Gamespy
has conducted an interview with Microsoft's Peter Moore as he talks about
Microsoft's rededication to PC gaming. Here's a taster:
Having talked about Microsoft's early gains in the next-gen console space,
Moore finally turned his attention to creating an equally impressive story for
PC gaming. Microsoft treats Windows as a platform, just like the Xbox 360: in
either case, it's all about creating an environment where great content is
produced. That means generating excitement about the platform and giving
developers and partners enough support to make great things. This is what Moore
called a gaming "ecosystem," and Microsoft intends to focus on this in years to
come.
Moore asserts that the next Windows OS, "Vista," should be out by the end of the
year. Vista seems to be the cornerstone of Microsoft's plans to reinvent PC
gaming. A short pre-beta demo of the new OS showed off how games would be
accessable from a single organized directory, with detailed information about
every title, and parental controls to limit individual user access and time
played. Although it wasn't a part of the demo, one of the key issues in Windows
gaming that Microsoft hopes to address with Vista is the awkward installation
process. But that's just one area that Moore wants to "clean up."
Another thing Moore wants to standardize is the online experience of
playing PC games. Several companies offer online solutions (he listed
GameSpy, PlayOnline, and X-Fire as the major players) but Moore wants playing
online on the PC to be as simple as playing online on the Xbox. He said
Microsoft will work to ensure that the online experience is seamless and
efficent.
