Computer
Games Magazine has posted
a Q&A with
The Game Factory Interactive team as they answer questions about
Officers (previousky
known as Kombat), their upcoming non-linear 3D strategy game with role-playing
elements. Here's a slice:
Computer Games - There are a ton of WWII strategy games out there and
more are coming. Why will Officers stand out from the crowd?
Game Factory Interactive - From what we've seen so far, most WW2 strategy
games in the market lack the scale of battles, tactical opportunities and visual
realism of events. Officers offers three campaigns for USSR, Allied forces and
Germany, around 100 different types of vehicles, armored units, self-propelled
guns, artillery, and aircrafts, various opportunities to employ different
tactics to achieve victory on the battlefield, huge locations, destructible
environments, dynamic day and night cycles, seasonal effects, squad command
feature, advanced damage system for vehicles and equipment, combat formations
and many more.
Now, let me elaborate on some of the mentioned above. Till recently, we have
been shooting for three campaigns. Now, however, we are thinking about putting
off the Soviet part until the add-on. This way, we can work out the other two
campaigns into greater detail paying more attention to the mission and level
design, scripting, balancing and stuff for the best gaming experience. The
decision will be made soon. So keep an eye on the project updates.
When we say huge locations, we really mean it. The biggest location will be 5x5
km, with its actual size amounting to 8x8 km. We leave 3km buffer for each side
of a map to prevent, as we call it, the closed-room effect. In other words, the
player will not be able to visually see the actual edge of the location.
Speaking of the battle scale, the game features up to 1500 units on the
battlefield. Now compare this number with other 3D RTS games in the market :).
Squad command feature means the player will control whole subdivisions instead
of fussing with single units. When I mentioned the RPG elements, I was talking
about a number of upgradeable parameters the troops have. These are a medic
skill, skirmish skill, engineer skill, range of vision, concealment skill and
some others. The player is free to decide which parameters to improve for any
given squad.
