this game, nor any other that requires internet in order to play it at all...
They just dont get it, dont they ?!
They threat people as peasants expecting them to just buy whatever is there for sale...

No way Hose! F you all the way!

Ozieo(10:32 PM CET - Feb,27 2010 )
These ain't about playing games anymore, this is all about money, power, privacy abuse, and making buzz.

To hell with the stupid looking sealed boxes, I'll use my bandwidth for something else than checking if all my games are "legal" and my computer is legal, and my country is legal, and my toilet flush is legal, Let the beast go, RELOADED, come on with the shit !

Sabot(10:59 PM CET - Feb,27 2010 )
I remember years and years and years ago, saying i would never buy into consoles. Well i did.
One reason why i did, is because the PC is completely out of control in ALL depts inc games and their DR management. There is NO level playing field and never, ever will be.
I cannot be arsed with conflicts and abiding by everything legal from M$ through to publishers etc.
I'm playing AC2 and the DLC WITHOUT being connected to the net on console, i don't give a $hit about ant shit graphics on PC no more, i just want to PLAY GAMES!!!
We went through all this 'i wont buy into this DRM' with STEAM, and it turned out to be HUGE. I've never, ever had a net outage in about 12-13 years. Only when i had dial-up did i lose MP etc. So if i bought a UBI DRM game it would most likely NEVER bother me, but i doubt i would buy any of those titles anyway.
This UBI DRM will be accepted worldwide (on PC) because folks accept change out-with 'stubborn bone heads' like us. We are a tiny, tiny, tiny minority. Everyone else just moves on and accepts it. Me i always vote with my wallet. I can rent my games anyway -unlike PC, so if i realy like a console game i buy it and save hundreds to thousands of bucks a year doing it this way. Try-before-you-buy 8)

TENGILL(11:21 PM CET - Feb,27 2010 )
Well one way to fix the problem would be to pay for the game, install it and then aply the crack.
That way you wont have to worry about losing connection and your progress in game.
Its a new way to keep the pirates in buissnis.
Make a copy protetion that forces people that have a legit copy, to download a crack....

tride(02:02 AM CET - Feb,28 2010 )
Stumpus> ...One way or another they push everyone to consoles! They make PC games full of bugs, then patches and etc...

But console gaming is never gonna be that good as PC gaming!
Its a fact!!! You only have a dozen games for PS3, for example - and they dont come for PC... another strategy by the MS and Sony...

Well, play your games dude. But DRM didnt go anywheare for a reason, so and this UBiShit wont survive...
They will start loosing money and gonna bend or get kicked out of bizz sooner or later...

nb411(03:06 AM CET - Feb,28 2010 )
heretic> Note: Ubisoft has mentioned bandwidth they are gonna use for this DRM that's more than most dialup, to the tune that they are transferring most of a gigabyte a day, so they are gonna monitor constantly. Hope you don't have metered internet :!:

I wasn't sure what to think of this until you mentioned that. Wow. That would add up really quickly and possibly wipe you out well before the end of your ISP billing cycle.

I am very curious to see how this plays out for Ubisoft. I think they are playing a game to find out how much shit people are willing to put up with, and if they accept all this extra intrusion, then will simply push for more if they do.

If they are collecting all sorts of usage statistics from players, then this can be used to make games that sell more, by looking for what people really enjoy most. I think this is a double edged sword because it will lead to games being evermore indistinguishable from each other as the 'golden average' of game development is discovered. We have already seen this happening as the game industry matures and is a trend that will continue.

Finally, as mentioned, when you pay for something - anything - you are voting with your money. When you buy bread, you vote for that company that made it (and the others in the chain of production and distribution). If you don't like what ubisoft are doing then DON'T GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY. If you really want to stick it to them then don't pirate their stuff EITHER, because when you do that, you are just showing them that you want what they are making but you expect it to be yours for free. Which is illogical and stupid. I do think that if you really want the games you should buy them and then crack them to get rid of the DRM if you want to, that also sends the message to Ubisoft that the DRM is unacceptable.

Ozieo(03:55 AM CET - Feb,28 2010 )
nb411,

You, as non cracking-pro can never crack the game before the DRM/Securom/and thousands of other spyware/irritate-ware/malware is actually already on your system. You can only keep safe from this malware by installing a pirate version that doesn't install this bunch of crap in the first place.

tride(10:59 AM CET - Feb,28 2010 )
nb411: Sitting infront your PC and thinking that you bought the game, then cracked it, will make some point to UBISoft is kinda stupid...
They got your money.... what else do they care about ?
They monitor the illegal downloads, somehow, we read about it non stop... so they know when something is wrong with their stuff...
Also they get big feedback from users/customers... So, no worries mate. Ill grab AC2 on the torrents, for example and thats gonna be my protest to what they do.
Its effective :) They loose money and "clients" and they know why!

