Microsoft Launching Family Xbox Live Plans - console
(hx) 09:32 PM CEST - Jun,22 2010 - Post a comment / read (11)
Microsoft has unveiled an discount Xbox Live Gold membership subscription for four to solve the apparent problem of families sharing a single Xbox 360 and Live account. The $99 annual 'Xbox Live Gold Family Pack' subscription offers up to four Gold memberships controlled by a primary account which has the ability to dole out Microsoft Points and monitor activity. "Exclusive family content and discounts" are also promised.
An Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack includes:
 * Up to four individual Xbox LIVE Gold memberships for the price of two – (US) $99.99.
 * Family Center – a single, easy to use, destination for Family Settings and account management, accessible on the Xbox dashboard and on Xbox.com.
 * The primary account member has the ability to purchase and dispense Microsoft Points to other Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack members.
 * Activity monitoring reports viewable on Xbox.com to help encourage discussions about safer more balanced gaming and entertainment habits.
 * Simplified billing that applies all purchase charges to the primary account holder’s billing account and the ability to authorize purchases, helping to manage the family’s entertainment budget.
 * Exclusive family content and discounts.

The industry-leading, built-in Xbox 360 Family Settings are also being taken to the next level this November. It's Microsoft's goal to provide parents and caregivers with tools and resources to manage their children's gaming and entertainment experiences, and these features are available to all Xbox LIVE members:
 * Family Programming that removes all mature games, movies, and content from the dashboard, based on ESRB, Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) ratings and the TV Parental Guidelines system . Family Programming is password protected, and easy to turn on and off for each member. (Compatible with international ratings systems.)
 * Title exceptions – the ability to allow your family members to play specific games above the console’s designated ESRB rating if you deem appropriate. (Compatible with international ratings systems.)
 * Intelligent default settings for child, teen, and adult profiles. Xbox will automatically assign default privacy and activity settings for each member that can later be individually customized.
 * Family Settings are displayed prominently in the MyXbox channel. Current tools include the Family Timer, which allows you to control the amount of time - either daily or weekly - your children may use the console.

You'd have to have a pretty control freaking type of family that prefers censorship and likes to pay twice as much for a live membership for only 1 console. When if its just a gaming console what is the point wanting each member of your family to own an individual live account anyway, it just reeks of MS trying to find more ways of getting money from stupid people that find this rather good.

This is what happens when you tie individual accounts to things that should just be available anyway. At the most it should just be the console that is paid for Live enabled or not, ofc PC users aren't so dumb to pay for that kinda shit. Now you have to pay for an account and again if you want a different account for someone else. In the words of facebook sleazy CEO Mark Zuckerberg with close ties to Microsuck and oppressive scumbag governments "dumb fucks" comes to mind.

Won't even get into the insidious big brother spy camera stuff MS is pushing out here for the type of dumb social control and disintegrating family unit that prefers to use technology and anything else but good parenting. Also kinetic its not safe for kids to play outside, buy them virtual crap 'activity' games and keep them locked up and closely monitored instead.

Baconnaise(05:31 AM CEST - Jun,23 2010 )
Slow down koogle hehe.

It's a good way to rake in money and I would do the same if in their shoes. The plan doesn't sound bad if you live with roomies or similar situations. Control and monitoring is good for parents who want to keep their children on a leash. If you can't use it then don't buy it!

I'm not sure how a big brother rant comes into play here but bravo for connecting the dots to conspiracy :).

Tom(07:42 PM CEST - Jun,23 2010 )
Obviously Koogle has no kids, thank god. If I go to Xbox, which I definitely plan too, I am interested in these plans. See my little guy can/would be downstairs and on my PS3 getting into my account and playing BF without our knowledge. He isn't stupid, he turns down the volume etc. He's also been caught playing fps games on my PC thanks to new Windows 7 features that tracks it. Parental control or elevated type user accounts are always very important when you have kids. Just another case of Koogle shooting off his mouth with zero idea/experience.

really? and you'd know because...you just ass-umed it?

See my little guy can

oh jeez i think you have said enough now... I thought you were just an idiot before, but its much worse now you're a parent who relies on technology to do parenting and being a spying control freak. And yes I fully understand the idea/experience I just don't agree with it for many reasons.

You mean, if you have no use for it!, don't buy it. Otherwise you're implying a users ineptness in not being able to use it. Which is not the as MS put a lot of time into dumbing things down for a bigger market majority appeal.

Not that it won't be profitable, MS have already suckered in the clowns with the original Gold Live scheme that ties things to 1 user account instead of providing multiple accounts signups per live enabled console. They just did it the opposite way for more money and now they can provide a few more fail parental managing features and charge more under the guise that $100 is much better than $200 for 4 individual limited accounts tied to 1 main account.

Tom(01:21 AM CEST - Jun,24 2010 )
If you have kids that is scary. They won't only be totally out of it in terms of technology but to look at you as a mature figure, that's got to be the worst. You're clueless and come off on this site as some little punk ass wannabe techie with a chip on his shoulder. This opinion is not only mine but it's shared by a shit load of people I know who frequent this site for their news source.

lol right sure whatever, and you think that because I don't buy or support rubbish, which has nothing to do with 'technology' !! just marketing schemes like family live packs..

