If you are used to the 2D look of Pyro's Commandos games, you will be in for a big surprise when you check out Praetorians for the first time. The fully 3D graphics engine looks and runs great, even with the many, many units that show up on your monitor at time. Unit animations are smooth looking and have some nice touches, such as your horseman gently petting his horse while they are resting. The unit models have quite a bit of detail in their polygons as well. The map artwork, while not quite up to the detail that the current record holder Age of Mythology has, come pretty darn close with high grass and forests that enemy armies can use for cover. There is even some nice natural art effects such as birds which can be seen flying overhead in some of the maps and flame effects when you destroy structures and garrisons. The user interface takes a little getting used to since there is not any standard resources to keep track of but the game uses hot keys and buttons in the user interface to keep track of everything in the game.
