Valve has posted an update on the Steam security breach that happened last November:
Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

We continue our investigation of last year's intrusion with the help of outside security experts. In my last note about this, I described how intruders had accessed our Steam database but we found no evidence that the intruders took information from that database. That is still the case.

Recently we learned that it is probable that the intruders obtained a copy of a backup file with information about Steam transactions between 2004 and 2008. This backup file contained user names, email addresses, encrypted billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. It did not include Steam passwords.

We do not have any evidence that the encrypted credit card numbers or billing addresses have been compromised. However as I said in November it's a good idea to watch your credit card activity and statements. And of course keeping Steam Guard on is a good idea as well.

We are still investigating and working with law enforcement authorities. Some state laws require a more formal notice of this incident so some of you will get that notice, but we wanted to update everyone with this new information now.

why do they keep credit card information at all?! If I pay something, it's done, delete the bloody CC information. What are you going to do with it? Keep it as an invitation for hackers?!

Have to agree with you, while they will likely admit it's for your convenience it is pretty stupid they keep it on file. I don't mind having to input my credit card each time. I can't remember if they actually got an option in there to delete your credit card information.

Oh course you don't mind, who would mind? it's for your own safety. If someone is lazy, he/she can use something like roboform to store information locally. Still safer then on the internet...and at least company is not to blame if you get hacked. I mean, if I were running steam, I would tell admins no to store CC data, only basic transaction data, for the bookkeeping.

It has to be kept for a period of time -proof of purchase etc plus of course if it's stolen, for legal reasons. Shops do it -as in MILLIONS of transactions.
It's up to STEAM et al, to suitably encrypt it, but since it isn't exactly in the public domain and on the high street, then they deem themselves to be low risk.... Ha,ha....
Sooo... they spend little on security.
I don't understand why people would use a CC on sites like STEAM, M$ or PSN. Your plain and simply ASKING for trouble, on your laptop,PC or through hacking.
A network retail purchase scratch card is the best thing out there. Input virtual amount to wallet and that's it. Hacked? so what. No personal details are tied to your account and they can't use your funds as they are tied to your account and can't be spent on the high street. No brainer.
Use Paypal instead ffs!!

proof of purchase? Hmm...nothing proves that person on the other side has the right to use the CC info and pin code/security code. Owner could have a gun to his head etc. Banks keep records of your transactions, store only needs CC number, date&time, what was CC used for and amount payed. No need to keep name (bank has it tied to CC number), address especially pin code. Unless they have a picture of the user, all that info is useless in preventing theft.

I agree that using CC is not very smart, debit cards or paypal is better solution, although, PayPal charges a fee if I am not mistaken (I don't have PP, not available in my country)
