Maxis on SimCity 4 Internet Play - briefly
(hx) 07:32 PM CET - Jan,29 2003 - Post a comment / read (3)
Since Internet Play at simcityscape.com was not ready at the time the game was released, and is currently NOT ready, some people are really pissed off. Zenbeer69 made a series of 5 different phone calls to both EA corporate, EA tech support and Maxis tech support. Here is what he found out: "I was given the option on the phone to return the game to Maxis, postage at my cost, to receive an unopened box version of the game in 7-10 days to return to Best Buy (fortunately 20% restocking fee only applies to large ticket items like computers and TV's). So If I decided to return the game I'm out $10 for FedEx to send you the game." so If you think you got ripped off by purchasing the game before the Internet play option was ready you can return the game to Maxis:  EA Customer Warranty, PO 9025, Redwood City, CA 94063. And here is an answer from MaxisDevinoch (free registration is .required to see this post), who seems to be someone from Maxis:
We are working on SimCityscape as we speak. We do not give timeframe estimates because estimating timeframes in this industry is a BAD idea. If we were to give you a timeframe and we have to push it back, people claim that we are not working hard enough, or being untruthful with them, when in fact, we were expecting to make that date and did not. Software development is a very fluid thing and many things change on an hourly, if not minutely, basis. We are not "evading" the situation. Any time you want to check on the status of SimCityscape, you can always push the button inside of the game which will take you to the page where that feature will eventually be. I'm sorry that it's not ready yet, but sometimes these things take time, and we want to have the feature at its finest for its launch.

Anything related to EA deals with piss poor technical support. Just like their Medal of Honor game. The game could have perhaps squished HalfLife out of the popularity charts, but instead EA decided to screw around its players and not give updates and ignore obvious cheats and exploits. I blame it all on EA. they are a lousy company and next time you go to buy a game and it's branded with EA. Do yourself a favour. Put it back on the shelf. Graphics are one thing, but support is the biggest.

To be honest, I never meant to be ay sort of crusader for "where is the Internet Play option" on this game. The fact remains that my original message concerning this topid was almost immediately erased from the simcity 4 forum, and only after I vocally complained to 5 different people about this did I get any answers. My current post was pushed off the main board page, and 6 of the 12 replies to the second posting I made were deleted earlier today. Maxis was so hot around the collar that they demanded to know who told me that "the servers are not even installed" for http://www.simscapecity.com, which i refused to do. I'm sure the employee that told me this was being honest, but I'm not about to have someone lose their job over it. I blame EA's management for releasing an incomplete game. I bought this game specifically to play online, and I have been nothing but disappointed in the fact that internet play options were highly touted on all the review boards and magazines, and it was NOT ready when the game went on sale. It's the equivalent of buying a house, and the owner says he's taking the roof with him after you paid him, and he'll bring it back for you to use after the winter is over. I am sorely disappointed in Maxis' and EA for this "vaporware" online play feature.

It's not Maxis. It's EA. EA has ruined the launch of too many games. EA don't give a crap what anyone says. Incompetance has always been EA's way. Screwing customers, leaving customers in the dark, incredibly slow patching and marketed but missing features are becoming predominant with anything realeased by EA. I feel sorry for Maxis, they make good games, just too bad they are all wrapped up with EA. I personally bought the game for single player and for that it's not bad, but I know many who got it for online and were very disappointed. Especially more so that it didn't say on the box that 'online' wasn't available yet.
