Sony Can Update PS3 Firmware Without Permission - console
(hx) 01:19 AM CEST - Apr,23 2010 - Post a comment / read (5)
A lot of you may have upgraded to the latest firmware by now, and I bet a big slice of those who did didn't even bother with the mass of text that came with it. For your information, Sony's latest firmware update comes with a revised End User License Agreement which allows the company to change any part of the console's operating system without notification or permission. You might think you own the console you paid for, but Sony has a very different idea.
From time to time, SCE may provide updates, upgrades or services to your PS3â„¢ system to ensure it is functioning properly in accordance with SCE guidelines or provide you with new offerings.

Some services may be provided automatically without notice when you are online, and others may be available to you through SCE's online network or authorized channels. Without limitation, services may include the provision of the latest update or download of new release that may include security patches, new technology or revised settings and features which may prevent access to unauthorized or pirated content, or use of unauthorized hardware or software in connection with the PS3â„¢ system.

Additionally, you may not be able to view your own content if it includes or displays content that is protected by authentication technology. Some services may change your current settings, cause a loss of data or content, or cause some loss of functionality. It is recommended that you regularly back up any data on the hard disk that is of a type that can be backed up.

Well I only plan to keep my PS3 as a blu-ray player. I already inundated my basement with a Samsung 60" HD TV and a 7.1 THX TrueHD Pioneer receiver. I was going to get a Sony receiver but changed my mind. I was originally going to get the Sony XBR TV but after get F'd over on my console I changed my mind.

Sony is off my list for everything. I don't like how they do business.

ironicaly no one owns either their xbox or PS3 AND for that matter GAMES!!
Basicaly you own a license for everything, the original code/hardware is the devs or companies and you CAN'T attempt to dissasemble code nor hardware.
Don't know what the fuss is about?
I bought a car from a manufacturer that had the perfect balance from gear length to handling and brakes. That car did me well for nearly 11 years, so when i bought another (their warranty and body corrosion guarantee is superb!) the car had gained so many superb features but lost the ones that I liked. I couldn't exactly demand my car be made like my older car, so i accepted that this happens and they have the right to do that. It's not like there is a car or console made out there that is exactly like the one i used to have. we're all in the same boat.
But to jump to an XBox...boy is that one backwards step! Pay for everything MP, buy OFFICIAL HDD, no blu-ray = no future. (before you say it, 3D is everywhere, whether with Samsung or Sony. It's the future right now and that is what matters. 3D TVs are here and so is football, blu-ray 3D films and soon to be TV broadcasts) The XBox is nothing but a games console and is why it is sooo cheap, and why you pay for EVERYTHING to do with it. (the basic comes with NOTHING)
But hey, that's your choice.
You can stick Linux on anything -but most certainly NOT on your XBox, no matter what version you buy. At least the PS3 had it for several years....

No it's not that you could throw linux on anything. The PS3 was versatile it's small and way more portable than a PC. I could leave linux running, on a small footprint of a machine and then within a minute switch it to a full flegged gaming system. For someone like me who loves tinkering with pc's etc they threw away a lot of my efforts in a whim. Does a PC have a hdmi output? Yes if you buy a good video card, does a pc have a blu-ray drive no, that alone costs upwards of $150. I bought my PS3 because I could do more than just play games. While I still can, it still has limited me and robbed me of lots of work. Sony is garbage.

Provides high quality analog TV output (component/S-video/composite)

This card is literaly the price of TWO PS3 or XBox games if you shop about.
I've got it hooked up to an LG 23" 1080P for my legacy gaming and use it on my 46" Sony. It's a bloody good card, and probably supports more than you expected (as per the specs above) than you could think.
With a tiny bit of shopping about, you've put together a PC with likes of the above card and Blu-ray drive and got your linux up and running again.

I don't want a PC sitting beside my TV or a PC hooked up to my TV, it was more convenient with 1 HDMI cable period. Like I said, 1 small box. A PC is not a small box its another completely different item. It's not just a video card, it also needs a HD, ram, a motherboard, a cpu and a case and decent blurray drive. When you add that all up, it's much more than just a PS3 Stumpus. The PS3 offered BOTH conveniences of a console and a personal PC. I wasn't just using the Linux on my PS3 for streaming. I was using it to work with. I was using it to play games on the side on my big screen. I could remote down to my other Linux boxes and share doc's and applications. I was doing lots with the Linux on my PS3 until the bastards removed it. Sony will never set foot in my home again, in any shape or form.

I was looking at this actually Stumpus.. http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16883103215 but it's minus a blu-ray drive that would cost me upwards of a $100. The footprint is small for this and I could hide it in a cabinet but still, it doesn't compare to what I had going with my PS3.
