Sinclair And Clones Computer Show - briefly
(hx) 10:01 PM CEST - Oct,24 2004 - Post a comment / read (2)
The Sinclair ZX Spectrum seems to be alive and well with 'Your Sinclair' magazine being relaunched at WH Smiths newsagents, and according to this, there is a Spectrum and clones computer show in Norwich, England. (thanks Slashdot.org)
The ORSAM 2004 show (which covers equally both the Sinclair ZX Spectrum including clones and the SAM Coupé, and now Sinclair QL (including Thors,Aurora, Q40 and Q60), Z88 and ZX80/81 etc) will be held on Saturday November 6th in Norwich, Norfolk in the United Kingdom. The show will run from 10am to 4pm for visitors, and admission is free. To help judge the numbers (for catering) we are offering a free prize draw ticket worth 50p to each person who books in advance, email me, there will be a single small prize. Norwich was described by a program on BBC1 as the best kept mediaeval city in England, with it's 2 Cathedrals, Castle, cobbled streets and many churches. For accommodation and more info about Norwich try Norwich Tourist Information. Thats QL Latitude=1.772 and QL Longitude=2.362 using the Horizon centre Cosham, Portsmouth as 0,0 as per QL Today vol 5 issue 3 (the calculation is an estimate based on information from streetmap.co.uk). This should hopefully be the biggest Speccy and SAM show in the UK so far this millennium, this show will also be repeated each year at the same time of year.
Ed.Note: I remember being 11 or 12 years old in the early 80's and seeing an ad for the ZX81 in the back of a Popular Science mag. I really wanted one of those things as I had not yet used a computer or owned one. However, the first experience I had actually programming a computing device was with a Casio FX-3600P programmable calculator (FYI, I still have this little baby on my table!) Not having the extra money for the TI-59, I still was fascinated by the 39 programmable steps ,two programms and few basic instructions. I made a lot of small programmes on my Casio FX-3600P, and also used it as calculator. I was about 14 :) But, my first real computer was a spectrum ZX81 on which I learnt to program in Basic. By 16 years old I had moved on to a Atari 800XL on which I learnt to Motorola 6502 Assembler, Pascal and Forth. A few years later, after I had been using an Atari 800, bought a PC XT 10MHz/640KB RAM with 20MB HDD. Even after using the Atari, I thought the PC was cool - so much disk space and memory!! Can you imagine? :) Now, over 15 years later, there is a whole generation or more that only knows Windows and have no idea what is underneath. How sad!

i wouldn't say its sad, just there's no reason for someone to know it if they don't have a job related to it or if their interests lie elsewhere.

I agree with his wording, it's not 'sad' rather he should have said FUN!

Even going back to DOS in the early 90's was fun -it taught you a lot about how computers worked what with HIGHMEM,EXPANDED MEM, Making boot discs, editing config files and so forth. Remember all devices weren't 'plug'n'play' so drivers had to be loaded for everything.

Like video recorders and everything electrical nowadays, you just switch the PC on and it automaticaly sets it's self up and loads drivers and windowXX.
Thanks to the industry and most of all people, it's turned future generations into lazy lethargic, obese blobs who don't have to move to turn a TV channel or set the video. This in turn let's these people eat more, drink more and die younger. Simply because mums & dads haven't passed down hobbies or interests and would rather 'technology' kept their kids quiet
