Sony: Devs to help build the next PlayStation - console
(hx) 12:44 AM CEST - Jul,07 2010 - Post a comment / read (7)
Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that Sony is indeed already working on some new hardware. "Yes, we are undergoing many activities that we haven't yet been talking about in public," Yoshida told Develop.  Yoshida didn't specify if it's a new portable or a new home console. What Yoshida did explain however was that Sony's next line of PlayStations will be more developer-friendly, thanks to input from SCE president Kaz Hirai.
In an exclusive interview with Develop magazine, Sony Worldwide Studios (WWS) boss Shuhei Yoshida candidly explained how Sony has learnt from past mistakes and is now building tech that developers can get the most out of. "When Ken Kutaragi moved on and Kaz Harai became the president of SCE, the first thing Kaz said was, 'get World Wide Studios in on hardware development'," Yoshida said.

"So he wanted developers in meetings at the very beginning of concepting new hardware, and he demanded SCE people talk to us [developers]. And when asked whether this change in philosophy will be applied to future PlayStation hardware, Yoshida replied: "Yes, we are undergoing many activities that we haven't yet been talking about in public. Some future platform related activities."

Yoshida was appointed head of WWS at a time when Sony had endured a stuttering start to the PS3 era, as a number of third-party developers struggled to get enough out of the famously powerful console. In the full Develop interview - published later this week - Yoshida explains in frank detail how SCE underwent a rescue mission for its first-party studios, bringing together top engineers from around the world to build a universal game engine.

This studio-collaborative philosophy at Sony has remained in place ever since, and was a core pillar of the design ideology for Sony's new motion controller, PlayStation Move. "I'm spending more time on the hardware platform," Yoshida added, "connecting hardware guys to developers. That's my major role now, and Move is one of those new ways of developing platforms."

Yoshida seems to know his business well. Game engine and hardware are one and the same for him. I guess all Sony stuff is pwnage like Yoshida, that's why we have 640p games @ 30fps running on Ps3 in 50% or more cases. It's the game engine that matters, not that rusty geForce and Cell power inside. I am still amazed how that bucket of rust can manage to play BR streams without lag, well, not entirely, they did limit BR to certain bitrate to ensure PS3 plays it.

I would never consider the format on a game system. Bluray or dvd or hd dvd doesn't matter to me. You can buy standalone players or use a pc/htpc anyways for less money. Apparently Sony wants to reboot again asap since Wii and Xbox are more popular. Everyone I know in some way has either a wii or xbox and sometimes they buy an xbox and get a ps3 later on down the road on the cheap.

The reason why PS3 is the least popular machine is one and only. You cannot find pirated software on the PS3. That should teach us all a lesson.

Now from a developer's standpoint, that may not say much. For example there could be 30.000.000 XBOX users, but only 2.000.000 of them buy a game and there could be 10.000.000 PS3 users, but also 2.000.000 of them buy the game. So the revenue would be the same for both systems.

Now I do believe, that the larged the userbase, the more are the chances that people will say "what the hell I will buy this one because I fancy it". So pirace could be a good thing in large userbases, even for original games. Dunno.

They say PC is dying from piracy, but I see Steam blooming....!

Anyway, I hate the bastards at Sony and they only got two things I want, God of War and Gran Turismo, so I give them the big middle finger award for now. I will never forget the lies they were spreading with the Motorstorm and Killzone CGI trailers. I expect more of the same for the next gen.

Hardware wise, since they will be launch in at least two years time, I expect 22nm chips and about 6BIO transtistor GPU with a matching CPU. I don't think we will see anything in the likes of a new kind of Cell, since so far it proved not to offer much. Too much trouble for the developers. Granted, it could do wonders for GT V or something, but all in all, there is a very small percentage of games that can benefit from it. Heck most XBOX games look better as it is and that is due to the genious fucktardy idead to limit the gpu chip of the PS3 to 256MB, while the XBOX has the ability to address the whole 512MB if need be. Obviously you need RAM for the game code etc, but still in situations where the game engine will be happy with little RAM they can assign more memory for the GPU.

Talking about memory, I expect both future game consoles to have something in the 4GB area. GDDR5 seems to becoming the standards, but GDDR6 is also in development from what I hear, so we could see that instead.