Ok, so do that then. Let's not get caught up in the details.

My main argument is that you should pay for it and then do whatever is needed to remove or circumvent the DRM if you find it unacceptable. Then let Ubisoft know that you did this, either directly by being vocal about it, or indirectly by letting them compare their sales stats to their torrent/crack stats.

Part of the reason Ubisoft has introduced these methods is out of concern for piracy. Prove to them you are not a pirate by paying for their product, that you want. Trying to 'punish' Ubisoft by pirating their software in response to their DRM only proves one thing. You ARE a pirate who takes things that aren't yours out of some bizarre belief that is your 'right' to own it.

If you don't like what they are doing and you don't want to be a hypocrite then just ignore them and don't play their games at all, or do what I have already talked about.

It is? Then why is the argument so long running?

Yeah they lose money that way, but they don't lose clients do they, because you are playing their games!

Besides imagine a DoS attack against the Ubisoft save servers. That will shut down their entire product line. And I suspect it will happen repeatedly. They are setting themselves up for a fail :D

Potential customer confirms: Not going to buy any Ubisoft PC games.

Ozieo(07:57 AM CET - Mar,01 2010 )
Well, I had 4 games in order. I was able to remove Assassins Creed 2 properly from my order before they send out.

I won't miss it anyway, trustable reviews say it's just as linear, and constantly doing the same stuff over and over again as the 1st one.

Well. There's an honest mistake right there that the companies do.

You see, I'm from Argentina. Here the pirate market is so huge, that the legal market is almost unexistant.

Steam represents a reaaaaally good buying platform because I can buy the games at the same USA price, but a retail copy, for PC, PS3 or 360 have a 50% plus price tag.

So obviously, beign the games so expensive there's no soul here that didn't try a pirate/torrent copy of the product before buy it for real (or not buying at all bececause it doesn't worth it).

So torrent copies are potencially Steam/Direct 2 Drive/EA Store/Retail potencial copies also. And this is worldwide.

Nope, you are wrong - playing there games doesnt make me a client...
A client is someone who is willing to pay you for your services... (dont get this wrong  ) So, they loose money and client with this kind of politics...
And i wont be screwed in any way... ill play what i want to play, just wont pay my "vote" to those who dont deserve it! ;)

Your actualy being the one acting linear.
The day i read a review and make my soul judgement by it, is the day i give up gaming! In all my years of gaming i've played games that reviewers have given bad scores on and slated them. Yet i've played them and thought WTF????? Brilliant game etc, etc. And on others thought the exact opposite!
Of course, you're grievance is actualy with UBI and not AC2.
Anyway,
AC2 is nothing like AC1, that's a fact. Some idiot review has it linear?? Flying about in Leonardo's machine is linear?? well.. whatever ...It's by and far the exact opposite. Linear is Wolfenstein, Call of Duty etc, etc. There are so many subquests and things to do that my copy of AC1 -i bought it on budget and started it, enjoyed it, then bought AC2 then BINNED AC1, to continue the FUN that is AC2 inc the DLC.
Of course that's your choice, but that's what makes humans different =choices 8)

It is pretty dumb to think putting you money where your mouth ain't! - Is going to achieve anything other than sending out the wrong signals to an industry that is in general really hell! bent on only looking for a certain type of signal and that is one whereby consumers go along this sugar coated bridge oblivious to the signs and warnings saying pitfalls ahead! Once lead on mass to other side though, that bridge back will be burned.

So go ahead screw us over, here take my money for this new shit! And please don't allow me to have any resale/return value on this junk, my consumer rights should be void, so that I can help make you more money you greedy fucking scumbags, who invariably prevent real innovation and creativity and force everyone to put up with your retarded fucking schemes by being the only pigs in the swill. A manipulated and controlled market is not a free market at all.

Another thing giving them money for this will only go towards funding even more development into drm and security on content to prevent any reverse enginereering on whatever retarded schemes they think of next, that will grind more money out of the stupid sheep. If you don't understand how fucking absolutely retarded this industry and others are being run and where this is going because of greed, patents, and other harmful things to society in general then you are a deadshit!
