Microsoft wants Windows 8 to relaunch PC gaming - briefly
(hx) 11:59 AM CET - Dec,23 2010 - Post a comment / read (16)
TechRadar claims that Microsoft will use the next version of its Windows operating system, Windows 8, to make a renewed effort for PC gamaing. Here's a taster:
A relaunched Games for Windows marketplace was a recent fillip, but it is the hiring of Rahul Sood, the founder of gaming computer brand Voodoo PC and previously an outspoken critic of the Redmond company's attitude towards PC gaming that underlines what TechRadar has been told about Windows 8.

"Windows 8 will represent a real new push into PC gaming," the source told TechRadar. "Gaming will be a key component for the whole OS."

Along with the new store, Microsoft has shown signs of waking from its PC gaming slumber in the course of 2010.

The announcement of a new Age of Empires game, along with Fable 3 and an updated Flight Simulator appear to be the green shoots of the new attitude.

I'll believe their intentions if they start pushing XBOX exclusives to the PC. Until then...

I have a bad feeling about Win 8...
If we follow the pattern of windows releases, then this has to be a crap like Vista, Millenium etc..

"Mainstream" Windows releases

95 - bad
98 - bad
ME - crap
XP < SP2 - bad
XP > SP2 - good
Vista - bad
7 - good

i really can't see a pattern here.

hopefully 8 won't be as unfinished as Vista and as crappy as Moron Edition. and hopefully it won't be just a small update, maybe that way they will be able to get rid of some mechanisms they use since 95.
as for "relaunching PC gaming", as psolord said, they won't get anywhere while treating PC as an inferior platform. consoles are basically PCs right now, and there is as much piracy on their xbox as on PC - so that's not really a problem as some of the developers try to make it sound. and hopefully, "relaunching PC gaming" won't mean having to pay for multiplayer, that would kill what they attempt to do on the spot.

Imo, 98 wasnt bad. Especially with sp2

If MS is going to bring gaming back to PC they need to secure it from people making hacks that piggy back on the back of DirectX and other parts of the system. There should be enough hacks out there for them to learn from their mistakes and make it next to impossible for people to hijack their OS. To leave it to 3rd parties like Punkbuster and VAC and other BS out there claiming to be anti-cheat is obviously not working. While I think game makers are not innocent by any stretch MS still needs to implement mechanisms game makers can use to further secure their games. Windows and gaming on PC will go nowhere unless the above is met with seriousness.

Sabot(04:24 PM CET - Dec,23 2010 )
Lol this is M$ we're talking about.
This company is about into supporting gaming on the PC as a chocolate fireguard will protect your home!
Guys, you criticise console gaming saying it's ruining PC gaming blah,blah... But it's M$ WHO are RUINING GAMING, they started it! They are the ones who make the OS for -the so-called- PC gaming evolution...yet directly attack it with their Xbox.
Sony,Nintendo etc make friggin games consoles which sell through SHEER gamers choice as they do not make an OS for PC that influences otherwise.
M$ do!!!
M$, because of sheer greed, stiffle the market for gamers -exclusives for the XBox but not for PC, who's fault is that then?
They buy-out dev's and publishers to fill their pockets, you faithfully buy the next 'gamers OS' and they kick YOU in the teeth. Not Sony or any of the others.
You sit there with a sweeping statement, accusing consoles of withholding game developement? I'm sorry but the PS1/2 was out before the XBox1 and yet it sold through choice and the PC still enjoyed it's HUGE sales and it's peak.
As soon as the Xbox was released IT stole the PCs thunder and its sales of games -American gamers binned the PC in their droves. The PS2 continued to sell millions without the XBox or PCs influence
M$ fault.. Fingers in too many pies just for profit, as it still stands today.
Sony etc are not 'just' another console company against M$, M$ want quantity over quality.
They don't care about PC gaming -as long as it continues to make them a profit in terms of 'Games for Windows' endorsements on hardware and boxes, they are happy. Sell an OS with a 'gamers OS' blag and they are happy.
You on the otherhand are suckered, you don't get a refund.

So on it goes...
Remember guys, M$ are the ones undermining gaming and always have.
Sony sells primarily for it's own console(s) and have for instance redifined 3D TV, blu-ray and of course been making specialist professional cameras and consumer products for decades before gate's could wipe his arse!
When you chose a TV or watch a film you don't go 'i hope it's made by M$', you go by reliability and quality and reviews.

