OnLive Announces New PC Gaming Service - briefly

Are the days of PC hardware upgrades numbered? A new report today on Gamesutra details how technology company OnLive are ahead of the curve. Developed in secret for the past seven years, OnLive makes use of cloud computing, streaming video to your monitor at 720p resolution and 60 frames per second. Because the video is rendered in a "cloud" of servers, games such as Crysis are delivered at full graphics settings, the only bottleneck being the user's internet connection. 1.5 megabits per second will get you to standard definition, while a 5 megabit connection bumps the resolution to 720p.

Wow, a full 720p! They couldn't limit the capabilities of the PC a bit more, could they?  Also, relying on a fast Internet connection as the key factor in all this is ludicrous, too. What happens if or when Cable companies get their wish and start charging by amount of GB downloaded and/or if they start limiting daily bandwidth? Another problem is latency. The input from your device, to the cloud would be at least 30ms average. Then add on whatever processing time it takes on the server. Then add on the trip back to the box. Then add on that 1ms that the box takes. Interesting idea but the reality will make this just another 'flash-in-the-pan' concept.

Totally agree! 720P? Wtf? Are we watching a TSCC-CTU rip or what?

1080P+,60FPS+, High Polygon count or GTFO! These stupid consoles have destroyed world gaming!

And no, graphics isn't everything. I'm talking about the games that really need it! World of Goo kicked most stitty releases of 2008 and it's soooo simple, yet so much fun! Many Wii games are like that too!

But when you see crap like GTAIV on the PC, yes it could loose a lot of crapness if the technical department was solid!

And you say "Nah, that's just a fancy idea, this will never work" =)

Like these are some crazy dumb guys who spent 7 years developing this tech, who tested it, saw it fail and NOW they decided to show it to the public.

This actually works already. http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/965/965535p2.html

I won't recite the article, just read it and see for yourself.

There's also this one: http://gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=22875

Invitational beta this summer, release -- winter. Even if there will be setbacks, it's virtually already here. It won't hit millions of users instantly, it won't be bugless on launch day, but everybody will be using it eventually. The future is today =)
