GamePen has written a new preview of Microsoft's Train Simulator. "Microsoft covers the bases with old steam-powered engines, and more modern diesel types and electric trains, giving you a range from the famous Flying Scotsman (the first train to break 100mph) to the romantic Orient Express to Amtrak's electric engines. If you think piloting a train is much easier than flying a jet, think again. The old steam engines in particular were troublesome to manage - such dangers as explosions and fire blowback were very possible and very deadly hazards. (Fire blowback is when a knucklehead forgets to close the fire door when entering a tunnel - the flames wash themselves into the engine cab.) Even controlling a modern electric train is a challenge when you have a schedule to follow, since you must deal with inertia and friction to make sure you obey the speed limits, or don't careen around a tight curve."
