- Stealth Team of Scientists Revolutionizes Video Processing & Delivery
- After four years of stealth development by a handpicked team of scientists,
mathematicians and engineers, Pulsent Corporation today revealed a
radical new approach to video compression that finally breaks the technical and
practical barriers to delivering true broadcast quality video over broadband networks.
Pulsent's technology provides a 400 percent improvement in bandwidth and storage
efficiency over existing block-based video compression schemes like MPEG-2. The
breakthrough enables telephone companies and other service providers for the first time to
deliver full-screen, broadcast-quality video into the home at 1.1 Mbps - with the same
clarity and resolution that television viewers have come to expect.
- Drug barons launch shoot 'em up game - Right wing Colombian
paramilitaries have launched
a games website for followers which simulates the murder of its leftist rivals. The
site features the defence of fictional Colombian town Aguas Blancas, in a war that, in
reality, has claimed the lives of over 40,000 people in the past 10 years. Visitors to the
site play to defend the police station from being destroyed by rebel gunmen who pop up and
return fire. The game ends when the player has absorbed too many shots from the rebels.
- LoTR Takes 4 Oscars - The Lord of The Rings: The fellowship of
the ring won
four awards, including Cinematography, Makeup, Music (Score), and Visual Effects.
- World's Oldest Man Turns 113 - The world's oldest man on
Saturday celebrated his 113th birthday at his home island of Kyushu in southwestern Japan.
Yukichi Chuganji, a former silkworm breeder born in 1889, became the record holder after
the death of Antonio Todde of Sardinia on January 4, according to the Guinness World
Records.
- Clinton worm eats files - A destructive new worm continues to spread
in the guise of an e-mail message containing a caricature of former President Bill
Clinton.
- FrontPage Bug Opens Microsoft Sites To Attackers - On Sunday, a
Brazilian defacement group known as Silver Lords replaced the home page
of a Microsoft customer support site located at http://cust-supp-chat.one.microsoft.com
with one of their own. The defaced page, which was still viewable today, included a
message in Portuguese that begins "Bill Gates, my beloved and millionaire
friend," and ridicules Microsoft for failing to follow the advice in its security
bulletins.
- Hackers fail to ground US Air Force - Hackers were unsuccessful in their attack
on a US Air Force network last week, despite hammering the network in "one of the
most orchestrated" attacks seen by the Air Force in the past six months. Officials
said that over 125,000 unsuccessful attempts were made to access the network at the Wright
Patterson Air Force Base on Friday in "a concerted and directed attack".
- Registry hack turns XP Pro into server, vice versa - A routine currently
circulating on the web reawakens the old controversy over how different the
workstation and server versions actually are. NTSwitch, apparently produced by Hungarian
outfit 3am Labs, is claimed to allow various versions of Microsoft workstation operating
systems to be turned into server versions, and vice versa. 3am's free download of the
routine has been pulled "due to legal considerations," but at time of writing
was still being hosted by ADTW, which presumably either hasn't had a take-down notice yet,
or is ignoring one. 3am is still running a description of the operation of the routine here, where it is modestly
described as "a quick and dirty hack" which backs up the system hive of the
registry, edits and then restores it. The sole purpose for the creation of the software,
according to the readme, is to demonstrate that Windows workstation and server operating
systems share the same binaries, and that the only difference lies in the registry.
- Sapphire-based chip moves data with light, not wires - A
research team at Johns Hopkins University has developed a prototype chip with an optical
receiver that moves data on and off chip with light instead
of wires. The approach "promises to revolutionize how computer systems for homes
and businesses are put together," says professor Andreas Andreou.
- More on PlayStation 2 with Linux - This
kit will include a Linux distribution on DVD that runs on the PS2 hardware, additional
software, documentation, a 40GB hard drive, an Ethernet adapter, a USB mouse, a USB
keyboard, and a computer monitor cable. The package will cost $200. (The PlayStation 2 is
sold separately, though.).
- Progressive Playback on Xbox - Microsoft is hiding something deep inside the Xbox--and I'm not talking about copies of
Steve Ballmer's "monkey boy" dance. Lurking untapped within the Xbox are the
abilities of a progressive-scan DVD player. Why are such capabilities going unused? That's
a good question. In fact, there are a number of good questions about all of the new video
game consoles. At the top of this list of queries: Are they ready for today's
high-definition TV sets?
- Two Gigabyte DDR SDRAM Modules Soon? - Infineon Technologies today announced
the release of engineering samples of 1 Gigabyte (GB) unbuffered DDR SDRAM Dual Inline
Memory Modules (DIMMs) and the demonstration of fully functional 2 Gigabyte (GB)
registered DDR SDRAM DIMMs. The 1GB DIMMs are for high-end PC's and workstations, the 2GB
DIMMs are for main memory applications in the workstation and server market.
