Metered Internet in Canada - 25GB Cap - tech
(hx) 10:38 PM CET - Jan,31 2011 - Post a comment / read (11)
Metered Internet usage (also called 'Usage-Based Billing') is coming to Canada, and it's going to cost Internet users. Starting on March 1, Ontario TekSavvy members who subscribed to the 5Mbps plan have a new usage cap of 25GB, 'substantially down from the 200GB or unlimited deals TekSavvy was able to offer before the CRTC's decision to impose usage based billing,' the message added. By way of comparison, Comcast here in the United States has a 250GB data cap. Looks like lots of Canadians can kiss that kind of high ceiling goodbye. And going over will cost you: according to TekSavvy, the CRTC put data overage rates at CAN $1.90 per gigabyte for most of Canada, and $2.35 for the country's French-speaking region. Bottom line: no more unlimited buffet. TekSavvy users who bought the 'High Speed Internet Premium' plan at $31.95 now get 175GB less per month.

WTF is this ? What is the point of this limitation ? Can anyone give some reasonable explanation ?
I cant believe that advanced countries have such limits on the net ?! Why ?
I here in Bulgaria, pay like 12 US dolars per month, for unlimited internet. And the speeds are really nice - we have internal and external speed.
For the rest of the worrld download speed is up to 400kb, internal 4mb ?!
 Cant dig this BS Canada do

Sabot(11:45 PM CET - Jan,31 2011 )
It's more likely the 'streaming' of movies PS3/Xbox/PC/TV and the downloading of films/games etc that are clogging the bandwidth???
Obviously those that don't work for sure.

I'm on an unlimited 50mbps and honestly would find it impossible -in a normal working week that me and my wife have- to ever, ever, ever get anywhere near 30gig PER MONTH download!

Because my country has a lot of useless government organizations that have too many stupid people working for them. The CRTC is like the MOST stupidest assholes around. People are already fucked over in Canada by shitty internet speed and then lack of choice.

Our country probably has the least internet providers in the world. Our bandwidth sucks compared to the US. Our providers even block us from running home servers, even though a lot do anyhow. I can no longer run a game server if I want because my upload rate is capped to a disgraceful level. You think cable companies etc would expand on their network and make things more robust? Fuck no, they sit there and raise prices and lower caps year after year. Where is the CRTC through all this? With their thumbs up their arse.

You should see our TV cable companies, or lack of I should say. One provider is forced to only do business to half the country because 2 other cable companies block them. Then we have to pay for cable channel packages filled with shit because we are not allowed or given a choice to choose what we want. Then the CRTC blocks us basically from watching Internet TV in the US to protect god awful local networks. We actually have laws between our countries that dictate what we can and can't watch across the border. It's fucking pathetic.

Another dumbass organization in Canada banned the song by Dire Straits because "1", yes "1" caller called in and complained that FAGGOT in the lyrics was offensive. The song was from 1985?! Like wow!

There are petitions going on about this bullshit internet crap and people are seriously pissed, so hopefully it does not come into effect.

Sometimes I am truly ashamed of the country I live in, really. So many fucking morons in this country hold jobs they shouldn't but what makes it worse, in critical positions they hold these jobs.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in CRTC meetings and major TELCOs board
rooms who run the Canadian internet backbones. What is the real issue
here?

As internet content becomes more sophisticated, so will the requirement
of bandwidth. Thats been said for years. National telecommunication
infrastructure is a large continuing investment shared by several
corporate and government entities (passed on to the consumer)
and thats largely understood as well.

So whats the deal? Are Canadians getting capped because the
telecommunication infrastructure is overloading and theres a need to
reduce the national bandwidth? Whats going to happen in years to come
when internet content evolves further?

As Stumpus said, 30 GB may be the a good cap for his family now but
a cap that size was monsterous five years ago, and unthinkable ten
years ago.

I dunno. I think this is the fruits of de-regulating/privatization of the Canadian telecommunications industry. Canadians will continually get
nickle and dimed.

Anyone remember or know about the earlier days of Canadian
telecommunications when Bell Telephone in the 1950s rolled out
the TransCanda Microwave Network? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trans_Canada_Microwave
Similar in context today. Alot of it was funded by Government dollars
and driven by well thought out need. Today, however, seems
not to be so well thought out and driven by questionable intents.

