The guys over at Oblivion-lost.com have published a preview of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, based on seeing the GSC GameWorld first person action-RPG at the Russian Game Developers Conference last month. Here is a taster:

The first impression is (as was expected): beautiful. "Stalker" graphics are good enough for the AAA class, and we should not have to add anything else. But it is impossible to resist. Clear, high resolution textures, bump, excellent weapon models, bottomless sky. Sunsets and sunrises, demonstrated in accelerated mode, are almost indistinguishable from reality. Vegetation is on the appropriate level. Although, shrubs are made of sprites, even a dendrologist would not be able to tell the trees from real ones. Grass - the first sign of a solid engine - looks quite comparable to the natural analogues. The picture, "just like in the screenshots," looks smooth in motion, and absolutely no lag was detected (though, the hardware configuration was almost cutting edge - Intel 2.8 GHz, Radeon 9800).

"Stalker" physics engine showed its presence every now and then, causing a number of approving exclamations in the crowd behind our backs. Iron barrels, slowly replacing the usual boxes in shooters, rolled down a hill, while light objects and ragdoll bodies were amuzingly knocked around by gunshots. A good physics engine should be sublime, and add to the game, instead of being showy, and in case of "Stalker", takes the appropriate place. The lighting system is above all praise. The dance of a lightspot of the flashlight at nighttime looks natural, and sends the alloted portion of adrenaline into the bloodstream.

"almost cutting edge" this is because the reviewer does'nt have a nVidia card :P LOL either way this game does look sweet.

1-1, the game is an Acronym for a reason involving the story... read Roadside Picnic and you may begin to understand BTW, ta for posting this...good to see S.T.A.L.K.E.R reaching the mainstream (well, more mainstream than it was)

actually, that was rad9800pro on p4 3GHz system, which is quite decent. Anonimous translator, who took the text from original site without any permission, made a couple of mistakes. It wasn't "Cutting edge" in the original, though. anyways, who gives a shithe? it ran smooth.

don't matter about ati, the game was designed for nvidia like nearly EVERY other game. i swear there are a lot of stupid ass ati users on this site. maybe when that big logo comes on the screen saying nvidia they might clue in.

I played the leaked version and well.... not quite what I was expecting... it run constant 100 fps on my 9700pro. The engine is beautiful but - fortunately - not that demanding. nice job.
