The game obviously looks a whole lot better than before, but the guys at S2 are putting a lot of effort into making it play better as well. Though it seems as though the core ideas of RTS mixed with action are still the hallmark of the series, there area quite a few changes to the way things are going to be done including a revamped melee combat system. We haven't seen what exactly this means, but it sounds like it should include more than simply clicking wildly while in the vicinity of another player. Perhaps combos, blocks, special moves and the like will make melee based characters a little more powerful. If you'll remember Savage gave players five classes to choose from, with only one of those available at the beginning of any particular game. As money and experience were gained, players could access the rest, but it wasn't exactly a huge selection of units, especially for an RTS type of game. To that end, Savage 2 will use a 20 unit class based system that should create more variety and strategy to who chooses what units in battle. S2 is saying that certain types of units will be much more focused on run and gun type of gameplay while others will suit a more slower paced style of RPGish gameplay. Thankfully, the game will also include a comprehensive single player tutorial option so that players won't have to fumble around with the learning curve needed for a game such as this. It seems that it'll be needed even more this time around with more levels of command (we're guessing Battlefield 2 type squad commanders) to deal with. Hopefully the organization will really help with the overall strategy of the game.
