Morning Reading - briefly
(hx) 01:15 PM CEST - Jul,30 2005
- Post a comment / read (1) Windows Vista won't be released until the end of 2006, a Microsoft exec let
slip in a presentation on Microsoft's campus yesterday. This presumably would
mean that the OS will not be available until sometime around the U.S.
Thanksgiving holiday, which is the last Thursday in November, or Christmas,
which is Dec. 25, 2006. I wouldn't be surprised if the thing gets even further
pushed back to spring-2007. But who cares? I'm not in a hurry, XP treats me nicely!
Not much is going on today, short of more relaxing and enjoying the weekend.
What plans do you guys have for today?
- IE7 Beta Breaks Instant Messaging Apps - Trillian, a popular
multi-network IM client, Gaim and IM2
all spit out error messages when loaded alongside IE7, and the only fix is
to uninstall Microsoft's new browser.
- Phishers Steal Trust from eBay Sign In Pages - Fraudsters have
exploited a flaw in the eBay web site that allows them to orchestrate phishing
attacks using eBay's own Sign In page.
This particular attack starts off like many others, by sending thousands
of emails that instruct victims to update their eBay account details by
visiting a URL.
- Podcasts can infect your PC -
The weak link
in protecting users from podcasts that could carry viruses or spyware,
therefore, is generally not the podcatchers but the media players. The major
offerings - Windows Media Player, iTunes, Quicktime, RealNetworks, and WinAmp
- have all suffered from serious security holes. These weaknesses have allowed
multimedia files to quietly install malware, while the user sees or hears only
the expected video or audio clip.
- Google files for RSS ads patent -
Google has filed a patent application for serving targeted ads in RSS
feeds.
- Hollywood Lines Up Behind Blu-ray, HD DVD - Twentieth Century Fox
has thrown its weight fully behind Blu-ray Disc, announced that
it will release high-definition content on Blu-ray disc from its library
of film and television programming. Although the company did not specify which
titles it will launch with, Fox did state it will begin releasing content when
Blu-ray hardware becomes available.
- Tenth planet discovered in outer solar system - The astonishing
find is
the third new world revealed in two days - it is larger than Pluto and 97
times farther from the sun than the Earth.
- Yamaha adds rare animal menagerie to papercraft offerings - Yamaha
has increased its
downloadable papercraft offerings to include dozens of "rare animals of
the world" and "rare animals of Japan" as well as "the seasons" and the
traditional highly detailed paper motorcycle models.
- Japanese Female Android Exposed - Japanese scientists have unveiled
the most human-looking robot yet devised - a "female" called
Repliee Q1.
- 100 Things Every Guy Must Know - It's a man's, man's, man's, man's
world. Maxim has assembled
the ultimate road map to help you fit in.
- GasPriceWatch - if you own a car and live in the U.S. or Canada....
check it out!
- Bloodsuckers (TV) - Don't miss the premiere of
Bloodsuckers,
a high-tech tale of intergalactic vampire hunters described as "Buffy" meets
"Star Trek" in a Mad Max world. (Saturday July 30 / 9:00PM)