It's because a freemarket doesn't actually exist, where competition can popup to kick the asses over-grown government freeriding parasites. And by freeriding parasites I don't be the unemployed (most of them don't have jobs because of government cannibalism in the first place), I mean the real wealthy criminal elite fuckers who abuse law and policies for their advantage and the government salaried employee bums who take paychecks for doing pretty much sod all that is productive, just counter productive jobsworths especially legal twats and law enforcement revenue collecting drones. All because the various arms of these enterprises have a hand deep up the ass of your scum puppet government, while manipulating the judicial and media twats to influence public opinions and polices into law which benefit them the most by putting money hurdles/bureaucracy in the way of anyone who might want to get in on providing some competition to established business racket.

Goes for every area, but telecom industries seem to take the fucking cake and get noticed more than other energy and utility companies. Privatized profits, public funding.... with scum government selling off what is very often public-ally tax funded infrastructure off to the private corporates. And don't forget the banks in the background those fuckers are even more responsible for causing debt that has people allowing their government to get away with what they do... seriously general public are just fucking stupid not to start throwing out their useless lying governments who work towards another agenda, mainly your technocratic enslavement, they don't work for you, and they are never held accountable for the lies that get them votes.

Oh and 25gb per month... seriously I don't know what the fuck is wrong with the general public, they are morons, obviously when they start watching the daily lamestream lies and degenerate drama shows over the internet they might be like.. ooh 25g is a bit shit innit, hmm what am I doing getting double dipped paying taxes and paying for these rip off service charges..where is it all going *oh please government do something* Government: Sure can :) ....and that right there is the problem, people always wanting government to muscle in on everything.... expanding like cancer for the establishment that really has the most influence and control, while the surrounding salaried largess busy body parasites go along for the ride, complicit in the destruction it causes and the lies used to keep it going while doing pointy fingers at anything else but them, helped by the media to deflect attention where the half truth is good as lie, but plenty of lies told often seem to have the public doing fuck all about it. While things move onto another day and nothing is ever turned around to where the real problem lies, government.

So until that changes, consolidation of wealth and power will continue to be the problem and you'll get shafted more.

Interesting how Canada and Australia are *cough* Crown scum.

And arstechnica.com that site has some of the worst publishing moron authors around, bunch of cretinous shit heads.. site should be called arseholetechnica.com then again, up against Time magazine, Wired and rest of the rag tag deceptive lying media shit heads who glorify state law scumbaggery perhaps its not the worst, just another distorted world reality of garbage they promote and manipulate.

psolord(12:53 PM CET - Feb,01 2011 )
What the hell? Why are they capping people's internet? Fuck off retards!

Just a reminder, you need around 25GBs just to download Bad Company 2 and Dead Space 2, perfectly legally off Steam.

Now imagine if you had to download the pirated version first, to give the game a test, since the publishers do not take their heads out of their asses and do not opt for a perfectly legitimate DEMO before the games' release.

Thank God that I don't have a plan either. Downloaded the whole Mission Impossible series the other day weighting in around 60GBs lol. Maybe that's why they are imposing these caps. If you donwload 6 matroskas per month at 4.37GBs plus 10 episodes of your favorite series, House, V, Dexter, True Blood, etc then you are quickly at ~40Gbs. If you ad the Games, demos, youtube it that, ZOMFG you easily go up to 80Gbs. Are these guys stupid or what?

On the other hand, an organization where I live, sued a website for distributing subtitles from various series. Note here that the Subtitles were made by the members, lol.

So they just took off and got the server to an out of the country domain and problem solved. I wish that once in my life I come across one of these bastards and he tells me that he works in such organization. I swear to God I will make him bleed where he stands.

For once, i agree with you guys, this is taking the crap, it really is, i may not even be in america, but if this his London, i would be mightily pissed, i mean i hope the prices have gone massively to compensate, if not, then its outright robbery.

tride(03:19 PM CET - Feb,01 2011 )
The way i see it they are trying to get more money from people. And if this works there they might try it anywhere in the world.

Canada doesnt have that much of population, compared to USa for example, and yet they put such restrictions ?
If they say this is a way to battle piracy - then this will be the most stupid thing ever pulled on people!
If they battle piracy this way, by paying for a GB transfer, then users should be able to download the movies, music, games for free - since they pay for it!