There is one good thing in all that. In terms of screen resolution, 1080P is perfectly fine. Things are much more different now from what things were back in PS2 days with its 640X480 resolution. We have approached a milestone, were the human eyesight cannot really see any more detail from more resolution. It is a totally different thing comparing 720P to 1080P than comparing 1080P to something 50% larger.

So I expect them to be designed for 1080P in mind and I expect it to last much more than their crappy 720P now.

I expect them to have larger hard disks and also the option to use USB 3.0 HDDs on top of that. This is what the pirates will take advantage of and I seriously expect PS4 to be hacked in no time and everyone will be like, wtf the PS3 was not cracked, how could the PS4 be cracked so easily? I will let you answer why! ;)

@psolord

I think your idea at how HUGE piracy is, is very incredibly overrated.
30 mil xbox users and only 2 mil buy games? That's rather... well... to be frank... is lol.

Piracy is a very small community that spans over only hundred of thousands of online users. Not millions. Not gajillions. Not even 1 centurion space docket! Piracy is a small niche. A very small community. A tonne of people don't pirate games. A tonne of people aren't aware of piracy and think it all relates to child pornography and is always linked to terrorism.

Piracy isn't why Xbox is more popular than ps3.
The reason is games/content.
Ps3 has very few amazing titles that are worth the spectacular price point of the console. 360 has tonnes of games. Great games. Affordable games. And it's a lot older than ps3. That's why it's popular. its content.

Piracy adds nothing more than a slight margin of popularity for a console.
Also 360 is a propriety console. Ps3 ports are ported from the 360 dev. Pc ports are ported from the 360 dev.

Wii is a standalone console.
Ps3 is just a sexy toy that gives you no more than 6 months of spectacular gameplay a year. Where as 360 has a continuous catalog of even mediocre games that are fun.

And i stopped reading after your incredibly overrated portrayal of piracy. It's just lol. Pirates are the most arrogant twits in the world when they think they're the majority of users on the internet. What's lulz is that half the people you know in your pirate community also have various other handles in different communities. So, it's adorable when you think that piracy is HUGE.

In gaming/media piracy is a huge concern.
But great content sells regardless.

I think he's partially correct. Piracy might be a popular thing in countries in Asia or perhaps Greece. The United States is a different story. When I lived in Chicago before DvDs you used to be able to buy shirts name brands and even vhs tapes of popular movies. Tangible items like shirts and whatnot were usually boxes stolen off a truck imo. I don't really see this as a common problem in the USA outside of major metro areas like Chicago.

Xbox is popular because of the Live system and the games you can play imo. We can agree there.

On torrent trackers number of DL's of AAA titles is about the same for PC and XBOX360. I really don't see how piracy is the problem for PC titles and not for console titles is numbers are aprox. the same. Only thing I can see is that PC users might buy less titles compared to XBOX360 since you can usually demo something before you buy and then not waste money on stupid titles. For instance, if you try Bioshock 2 before buying it, you probably won't even play it 20 minutes, let alone buy that crap. (for more than 5$ :P )

@yessum

Dude you got me wrong but maybe I didn't express myself correctly. I didn't want to suggest that in every 30 mil XBOX users, only 2 mil buy their games. I just wanted to show that whatever the numbers of the userbases, if a game sells the same in both XBOX and PS3, then it's all the same to the developer.

Now I don't know if XBOX has more content than PS3. I'll take your word for it. I do not follow console developments very closely anyway. From where I'm stadying and from what I've seen is shops and friend's homes, they are a bunch of the same pile of bull crap.

I am not for piracy nor against it. I consider it a means to access a full version demo, where you can assess more correctly if you like a game or not. Especially since most games do not come in demo version prior to launch.

Also I will have to admit that I personally use piracy as a means to offer myself a line of defense against Steam's ripping off of us Europeans! I mean that I will buy the game once it is on offer so I don't have to be victimised when they charge 1€ for every 1$. Love them but Fuck them at the same time. They can do better and I offer my support on my own terms.

I do willingly buy some games even from preorder, if I am huge fan of what the content is. I willingly get ripped off at these times but let's not make fools out of ourselves all the time, shall we?
