Chaps at Computer and Video Games have posted
an interview with Electronic Arts' lead designer Christopher Cross as he
talks about Medal of Honor Allied Assault Spearhead, the upcoming expansion pack
to the hit WWII first person shooter. Here is a bit:
CVG: We've read that you're doing work on enemy AI which is good news, because a lot of people were complaining that enemy AI in the original game was too "perfect", especially in Sniper Town...
Cross: Yeah, Sniper Town was a bitch [laughs]. It's one of those things like... the way I usually approach AI design is that you have to make them human - we're in a situation where there is pretty much nothing but humans. Your expectations are completely different when facing them to facing an alien say, so we have to make them believably human and, I believe, believably stupid.
They have to make human mistakes, but not in a mechanical, dumb kind of way. We really want to make it like, if they miss then they have to re-adjust because they haven't quite got the aim right, and then they might miss again and so on - as opposed to being crack-shots.
