Sony has reportedly patented technology that will prevent the use of second hand games on consoles. According to NeoGAF member gofreak, the patent application was filed on 9 December 2012 by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan, and will work by linking individual game discs to a user's account without requiring a network connection meaning any future attempt to use this disc on another user's console won't work. Alternately, one method suggests a keymaster/gatekeeper type situation where a disc would include an encryption key that would only be unlocked by the console which initially decrypted it.

It's worth noting that Sony has not confirmed the existence of the device, and the patent doesn't state what machine it will be used in, with later paragraphs also mentioning accessories and peripherals.

Sony's PS3 and MS Xbox are selling strong, still! So no matter what they do people will buy it! If they start to fail with this new tech, theyll just get rid of it.

Actually Csimbi is correct. Sony have been haemorrhaging money for some time now. Sony is a POS company. I wouldn't buy a thing from them. Bunch of crooks. Their products suck ass too. My PS3 was the last thing I will ever buy from those bastards and when they raped me when my Plus membership expired and they took all the software I got which was free I said. F THEM! Before that they removed OtherOS feature which was 90% of the reason I bought the F'ing thing, I even wrote them a letter and told them in big words to go F OFF. Would have loved to see the person who opened that letter. I make it a point when I see someone looking at Sony I walk buy and say, Sony sucks under my breath.

I don't know why people are acting all 'politically correct', here. The PC is the ULTIMATE DRM king here and started the whole friggin' ball rolling! You used to be able, many years ago, to buy second hand PC games in shops like EB. Of course you can still buy second-hand DOS,old Win95/98 and some XP games on Ebay. But nothing worthy today.
Every fucking games shop; Game,Gamestation etc has second hand console games for sale and every fucking console owner HAS sold games and bought them on Ebay for years!!!
So what Sony and the Xbox will inevitably do, is nothing new in the gaming world.
But, guys. Don't go preaching that Sony,Apple etc are all of a sudden the WORST companies in the world....
Try selling YOUR second hand PC games that are DRM activated or digital downloads? Erm....didn't think so :roll:

M$,STEAM and all things PC have, and always will be, the ultimate tightest BASTARDS with regards DRM gaming.
Consoles, like PC, will become digital download meccas and less and less will be in shops. (surprised it took them sooo long)

But like everything in life, you DO HAVE A CHOICE.... support it or not?
I binned the PC for nearly 8 years; still play DRM free XP games on my old rig. But have recently built a new spec rig and bought into STEAM budget gaming (as in DON'T buy full shop/dev prices). Check the forums on a poss purchase and get a demo, it couldn't be easier -rather than go to a hundred other forums and get a lot of tripe. Patches are all automatic and i gave up all that PC shit years ago. Better the devil you know...STEAM et al are still shit, but i don't and haven't sold a PC game in decades, nor have i played a second-hand PC game in fucking eons!!!
So what are you trying to say that isn't the slightest bit new??

Also, Sony don't just make consoles -obviously... The PS3 outsells the XBox by a country mile in Europe and has just topped 30 million units sold.
How about Tv's,MP3 players,cameras,blu-ray players/sound systems and many,many more and the fact that they've had the worlds worst catastrophe in the Tsunami. Shows how resilient they are.
The PC has had the first drop in financial sales in 12 years, Win 8 is a flop, AMD is laying off thousands...and on and on it goes....

what about the law permitting the owner to make one copy for backup purposes? Surely you can make a copy before you insert your disc into your next sony console?
Also, this will piss people of. They will just opt for another console? It makes no sense to purchase a 60$ game which you cannot sell after you are done with it?!

As for steam, you can "gift" your games away right? So I make a deal with person to give me 20$ and I "gift" him a game that he/she wanted. Isn't that possible? (I don't know, I am asking. I have many steam accounts and I purchase games on different account almost every time, later I sell that account :P ). Aside from steam, I torrent drm crap such as ubisoft's limited activation titles etc. Fucks given: 0

What I can't get used I buy from the bargain bin. What I can't get in the bargain bin I get off Steam and Origin.

it's a matter of preference. Personally, I've owned sony-erricson phones and they were pretty good. Now, if we take xperia it's 'meh' compared to samsung, htc, moto and even LG.

This seems like a reasonable thing to do from their position. Most of their funds in the console market come from licenses and games so no surprise here.

I don't get why you hate on Sony for trying to protect their business. Yeah, it sucks for console players that they can't rent shit anymore, but think about this - when was the last time you rented a PC game? PC gamers have had their anal rape long time ago and Steam isn't helping either, although some worship Valve like a god...

People have less to spend every following year and companies are adapting to the shrinking market. Oh well...capitalism...

makes no sense. People have less to spend, people ARE the business to sony (income/profit) so sony decides to make people spend more?! Logic...none.

If they depend on games to cover console hardware expenses (which is lie made up by sony, there was nothing cheap about 600$ for PS3 when it came out) then they should concentrate to make either consoles cheaper (600$ is not cheap) or games cheaper and better. GT5 for 100$? Thats fucking greed, nothing more. Now they want to make games exclusive to one console so you cannot even take them to your friends house or to a party or whatever. Further more, they are going to hurt rental business so more people will have even less money. Not to mention that if they DO implement that drm thing they are going to be hurting their business. EU is going to outlaw their products since they will not be in accordance to EU laws.
And of course there is a matter of who will be stupid enough to purchase a console with such drm in the first place, especially after sony took a dump on their PS3 customers multiple times.

I wonder what Sony's plan is regarding this.
EU usually stands up for customers, unlike other parts of the world.
So, it will boil down to two possibilities:
- either Sony complies with EU regulations (which means Sony won't be able to screw customers that much in the EU at least), or
- Sony simply does not sell such products in EU (which does not make much sense if they want a bigger market).
Looking at how the value of Sony is shrinking, I guess they'll choose to comply with the EU regulations.
But, it's all speculation at this point. We will see.

Well, I just cannot see how this new drm scheme can help them make more money...If anything, it will reflect in opposite way. One thing must be considered - most sales that Sony makes are in Japan. Japan is it's biggest consumer. If Japanese go for it, sony will be fine and wont care too much about others. That being sad, I can see that others don't care much about sony either. Oh well, we will see. Sony had great ideas in the past too, like mini-disc :P