But, this is just a plane robbery and the people will take it. Nobody will get their arses of the chairs to protest and kick asses, they will simpli get along wth it. Restrict them selfs and adapt... thats the way modern politics work.
Small steps and people take it...

If they are saying that its too expensive the internet become, then why not make a bether infrastructure.... fakin progress or something...

And if you come to think about where the internet is going - HD videos on Youtube, Vimeo and other - a video might end up to 500mb to 2gb (on Vimeo), internet radio, internet services like Steam. Internet gaming and os on so on....
You end up with those 50gb per month in just couple of days!
Here is my little test i did today!
Up time 5 hours. Only browsing and internet radio - 900mb....
And this is with no torrents downloaded!
And this means that i have to limit my self to listen radio for hour or two a day  1 Youtube vid per day.... or on every two days....or per week if its tooo big HD

Oh maaan, i pity the canadians :( Poor basterds! Go out and fakin kill someone, ffs!

BT had caps on 30gig per month going back about 3-4years and used to basicaly cut people off if they went over their quota regularly, there was an exodus to Telewest and Sky during that time lol
After 3pm and during evenings (peak) all providers tend to throttle back download speeds. It has been the norm for years.
I've been with Virgin (formerly; United Artists,Telewest Blueyonder) for about 18years now. In the old days of dial-up you got 2hrs then were 'kicked off' and had to redial in to try and get connected to the fastest/nearest lowest ping.
One thing that Virgin have never done though and that is capping limits.
We have LoveFilm -from launch, on our TV,Blu-Ray player and PS3 -as well as PCs. We watch weekly films streamed and i download demos/content to my PS3.

The latest from Virgin is the Tivo

quote:
The box has a 1TB hard drive, which Virgin says is large enough to store 500 hours of standard-definition programmes (it hasn't published a number for hi-def shows). Port-wise, there are two USB sockets, one HDMI, one Scart, an optical audio out, and an Ethernet jack. There are three tuners, so you'll be able to record two different programmes while watching a third. Only two will be enabled at launch -- the third being activated with a software update in 'early 2011'.

The box has its own 10Mbps cable modem, which means it doesn't need to use your household broadband connection to stream video. That means your Internet won't slow down while you watch TV, and it also means you don't need to buy Virgin's broadband to use the service.

In my country we never ever had any caps on the cable/LAn net...
Currently there are caps on 3G net and some wi fi providers, but they are not popular here - the cable rulez!
And you guys mean to tell me that Canada cant fakin upgrade their systems/infrastructure ??? WTF is this bullshit!
They just want to make money and keep it in stone age!
On the website, this info came from, i read people saying that there is too much trafic and the IP cant handle it ? WTF ?!
This is so stupid and lame explanation, and people bite this bullshit..... i cant believe it!
Here the torrent site dominate the internet traffic... the whole Balkans are sucking stuff from our torrent sites and still there is no fakin problem - and we are a fakin 3rd world fakin country mates....
So, dont fakin eat those shity explanations they try to sell you!
Stand up and fakin shout your voices!

you are ~500 years too late to complain. Enjoy what freedoms you have, while you still have them.

You know, back in the "good old days" when first banks were formed in England, it was forbidden for a bank to charge anything except for maintenance costs. The idea was to create jobs and trading fluidity, not to legalize loan sharks. But then, oh well, financing wars behind doors proved to be more effective for banks so King of England gave them a "bit of freedom" to tax the loans to recover that market fluidity. At that exact point free men seized to exist in this world. It's just a carefully managed illusion of freedom.
And most of you just keep feeding that illusion by burning your credit cards on stuff that you can't actually afford thinking that is what separates rich countries from poor ones, while the poor ones slave for that ability of yours to be "rich". For instance, one worker in Ford can't produce one car (if he had the materials, tools and knowledge) per year, yet he is payed 10 cars like that per year. So who pays 9 cars for him? Machine assembled in poor country by 50 men who are together payed less than that one Ford employee per month.

Internet is no different. It's just a product that sells. Owned by companies, but with difference that there is no poor guy to compensate for over-usage or bandwidth of a rich guy.
Sorry, but we can't pedal the bandwidth for you :P

on the other note, limiting is ok but 25GB???? That's just too low. I am guessing they have a plan they will introduce later, plan that will reveal that steam purchase and download is (for example) not counted into that limit.