M$ want YOU to own BOTH an Xbox AND a PC, that's their ulterior motive and of course profit.
Dis M$ for the state of gaming compaired to the PC, where as Sony have gone their own route and always have.
I own several PCs for older XP gaming and of course general PC work, but my PS3 is used exclusively for gaming and home cinema and shortly for 3D gaming and films -my choice and not influenced by bullshit lies by the likes of M$ with Win7 then 8 being the gamers OS.......what Sony says comes out the box, period!!

Say what you want, but it's denial and fact. Never understood why gamers suck-up to M$ and always eventualy criticise them down the line...it's like some sort of personality disorder???
They shout "It's Sony's fault..." For what?? Making a console seperate from the PC???. Oh the best games are on PC, yet dev's produce for the consoles. should they only make games for PC? then M$ jump on the console wagon and it's still the "consoles fault for the state of PC gaming" ROFLMAO!!!!!!!

Renton(04:32 PM CET - Dec,23 2010 )
It's funny that they talk about Windows Market Place wich is totally pathetic. The choice is team-up with Valve and Steam. If they are into PC Gaming (the 360 exclusives shows that they are not) they should work shoulder to shoulder with the most successful PC gaming industry out there, not compete against them.

bgione(07:07 PM CET - Dec,23 2010 )

You'd have to isolate game code from any type of communication from outside code (through some kind of sandbox). maybe some subsystem launching with the game that monitors behaviour and blocks access from 3rd party programs. also, it'd be best to verify core game files while connecting to multiplayer game/launching multiplayer component. and i think even using methods like this wouldn't stop hackers.

Csimbi(09:58 PM CET - Dec,23 2010 )
Win98 SE with all updates was great.
XP SP3 is great.
Windows 7 would be great with a functional UI (everything was messed up really bad), without all the bloatware (flashy crap and apps that no one ever uses) and proper backwards compatibility with XP apps and games. Most (including me) did not make the switch exaclty because of these issues.
Windows 8 will come eventually, there is no point speculating what will it be. If MS has some brain, it will listen to the customers and fix these issues, so users favouring XP could also step up. I still see Balmer as a blocking factor though.

In any case, MS is wrong about the need for a new OS to relaunch PC gaming. A new OS is not needed for that, and there is no need to relaunch it neither - it seems to be ok to me (all the games I intend to play have been release on PC and they are working great), though I do not care about a great deal of games (and idiotic controllers) that others just might. A keyboard, a mouse, a joystick and a wheel can do every game very well.

Tom(10:02 PM CET - Dec,23 2010 )
@Stumpus. Sony IMO is no angel. They f'd over there customers a number of times. OtherOS? Forget about that? Warranty only on slims not on fats? Plus that only gives away garbage games? Sony who looks for huge royalties on anything using bluray? Sony is no saint. DC Universe Online. Made for PC as well as PS3. $15 monthly fee for a game that they already ripped the biggest feature out of. Cross Platform? They rip that out and still stand to charge $15 a month? I should have just stuck with my Wii in the end. I'm not proud to own a PS3 to be honest. Sony is a bunch of crooks too.

@bgione
Yes it is about Windows not being secure. Consoles are secure and they are serious when it comes to cheating and being caught. Aimbots and wallhacks mostly manipulate existing DirectX files above and beyond game files. It's been like this for ages and MS has done ZERO about it. Isn't it funny too that MS Security Essentials can scan your whole HD and not pick up an aimbot and wallhack? This isn't the first time MS has said they will return gaming to PC. Personally I am tired of their BS.

bgione(10:49 PM CET - Dec,23 2010 )
@Tom - can You explain how to run an aimbot on a console?
as for DX being used for hacks - let's drop DX, hackers will find another thing to tamper with. as long as PC players are able to modify files that are in any way used by games - DX, openGL, drivers, game files - there will be cheats. on the other hand, complete blockade of game files modifications would kill modding. IMO this problem is not as easy as it is with consoles.

Tom(06:17 AM CET - Dec,24 2010 )
bgione> You know, it's not that Windows is less secure than consoles or something.

I don't know what you are talking about man. I am responding to your quip above. But heck, if you want to find out how why don't you track down these people and ask them. http://www.metacafe.com/watch/4237208/xbox_360_cod6_mw2_unlimited_ammo_and_aimbot_hack/ or just use google and find out. Console is not immune to cheats but when people are caught they are dealt with in the harshest way.

Thudo(11:06 PM CET - Dec,26 2010 )
The day hacking ends on the PC is the day the industry is finally a Robocracy! That will be a VERY dark day for civilization and one where creativity is controlled by the State. Modding = Hacking = DEAL WITH IT! Its always going to be part of our technological world and if its gone then we have finally surrendered our souls to Big Gov't/Corporations. MS OS'es ever to be secure? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh no.
