If we had to pick whether Spellforce leans more towards the RPG or RTS gameplay, we would have to state the latter. The game does have the building of units and buildings and there are big battles in the maps with armies fighting one another. The RPG aspects of the game come in some of the missions which have RPG like quest elements and in developing your hero units to improve over time. Another aspect of Spellforce that has RPG elements is the persistent world of the game itself and the non-linear way the single player campaign is handled. You can go from island to island in the game and encounter missions or quests that you may not be ready for but you can go back and accomplish them later when you gain more power and experience.