Give it up you never win these fights so why start them?, and its you who has been the punk ass aswel y'know, I keep to the topic if you can't handle my opinions that is your problem. Just don't blame me for not becoming a group think collectivist tard.

wow they must all be goons like you then but just spineless? either that or they don't exist. And lets not forget the people here who have opinions on you either eh. Anyway if they do exist please tell them Koogle says 'Hi' :P

Get them join in unless they prefer heavily modtarded censorship pro sites where they can hide, safe from opinions that might harm there 'fragile' little minds.

Koogle> You mean, if you have no use for it!, don't buy it. Otherwise you're implying a users ineptness in not being able to use it. Which is not the as MS put a lot of time into dumbing things down for a bigger market majority appeal.

I meant it in a general sense so yes. The dumbing down of services or products is generally a good thing as most of us want it simply put or short and sweet :). I do love customization most of the time but yes overall people want something to turn on or just work out of the box. They want to make money and I can't blame them.

Koogle> Not that it won't be profitable, MS have already suckered in the clowns with the original Gold Live scheme that ties things to 1 user account instead of providing multiple accounts signups per live enabled console. Agreed on the making money part. Parental controls aren't a bad feature set to implement. Why would I want my kids to be able to use or charge my credit card? Some kids will do this and some parents might let them. I don't want the opportunity for them to charge anything on my accounts and most parents would voice similar concerns. Doesn't really matter how well behaved your children are they make mistakes and some just don't care. We just disagree here on parental controls here. If it's implemented nicely it can be useful.

Back to Tropico 3 for me! :p

Tom(07:19 AM CEST - Jun,24 2010 )
I'm not trying to win anything. I'm stating a fact, your a punk with a chip on your shoulder and your opinion is usually filled with stupidity. I'm happy that they are doing it and when I move to Xbox from my ever crippling PS3, I'll bite because after reading more about it it's a good deal for my family and my kids. My PS3 for example has the lousiest child controls.

...yes. I forgot the kind setup MS made, that makes it so easy for them.. I mean you the user so that you can buy market place virtual items, and have your money drawn out of your account for points without any security control over it because its setup like that by design. No wonder parental management controls have to be 'put in place' with the added benefit of selling them as new extra feature for 'family pack purchasers' to manage such poorly designed crap in the first place, that really wasn't that hard to add the beginning and do properly.

MS have gotten to be geniuses at being sly in implementing dumb design that appeals to the easily pleased, and then slowly improving it over time to look like they couldn't possibly have just done a better job in the first place.

It just stinks of stupidity, sorry Tom, that's a generalized insult out to majority of its audience only too happy with what they get I presume....what I really mean is its fiendishly dirty marketing and product design by the xblox team :D

lol ok Tom, whatever you say, look someone has got to keep Microsuck afloat.

quote:

Could have had a better deal if the market and those that make it up weren't so gullible to accept such a bad deal in first place. Like I said it should be the console that is live enabled or not, allowing multiple accounts to be created for it. Not pay MS extra for each account (because its really costing them alot NOT).. and oh here is sweet deal noobs, $100 for 4 tied accounts..'wooohooo Thank you thank you, praise the Microscumopoly for they have delivered, and also like to censor*cough*' :P

And console child controls? 20+ years of consoles.. pfff no wonder society is getting more sick and screwed up, seriously just let the government and big brother corporations help you out.. you've got work work work to do.. too pay those taxes that they keep spending on your behalf without your say and on what they want :P And they don't agree with how you are bringing up your children, they just aren't dumb and sheltered enough, get them watching more TV and Games that they agree with and allow into the market so they stay indoors more. And they feel you're just not doing a good enough job and hear parent moans that they can't cope especially with the big bag world being too dangerous to let children outside. So they allow you to then 'control it' makes them look like they care :) With the added benefits for them in doing so. While children also get used to being under control (your control, that's the incentive for supporting it family man) and forever 'watched', gets them ready for society 2.0 the collective drone force forever under surveillance, right from home, indoctrinating education and to the workforce... nothing at all odd about that, its for there own protection :P

sorry too much conspiracy theory? Don't get me wrong I'm not bagging features that help if that is what you REALLY need to control games/time limits etc and under certain circumstances that might be the case, but you have to ask yourself why is it you really need those features in the first place. I'll leave you to think about it if you can 'critically think' that is. Anyway its pretty sad that technology has encroached that far into people's lives that they do.

(04:41 AM CEST - Jun,25 2010 )
well that little back and forth between you two is 5 minutes of my life im never getting back...

Anyway, this isn't all that amazing of a deal really. There are regularly deals on sites like slickdeals.net for 1 year of xbox live for $30, sold by newegg, dell, buy.com, amazon, etc. It'd be $20 more, but all the accounts would be their own, and have different renewals.

I didn't read the details on this, but if you went in on this with 3 other roommates, one of those would be the 'main' and the others would still be controlled by them?

Nobody put a gun to your head to read it so I personally couldn't give a shit if you wasted 5mins of your time.

I would wait anyhow and see if a deal comes out elsewhere. Naturally I wouldn't just go ahead and plunge in without looking at my options. I don't even have an Xbox yet!
