Sony Announces the NGP, Next Generation Portable - console

- Post a comment Sony has announced it's next generation
portable gaming system or 'NGP' formerly known as the PSP2.
The system, will have 'PlayStation 3' level graphics, a 5-inch touch
pannel on back of the system and a 5-inch 960×544 OLED touch screen on
front. The system will also have always-on 3G and Wi-Fi support and is
due out
this holiday season in Japan. No price was listed for the hardware, but
considering the level of technology embedded in the system (more than
most smart phones), one may expect it to be higher than lower. Content
will be delivered via network and on flash-based media cards that look
similar to the ones used on the Nintendo DS. The unit will also include
the same gyroscopic sensor as the PlayStation Move for movement-based
control. The new system will not support the UMD format from the first
PSP. Even though it does not support UMDs, games downloaded to the
first PSP will work with the new system. One of the key features touted
was the use of location-base services for games, with the NGP
automatically and passively interacting with nearby systems, even when
in a hold mode (similar to the 'tag' mode in the DS game Dragon Quest
IX and the passive mode in the announced 3DS). Additionally, the system
will automatically create a ranking of the most popular games being
played near you and then funnel the user toward those games in the
online PlayStation store. Games in development for the system are a
Call of Duty game, an Uncharted game, Hot Shots Golf, Gravity Daze,
Little Big Planet, Little Deviants, Wipeout, a Resistance game, a
Killzone game and a game called Reality Fighters.
Here's what else I know about the hardware:
* two analog sticks (yes, you read that correctly: sticks,
not nubs like on the PSP -- they rise above the surface of the device)
* 3G, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and GPS radios
* the same motion sensors (three-axis accelerometer,
three-axis gyroscope) as the PlayStation Move
* a multitouch touchpad on the rear of the unit that's the
same size as the front screen
* front- and rear-facing cameras
* a quad-core PowerVR SGX543MP4+ GPU
