Password-reset Exploit Leads To More Sony Downtime - console

If you haven't lost total confidence in Sony yet, this new password exploit might be the straw that breaks the camel's back ;-)

What happened? According to Eurogamer, Sony's PlayStation Network password system has a flaw that allows a hacker to change your password armed only with your PSN account email address and date of birth. The exploit was available via a special page that Sony had set up to help users change their passwords -- the page has now been taken down.

Sony's Patrick Seybold has issued an update, acknowledging the exploit as the reason for the site outages. He says the URL exploit has been fixed internally, and that passwords can still be updated via your PlayStation 3 while you wait for the sites to come back up.
We temporarily took down the PSN and Qriocity password reset page. Contrary to some reports, there was no hack involved. In the process of resetting of passwords there was a URL exploit that we have subsequently fixed.

Consumers who haven’t reset their passwords for PSN are still encouraged to do so directly on their PS3. Otherwise, they can continue to do so via the website as soon as we bring that site back up.
