- Post a comment IGN has posted a preview
of Neverwinter, the upcoming Dungeons
& Dragons RPG by Cryptic Studios. The preview is based on
questions they sent to Cryptic COO Jack Emmert and Executive Producer
Aaron Brady. Here's a taster:
As far as character classes go, "At launch, we're focusing on
five classes: Wizard, Fighter, Rogue, Ranger, Cleric," said Emmert. "We
think these represent the core archetypes of the 4th edition rule set
(Controller, Defender, Striker, Ranger Striker, Support). After launch,
we'll be supplementing the game with more and more character classes,
so expect to see old favorites like Paladins, Barbarians, Monks and
Bards fairly quickly. There is a main storyline, though we've also
added many side quests to reward the explorers. A dedicated player can
follow the major tale, but for people who like to explore, there's many
other tales that players can stumble across."
Since we haven't yet had a chance to play the game, Emmert talked about
how the gameplay will actually work. "Right now, it's an action-RPG, so
there are no turns, no initiative rolls. We may add the pause feature
that we have in Star Trek Online so that players can take a breath
during combat, but that's not final. We're still playtesting." Brady
added, "The moment to moment gameplay is all about teamwork and
tactics. We're offering lots of ways for your powers to interact with
those of your allies, and over time you'll learn to work together to
use those powers to be a more effective team."
Speaking of teamwork, it sounds as though the game will be MMO-ish, if
that makes any sense. Here's what Emmert had to say about the online
functionality. "The game is online and several of the locations are
persistent, just like a MMORPG. So players will be running across other
players while investigating the mysteries of Neverwinter. We're not
aiming to populate these areas like a MMORPG, so a player won't
encounter hundreds of others, but he'll stumble across fellow
adventurers from time to time. There are a few things that require
cooperation, but a player can always hire NPC allies to help." Brady
also commented that, "Most of your adventures will take place with just
you and your party, but having an in-game social experience for finding
groups is important to us as well. Of course we'll also have challenges
occur in the zones that players can work as a whole to overcome, and
there will be significant accomplishments that will result in globally
visible world changes as well."
