PS3 Hacking Has Begun - console
(hx) 10:46 PM CET - Nov,25 2006 - Post a comment / read (5)
Believe it or not, people have already figured out ways to make backup copies of their PS3 games:
Console hacking enthusiasts have already taken the first steps towards making the PS3 backup friendly, installing LINUX and using it to dump a 7.08GB ISO file from Madden 07 onto an external hard drive. Pool Boy over at PS3News points out that this is exactly how the PSP backup scene got started, and that the PS3 file structure closely resembles the one used in PlayStation Portable games.

In the same forum post he mentions a new AdvanceMAME binary for the PS3 that allows the system to emulate arcade games through Linux, and links to a tutorial on how to install a 750GB hard drive into the console.

It's kinda funny. This is the most excitement I've seen anyone drum up for the PS3 since the system launch. There might not be much in the way of new games coming out for a few months, but the potential for the system as a set top Linux box is quite intriguing, and an angle I hadn't considered. Now we just have to see if Sony unleashes regular BIOS upgrades to quash the homebrew scene like they've done on the PSP.
Update: Gadgetell have posted an article with a 15 minute video of some bright spark getting Windows XP to run on his PS3 via Linux.

I love my PSP for it's "hacking" options. And since the PS3 not only boats a Linux OS - which means x86, consequently means running to some extent, windows games, it also boats a fine lineup of games I love so these "hacking" experiences coming now will mean tons for me. :D

To conclude: MOHAHAHA!

"Linux OS - which means x86"

it's not that easy... x86 is a microprocessor architecture..
and actually the only linux version i've seen running on the PS3 so far was a Fedora PPC
so no quite x86

(except if you were talking about emulation...)

Heh - I was talking about emulation, and I know I should have rephrased myself a bit better so there wouldn't be a misunderstanding.

Well, the reason I mentioned x86 at all was because of the aforementioned kernel supports the Cell processor architecture (as far as I know, it has since spring - I'm not knowledgeable if it also incorporates pre-compiled driver modules though.). Thus, if able to run the Cell, we are able to emulate the x86 platform, ergo my "muhaha" of joy. :P On the other hand I could be wrong all together and you have to use a modified PowerPC distro with some odd-ball modules to run like you mentioned. Oh well.

We can also set x86 aside completely and begin to emulate tons of fun platforms like Atari, C64, various forms of Nintendo platforms.

It's all in the hardware interface. ^^

Uh...Didn't Sony say you could install windows on it??
