Nextgen Consoles Will have 5x Performance/Watt - console
(hx) 09:01 PM CET - Nov,15 2015 - Post a comment / read (18)
Does this mean that the PS5 and Xbox Two will be able to hit that mythical 1080p, 60fps setting? ;-)
AMD believes it is a very strong contender to supply the next round of APUs – which considering the history, isn't a bad assumption at all. The company is confident that its GCN architecture will be able to achieve at least 5x the performance/watt of the current generation, resulting in much more powerful consoles, with approximately the same power draw. They have also mentioned other focuses this time around which I will be going over shortly. The company has plans to provide said chips by 2018 to console manufacturers – which can also be interpreted as the timeframe for the arrival of next generation consoles.

Currently, the PS4 is very much ahead of the game when it comes to console hardware – featuring the most powerful graphical side (at 1152 GCN based stream processors) currently present in any console. In a talk with Senior Vice President of Entertainment, Sony, an interviewer from 4Gamer discussed the possibility of an even high powered variant of the PS4 – A PS4.1 so to speak. This is something that is now a possibility thanks to the use of x86 architecture – unlike the PS3 where it would not have been possible to offer a version with upgraded hardware.

However, this new information (that AMD does not have plans to supply new APUs till 2018) makes it very unlikely that we will see a new PS4 with a more powerful APU, rather, a more energy efficient APU (and PS4 version) with the same approximate power could be on the table. Die shrinks and process maturity could result in a much more cooler and slimmer PS4, but will have approximately the same horsepower as the original. The same holds true for Xbox One as well – although the company has not officially discussed any such plans so far.

The second thing we learned was that AMD will be shifting a lot of its focus to VR capabilities as well. As many of you will know, the current generation consoles just don't have the necessary horsepower to drive powerful VR headsets – unless you drastically cut graphic quality. You would need roughly 3 times the power of the PS4 hardware (and even more for the Xbox One) to be able to drive an Oculus Rift standard VR Headset (2160×1200 @90fps) successfully – and since AMD's architecture should theoretically be capable of 5 times as much the next generation of consoles will definitely be VR based.

No. It means that you will pay twice as much for a hardware that calculates twice as much pixels that don't make any difference.

What it actually means is that they will use some iteration of HBM memory...

Csimbi(07:35 PM CET - Nov,16 2015 )
That's what I said ;-)

You can't charge for consoles more than they already are. I mean, you can't put a price tag of ~1200$ on next gen console, unless you want them to collect dust in storage.

Csimbi(10:45 AM CET - Nov,17 2015 )
They'll do anyway.
Remember how expensive the X1 was in the beginning?
There are always crazy people who cash the price tag out, no matter what it is.
Then, they drop the price to flush the stucked volumes.
Happens every time.

Well the h/w seriously needs to keep up to allow for more elaborate games and media content otherwise I cannot take it seriously as I still want h/w that does much more and currently PC/laptops do it and far more with broader time scales + makes me coin. :D

Actually I don't remember :P Mostly because not a lot of fucks are given for consoles by me. I think, and I am probably wrong, that both m$ and $ony price them @ ~600$ at launch, no?

For which you can get a better steambox.

Csimbi> For which you can get a better steambox.

well that's a different thing and hardly a replacement for someone who wanted PS4 or XB1... :) Though, steambox is also piece of crap anyway.

PS4 = terrorists best friend or so it's been said.

Yer not up on current news items of the world are ye? :?

gx-x(11:25 PM CET - Nov,17 2015 )
They could have used anything for communication...It's just the fact that those particular fuckers could afford PS4s and probably used them for gaming before all this. I doubt that they used PS4s in Beirut the day before, and apparently no one even gives a shit if they are not killing white western people.

Just what I hear in the radio nowadays - I work ;-)
Radio did not mention PS4s.

Umm you just need to search on google and you'll find plenty of articles...

https://www.google.ca/search?q=ps4+terrorist+paris&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&gws_rd=cr&ei=56JMVofABoGr-AGQgoOYAQ

however just in the last 24-48 hours they have said it was an inaccurate article.

I don't get my news from 1 site I get it from many. All reported the same similar story.

Obviously your radio station stinks and misses half the news/speculated stuff. Our radio stations were claiming they used PS4 when that news broke.

gx-x(05:49 PM CET - Nov,18 2015 )
Not even RT reported on that PS4 thing...That's a pretty "tabloid" "news" hence, serious sites choose to not report on that. I did read about it in my local tabloid site (I don't know if I am calling these correctly in English, in my country we call sites/papers that "report" pompous and unconfirmed news Tabloids, I think it's called yellow press or something like that in the west?)

I guess my radio does not report unconfirmed news ;-)

BTW, PS4 is Sony - which means Japan.
So not your regular faux encryption as on any US product.
Maybe that's the reason for the choice.

Yea, Sony got hacked again and again and again....Very good protection and encryption for sure.

IF this is even true, fuckheads could have created private game in somegame server and use it for chat. Hell, they could have used PC and any F2P game and whisper to each other via chat.

No particular platform would be necessary for any of this, you just need internet access.
