Microsoft Announces DirectX Raytracing - tech
(hx) 11:39 PM CET - Mar,19 2018 - Post a comment / read (7)
Today at GDC, Microsoft announced DirectX Raytracing or DXR for short. It’s basically the first step towards getting real-time raytracing into mass market games. The technology, that will be built into the current DirectX 12 API, has been developed in partnership with Nvidia, and promises to take a step beyond what is possible with the current base of 3D graphics, rasterization. According to Microsoft, this will “bridge the gap between the rasterization techniques employed by games today, and the full 3D effects of tomorrow.” It will also “open the door to an entirely new class of techniques that have never been achieved in a real-time game.”

Actually, Intel tried this years ago with "Larabee" and concluded that it's not viable.
Also, best selling games (WoW, minecraft, <insert_some_survival_bullshit_here, LoL) look like they were made 200000 years ago. Who needs ray tracing in video games? Have you seen CryEngine or latest UE engines?

I don't understand why m$ is wasting time on silly projects like these. It seems that they need someone like Balmer again, a cocaine induced madman, to steer them.

"Larabee" determined their conclusion with whatever tech was available at that time. Today is a different story. Additionally, raytracing gives a far more accurate level of detail and realism than current rendering methods which involve a lot more effort from the designer to make it look real. Yes both methods can look the same but with raytracing it requires far less effort to get to the same level of detail.

Raytracing was not feasible before because of the computing cost. That's different now with the video cards and DX12.

current engines, and some older ones, come real close to Ray T quality.
Back when Larabee was doing 640x480 @ 20fps (and lower) Ray T. demos, we were gaming in 60fps full HD on ~250$ GPUs. Those (capability) GPUs are now in the ~450$ bracket. Whatever Ray T. they do now with current hardware, you can expect performance to be at same ~20ish fps compared to similar thing done in, say, UE4 running it at twice the resolution and 60+ fps.
It's just the nature of complex computations done in RT.
Sure, they might be able to ray trace low precision shadows and refractions at reasonable resolutions, but add translucency, transparency, reflections...then multiply everything by power of 2 for each light source added...
You actually can do RT right now in blender and other 3D software. It's slow. As in 5-10fps slow (using cpu+gpu) in preview mode.

gx-x> Have you seen CryEngine or latest UE engines?
Pffft. Those are bloatware these days. Their legacy must die (so they can be reborn in a more desirable shape and form).
Unity3D seems to beat them all lately - it is extremely lightweight (both disk space and performance-wise).

True dat! :D

All in all, ray-tracing has its value, but not in gaming.
In FPS games you don't have time to admire the view - unless you are a fanatic with time to admire still images.
Simulators - maybe, unless it's a racing game, because then, again, you won't have time to admire the view.
In strategy, puzzle and platformers ray-tracing is a moot point.

MS should have focused on a good OS.
They fucked up Win10 so we are stuck with a dating Win 7 and home and a broken Win 10 in the office.
Let's hope Win 11 will be far better.

Win 11? You are clueless. LOL!
Really Win10 works perfectly for me @home on all 6 machines and my office works perfectly as well. Maybe you should employ IT people with a clue and grab yourself a windows for dummies book.

As for MS, apparently wasting their time.. looks like it was a joint project.. Damnit nVidia please just work on your drivers and putting out constantly price inflated video cards!!!

quote:
“It’s something that those of us in the graphics industry have dreamed about for the better part of two decades,” explains Nvidia’s Tony Tomasi. “What we’re going to do is take our first big steps towards real-time ray-tracing in games.

“The combination of RTX and DXR should enable developers to make incredible leaps forward in terms of real-time raytracing and start the developers working on - what I call - the next twenty years worth of graphics… I would expect that you’ll see games shipped this year that have real-time raytracing using DXR and RTX.”

You know Tom, I wrote this just for you so you can't claim I don't know what I'm talking about. Have at it.
Windows 10 is a disappointment, period.
