eUniverseGames has posted a Q&A with Susan Weyer of Presto Studios to find out more on the upcoming Myst 3: Exile title. MYST III: EXILE introduces a new villain, a bitter man whose home world was destroyed by Sirrus and Achenar, the sons of Atrus and Catherine, whom players originally encountered in MYST. Played by Academy Award nominee Brad Dourif (One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest), the villain has been hiding on Atrus’ Ages, awaiting his chance to gain revenge.
eUniverseGames: Myst III features highly detailed rendered scenes. Is there an estimate for the number of rendered scenes in the whole game?
Susan Weyer: There have been a couple of best guesses. We’ve calculated nearly 150,000 rendered scenes for Myst III: Exile. We’ve also estimated, just for the graphics alone, 20 graphic artists and 90,000 man-hours. However, that total was calculated back in October 2000, and final touches are still being added until we go gold. While the code is open, there is always room for improvement, right?
eUniverseGames: In the past it was noted that Myst III: Exile would be released on CD-Rom and possibly DVD formats. Is this still planned by Presto, and will the release of both versions in North America be simultaneous?
Susan Weyer: There’s one thing many consumers don’t understand about game development: the decision as to which platforms a game will be ported to, as well as when those versions will be released, lie solely on the shoulders of the publisher. In this case, Ubi Soft. As the game developer, we have very little input in these decisions. We are simply hired by Ubi Soft to make a great game. That being said, Ubi Soft plans to ship the CD-ROM version of Myst III: Exile on May 7, 2001. They also plan to ship the CD-ROM Collector’s Edition on that date. I believe the DVD release has been delayed to focus on getting the cd-rom version [the most popular medium] to the market on time! [more]
