NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Review Round-Up - tech
(hx) 11:05 PM CEST - May,23 2013 - Post a comment / read (10)
NVIDIA today introduced the GeForce GTX 780 GPU, the latest evolution in elite-class GPUs, which delivers jaw-dropping performance and silky smooth visuals for the next generation of PC gaming titles -- including Call of Duty: Ghosts, Watch Dogs and Battlefield 4. Designed for gaming enthusiasts, the GeForce GTX 780 boasts a massively powerful Kepler GPU with 2,304 cores and 3GB of high-speed GDDR5 memory -- each 50 percent more than its predecessor. The GeForce GTX 780 supports NVIDIA's latest array of gaming technologies, including PhysX and NVIDIA TXAA, while the newest GeForce drivers reduce frame time variations to provide smoother frame delivery and a richer overall experience. And for those gamers who demand the very best, NVIDIA SLI technology -- the industry's preeminent multi-GPU solution -- scales to deliver even higher levels of performance.  The first reviews can be found on TechReport, Techgage, HotHardware, HardOCP, PC PerspectiveOCCverclockers Club, LanOC, Hardware Canucks ,techPowerUP! ,TechSpot , Hexus, Benchmark Reviews, Guru3D and Hardware.Info.
In terms of acoustics, the GeForce GTX 780 is simply awesome. It is easily among the quietest high-end graphics cards we have ever tested. Period. End of story. In real world conditions, the GeForce GTX 780 is somewhat quieter under load than a GTX 680 and is much quieter than a Radeon HD 7970.

Part of the reason for the 780's great acoustics is a new fan speed control alogorithm NVIDIA developed. For the GeForce GTX 780, NVIDIA developed a new fan controller that uses an adaptive temperature filter with an RPM and temperature targeted control algorithm to eliminate unnecessary fan fluctuations that contribute to fan noise. The end result is fewer fan speed fluctuations and a "smoother" acoustic profile.

The performance of the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 graphics card is somewhat mixed in my view. In some cases the GK110 GPU with 2,304 CUDA cores is able to stand out from the Radeon HD 7970 GHz that currently sits on the "not ridiculously priced" graphics card throne and in other cases, it doesn't. Even if we take away the 1920x1080 resolution from our analysis, since no one buying a $650 graphics card should be thinking about buying it if they are only using a single 1080p display, there are some cases where you have to question the performance gaps. At 2560x1600, the GTX 780 is 15% faster in Battlefield 3, 22% faster in Crysis 3, 2% faster in DiRT 3, 18% faster in Far Cry 3, 23% faster in Skyrim and about 1% faster in Sleeping Dogs. Even at 5760x1080, the performance advantage never gets past 21%. For a $220 up charge, that might not seem like huge performance increases.

Interestingly, there is more and more frame time variance creeping up into the results with the GTX 780 and the GTX Titan. This is due to the surge in CPU bottlenecks that occur when you add more and more GPU horsepower to the system. NVIDIA's frame metering technology can really only alleviate the issue when the GPU is the primary bottleneck, so when the other components cause the problem NVIDIA is mostly helpless. AMD's setup seems to have the other problem - when the GPU is the primary bottleneck CrossFire just can't get out of its own way.

In many ways, the GTX 780 is being positioned as a "flagship" device much like the GeForce GTX 690/GTX Titan and the Radeon HD 7990. NVIDIA seems to say "sure it is expensive, but aren't you worth it?" Appealing to enthusiasts' pride is definitely effective and will likely temp quite a few GeForce fans and people that want the best card they can get that is NOT $1000.

If you want talk in terms of percentages, the GTX 780 will run you 44% more than the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition and 47% more than the GTX 680. None of the single card performance results show us a difference in frame rate and gaming experience that quite match up to that so what are we left with? NVIDIA does have better acoustics, they do have better thermals and power consumption, the cards look better (but that is a personal choice) and I do believe that the software stack NVIDIA has is better. From drivers, to multi-GPU support to the new GeForce Experience software, NVIDIA is definitely continuing to invest in PC gaming even if its not on the bundle side.

