GameSpot,
GameSpy, and
IGN have posted a
preview of Mirror's
Edge, the upcoming first-person shooter action-adventure game (PC, PS3, Xbox 360) that is currently in development at Digital Illusions CE. Here's a bit:
Although it could easily be confused with a first-person shooter at first
glance, it looks like Mirror's Edge will have only the tiniest bit of gunplay,
and only if you choose to go that route. Mirror's Edge is more a game about
exploration, puzzle-solving and melee action, built around about Faith's
acrobatic abilities. As you'd expect, Faith can jump and duck, but she can also
perform more complicated moves like powerslides, wall runs and jump kicks.
Momentum will play a big role in Faith's abilities: get enough steam going and
you'll be able to crash through a door or make an extra-long jump. For tricky
maneuvers, the game will sometimes slow down at certain moments to give you the
opportunity to be more precise and fine-tune your moves.
One cool aspect of Mirror's Edge is how the art design melds with the
on-screen action. As Faith navigates a world dominated by silvers and blues, the
color red plays a major role: when you look at something in the world and it
turns red, that means you probably want to head in that direction, whether it's
a fence or a pipe or, in one case, the landing gear of a helicopter chasing us
across the rooftops. As far as we saw, there was no health bar or really any
on-screen display of any kind; when you take any damage, the color simply
desaturates from the world for a few seconds while you recover (hopefully).
