has conducted an interview with 3D Realm's Scott Miller in the second part
of its "Distribution Revolution" interview series:
Gamecloud - Many people are saying that PC gaming will become less of a
force in retail stores, especially when the next generation of console games
(PS3, Xbox 360) are released. Do you believe that Internet distribution will
become a bigger force in selling PC games in the next few years, even for high
profile titles.
Scott Miller - While PC gaming might be on a decline, I still see it as a
mighty platform that is here to stay. And it will also be the platform that
generally has the most cutting-edge games, technically-speaking. When a console
comes out, it typically has only a short window of superiority versus PCs. Also,
until the mouse finds its way to consoles, PC games will remain the superior
platform for several games types, especially the FPS genre and online games like
World of Warcraft. And while it's true you can play these kind of games on a
console, there's no question that you have better control with a mouse.
Online distribution should help boost PC game sales, but the reality is that
online distribution should work for console gaming just as well -- especially
the Xbox 360 because of its hard drive. Microsoft would be smart to take
advantage of direct selling their games through it's Live service. And I predict
they will, eventually, and probably within the 360's lifetime.