- TDV (True Depth Visualization) 3D Review - It is really cool to
be in a racing game or a flying game and see things in 3D. But, in games such as Quake 3,
the effect is OK at best. In Quake 3, the colorful backgrounds and very quickly changing
environments is not crisp in 3D. The best looking shoot-up game in 3D was Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
Due to the grayish, more realistic color tones that the game used, the effect was much
more comfortable on my eyes.
- Sony Ericsson T68i Shots - The
MMS version of the original Ericsson T68 has landed!! Not going to wait around to see
if a firmware upgrade will indeed transform my T68 into a T68i :)

their preview of Kingmax TinyBGA DDR400 PC3200 memory.
- Intel Pentium4 2.4 GHz Does Exist & Review - First impressions of our
sample Pentium 4 2.4GHz chip - due for launch any day now - are pretty good. The Northwood
part is built on a 130 nanometre (0.13µ) process which gives benefits in terms of power
requirements, heat output and the amount of real estate available on the die.
- Samsung DVD N2000 Review - The N2000 can obviously play
DVD discs, but it can also play a number of other discs, including VCDs, Audio CDs,
and HDCDs (High Definition Compact Discs). This is great for people who want to watch
Video CDs or listen to music on their home theatre systems.
- MSI GeForce 4 Ti4600 Review - Although NVIDIA launched the
GeForce4 Ti series over six weeks ago, cards based on the chipset are only now beginning
to trickle into the market. We've taken a look at MSI's latest and greatest GeForce4-based
card, and it looks like one hell of a piece of equipment-but then again, is a GF4 even
worth the money? Should you consider making a $400+ investment in
one of these cards? Is the GF4 a true core refresh, or simply an overpowered GF3? In
addition, there is another review at OC Workbench.
- Soltek 75DRV5 Review - The latest addition to Soltek's
SocketA motherboard line-up is the 75DRV5 based on the KT333 chipset. Can it live up
to the standards set by Soltek's previous products? Join TweakTown as they attempt to find
out!
- EPoX 8K3A+ KT333 Review - Tweakers Australia reviewed
the EPoX 8K3A+ KT333 Motherboard.
- MSI K7T266 Pro2 Review - In traditional MSI practice, the board
is bright red, and it's certainly one of the better-looking motherboards on the market. Also, the sheer number of
USB ports, both USB 2.0 and 1.1 is overwhelming, two USB 2.0, two USB 1.1 as expansions
(included) and two USB 1.1 onboard.
- MSI KT3 Ultra ARU Review - This
board has a great list of features like USB 2.0, support for PC2700 DDR RAM, and the
new ATA133 standard. MSI did a great job of putting together a board with a lot of new
features and it has good looks too! We couldn't wait to get this board up and running to
see if the new KT333 based system was going to impress us with its performance prowess.
- SiS645DX Chipset Review - The first thing I noticed when I took
the SiS645DX
reference board out was its huge size. The board is equipped with a good expansion
slot configuration of 6 PCI slots, 1 ACR and 1 AGP slot. There are also 3 DIMMs slots
available.

- Maximizing your FSB Guide - With CPU cooling you really get what
you pay for just like with RAM and most other PC parts. There's always a good reason if it's
CHEAP!
- P4 Northwood Voltage Mod - By doing this
mod, the board need not support any voltage tweaking and you will still be able to
carry on with the overclocking. Also we have addressed the issue of the cold booting
problem of the Gigabyte 8IRXP that occurs when there is manual tweaking to VCore voltage
from the BIOS and this method will solve the problem.
- Gainward defies NVIDIA with Quadro Change - Darkcrow
via pcpop found a unique switch on a
Gainward TI200 which switches the card's deviceid to report a Quadro. With no software
hacking or hardware modifying there is no way for the NVIDIA drivers to think otherwise.
- Mircosoft BootVis Tool update - Customer research shows a
frequently requested feature that users want from their PCs is fast system startup,
whether from cold boot or when resuming from standby or hibernation. The Windows
development team at Microsoft has taken bold steps in making fast startup PCs a reality
with the Microsoft Windows® XP operating system. Download tool.
- Zinc emulator released - Zinc
is an emulator
for Sony ZN-1 and ZN-2 and Namco System 11 arcade hardware. These systems are all
based around the familiar PlayStation game console with varying degrees of modifications.
It replaces the old Impact and S11emu emulators, which are now obsolete and no longer
supported. Runs in Win9x/Me/2k/Xp and Linux. You'll need this little secret baby (the file must be named firmware.zip to be understood by zinc) to
run all Capcom zn-1 and zn-2.
