MoH could have lost US Army support with Taliban - briefly

On Friday, Electronic Arts made the decision to rename the Taliban multiplayer faction in Medal of Honor to the more generic 'Opposing Force'. Now comes word that the decision to rename the faction in EA's upcoming multiplayer shooter might have been due to the possible loss of official US Army support for the game. According to Kotaku, Electronic Arts' military shooter set during the modern war in Afghanistan could have lost its official U.S. Army support over the inclusion of Taliban fighters as playable characters in the game's online mode.
The U.S. Army, which officially supported the development of Medal of Honor, didn't find out about the inclusion of playable Taliban fighters in the game until the title was nearly finished, said Kenneth Hawes, director of the U.S. Army's Public Affairs Office Western Region.

Despite working with the developers on capturing sound, going over the campaign's story and allowing photo shoots of vehicles like the Apache attack helicopter, the U.S. Army was never told about the game's multiplayer modes, Hawes said.

The director learned of the Taliban's inclusion after the issue made a splash around the world in media reports following the game's showing at the annual E3 video game convention in Los Angeles.

"We immediately contacted Electronic Arts and asked them to give us a demonstration of the game's capabilities," Hawes said.

Hawes and a team traveled to the studio on Aug. 27 to see the game's multiplayer modes first hand. What he saw did not please him.

"You have to understand I'm not a gamer," Hawes told Kotaku. "We provide support on major motion pictures, television and video games, but I didn't grow up with video games. So personally I was a little disappointed they included that scenario."

Hawes said he understands that when a military shooter has an online element there needs to be "theoretical good guys and theoretical bad guys." "But our concern is that this is an ongoing conflict, soldiers are engaged every day, our sons and daughters are dying at the hands of the Taliban," he said.

When asked what the reaction of the Department of Defense was when he passed on the word of the nature of the Taliban's inclusion in multiplayer he said he thinks they were "a little surprised."

so it is ok and normal to shoot them IRL, but it is not ok to "shoot" them in the video game. What? Would that piss them off or something?

They are talking about controlling a Taliban character fighting a coalition character or seeing a character labeled as such firing at you.

I can see where they are coming from. It's a hard thing being sensitive when you are making media that is covering a conflict that is currently happening versus one that has happened.

So why not meet in the middle. Make it an option to turn off so if one is fighting against, or for, the terrorist faction they see the opposing force tag and not Taliban. Which might also mean a texture change as well, I haven't looked into what they are supposed to look like.

Much like the option to turn off/on blood or language. Leave it to the player to decide what they are comfortable with viewing.

It's ok to kill people. Just be damned sure you do it in the name of the 'correct' god.

there's only 4 gods that we truly kill for... Oil, gold, diamonds and water.

I don't see what the big deal is? The only issue I can see realistically is they are giving too much credit to a small time organization. I'm of the opinion at this time that even the old school mafia rings were more powerful even. You could basically say the same about them that the only power they have is usually in their own neighborhoods.

Its all about politics. The US Army doesn't want any substantiation of the Taliban and fair enough if any advice/content was given without MoH presenting their intentions. However, people play military shooters for their own reasons and politics isn't one of them. I suspect the issue won't affect sales. Another game of the same genre was Novalogic's Delta Force Task Force Dagger.

I still don't get it. Shooting and killing Tabs IRL is fine, calling them in the news is fine, calling them in newspapers is fine, calling them in video game is "sensitive" and not fine. It's like Hitler saying "naming opposing faction as "yews" in that game is sensitive issue."
