- Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag Preview - Where the
earlier games exaggerated real history, the marketing materials for
Black Flag attempt to legitimize legend. "Their true stories, rough and
unvarnished," says the voiceover in one of the trailers. A publicist
followed that up later, saying Ubisoft is giving pirates "the HBO
treatment." That's marketing speak for serious and mature drama
ensconced in violence and sex - the latter of which is hinted at in
the trailer when Edward gets out of bed with a naked white woman and
then a naked black woman appears from behind her.
- The Sims 3 University Life has Launched - The Sims 3 University Life introduces an all-new
college world for Sims to leave home and embark on a journey to higher
education. Not only will Sims attend classes and prepare for exams,
they will meet new friends, dabble in different social groups and make
memories to last a lifetime. The Sims 3 University Life gives players
the opportunity to build new skills, engage in more activities and
experiment with objects specific to their major to further their Sims'
lives.
- Dead Island Riptide Preorder Bonuses - Deep Silver
provides details on the two DLC packs they are offering as preorder bonuses
for Dead Island Riptide, the next installment in Techland's zombie
franchise. Preorders "in regions where it is available" will receive
the Survivor Pack, and North American preorders will receive the
Fashion Victim pack, each of which will also be sold separately upon
the game's release.
- Far Cry 3 Patch 1.05 Brings Base Resets - A
new patch is now available for Far Cry 3 to update Ubisoft's
shooter sequel to version 1.05 with new features promised last month
such as a new Master difficulty level and the ability to reset bases so
they can be re-taken.
- Age of Wushu coming to North America on April 10 - Martial
arts MMO Age of Wushu will launch in North America on April 10,
developer Snail Games announced. The U.S. launch follows the
game's initial release in China where it has seen over 10 million
registered users. The game has since been in beta while the studio
readied the title for Western audiences.
- BioWare San Francisco Shut Down and Employees Laid Off -
Known also as EA2D, BioWare San Francisco has reportedly been shut down and all 25-30 of its employees have been
laid off. The studio is perhaps best known for developing the
browser-based Mirror's Edge 2D and Dragon Age: Legends. Given the
BioWare branding back in August of 2011, the studio focused mainly on
social, mobile, and web based games. Sources say that Electronic Arts
found it was "too expensive" to continue mobile development in Redwood
Shore
- An Aliens: Colonial Marines Development Studio Hit with
Layoffs - TimeGate Studios, based out of Houston, Texas, has
been hit with layoffs. TimeGate was one of the
development studios that worked on Aliens: Colonial Marines. The
specifics on the layoffs have not yet been revealed. Some sources say
that upwards of 25 employees were laid off and are connected to a
specific publishing deal falling through for them.
- Crysis 3 on Wii U Was Canned - Crysis 3 was apparently
ready and waiting for a Wii U release. Crytek's Cevat Yerli revealed to VentureBeat that they had
a Wii U version of the game that was very close to being released but
poor "business support" between EA and Nintendo led to there not being
a release of the game.
- Valve Wants Your Help - Valve is rolling out a beta for the Steam
Community.
Included in this beta are three new features that users can test out
right now. First up is a new Community Home page. There is also
an addition of
artwork to the hubs, and changes to the main Steam navigation menu.
- Xbox 360 gets its first exclusive movie release, 'Pulp' - Pulp centers on a comic book writer who's
unwillingly forced to help the police take down a money-laundering drug
cartel. It was was well-received on the film festival circuit last
year, but apparently the cost of a traditional theatrical release was
too big a gamble for UK distributors to take on a movie with no
"bankable stars." You can get a feel for what Pulp offers by watching
an extremely foul-mouthed scene over on YouTube, and if you're
convinced, you can buy it in SD for 1120 Microsoft Points ($14.75), or
pick up the HD version for 1420 ($17.75) Microsoft Points.