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 isn't the fastest single GPU graphics card on the planet, the GTX Titan is. It isn't the best value in terms of frames per dollar either, that belongs to the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. Instead the GTX 780 sits firmly in between being the best value option and the "best" option so I find it hard to decide who should actually buy it. With a $650 price tag, it doesn't quite hit the "ludicrous" rate of the GTX Titan, GTX 690 and the HD 7990 but the price hike from the GTX 680 and the HD 7970 is not insignificant.

NVIDIA's new GeForce GTX 780 is a much harder sell than any previous GeForce launch even though it isn't a bad card in any way. Is it faster than the GTX 680? Yes. Is it faster than the HD 7970? Yup. Is it less expensive than the GTX Titan? Indeed. Those answers, alone, will sell lots of them; but, it can't win the performance per dollar argument that even enthusiasts pay attention to.

Likely the GTX 780 is in my next build as a) its much cheaper than the Titan and b) its only 10-15% slower than the Titan... seems like a good intern-purchase until the next big thing from Nvidia.

Which will probably be next month....throw away society indeed. It's barely got wet printed box packaging and its superseded. I play my PC approx at the weekend, that's not rocket science that I have 4weeks annual leave from work. So roughly I play on my PC 48 times in a year. It's hardly value turning over a near £400 graphics card which costs me just over £8 per weekend. That's just the graphics card. The gtx 780 is £600. Silly money when you actually work out the amount of games you *actualy* buy that utilise the card before its superseded and more so, finish.

Of course, but it depreciates faster than titanic's deck chairs! My card has dropped £125 in 6months. That's pathetic. Which proves that graphic cards are pretty much over inflated worthless pieces of junk, artificially driven by punters who believe the hype. If more people actually seen sense, instead of being blinded by bull.... Manufacturers would then be forced to sell 'realistically' at today's prices. Instead card manufacturers are in a 100% no loss situation - forever making 100+ percent profit and markup. Obviously if they can drop prices drastically in as little as 6 months.
I never even bought my card at full retail and it had dropped within the first 3 months by £20 or so.
More money than sense :?

Oh absolutely but I fear it will go even faster. Hard to incentivize my current purchases where it seems at every turn I am constantly getting reports and teasers of "whats next"? In IT, I am always being bombarded with "whats coming or planned" so I am already psychologically being told to just.. wait. When do I jump the wagon or make the plunge anymore when society is consistently inundated with plans and forecasts of whats coming next? FCUK!

EDIT: Changed my mind. Going to get this and sell my old card to my friend who will then sell his old friend to a mutual friend between us. In the end, we all get quite a boost for a much lower cost.

Going to skip this one. I have a GTX680 which is plenty powerful for all current and even upcoming games. Most notably how it can run Borderlands 2 with all visual settings AND Phys-X maxed out without the need for a second card while still maintaining a perfectly smooth framerate and even Crysis 3 maxed out with 3D Vision enabled while still going strong. There has yet to be a title that overloads this card as of yet and I'm sure by the time there is, yet another performance nVidia GPU will be released.

For those upgrading from a much older card though, it'll be absolutely fantastic for you.

I got a 560GTX and its more than enough for anything I throw at it. I don't believe in just throwing my money away so I can have the latest. PC gaming just doesn't need it. To me, even a 680 is overkill.

Thudo(06:24 AM CEST - May,26 2013 )
Ha... try saying that coming from a by-gone era 8800GTX (circa 2007)

Baconnaise(02:34 AM CEST - May,27 2013 )
Mine only lasted a couple years as with all my nvidia cards. It's some sort of Nvidia curse. The only one that's breaking the cycle is the 460 atm. 7950's were on sale this year though so we'll see how that goes. MetroLL ran like ass unless you shut off physx I think forget which setting.
