Mark Rein: Windows Vista Should Be 64-Bit Only - briefly
(hx) 04:27 PM CEST - Sep,05 2006 - Post a comment / read (6)
C&VG has some quotes from Epic Games' VP Mark Rein where he gives his opinions on Microsoft's upcoming Windows Vista OS:
Well, that's all fine and dandy and so three cheers for Microsoft and Windows Vista then? Well, pretty much, although speaking further on Vista, Rein revealed he has a few issues with it - in particular that, in his view, MS has missed an opportunity to move the market forward into the 64-bit era by releasing a 32-bit version of Vista.

"I'm bitterly disappointed that they're shipping a 32-bit version of Vista - I think that's very short-sighted, I really don't see the point of it," Rein told us. "I think they [Microsoft] kind of capitulated to Intel... I think Intel put the squeeze on Microsoft and said 'We're still going to do some 32-bit chips, you've got to do a 32-bit version'."
In other news he confirmed that they are planning a follow up to their successful 'Make Something Unreal' competition:
Speaking to C&VG recently, Rein said: "People ask me 'will there be another nVidia $1,000,000 Make Something Unreal contest?' Sure, we'll round up some sponsors again and hopefully have another big, huge mod contest." The Unreal honcho continued, saying that with Unreal Engine 3 as the platform, his expectations are even higher for the contest: "This time I think it's going to be spectacular," he said. "You see so many companies have licensed the technology, mainly because of how great the tools are and how productive and creative they can be with these tools, and it's going to be that much more-so for the mod guys."

i think Mark Rein is a moron, i don't think he even bother considering how many people still run on 32bit. Forcing people to switch with a product that has few incentives to switch over from XP could be a terrible mistake and I doubt Microsoft would be willing to take that risk. If there was a pie chart with numbers using 32bit and 64bit, sadly 32bit would most likely dwarf 64bit...hell im still using 32bit and i aint planning on upgrading for at least another few years. Why doesn't mr epic games go and make a game soley for 64bit ;p

darknothing(07:07 PM CEST - Sep,05 2006 )
dude 32bit is outdated... you can still use win xp wich is also outdated.

64 bit is whats hot right now.. you dont see many or any new 32bit CPUs anymore.
microsoft should be concentrating on the 64bit environment

Genoism(12:41 AM CEST - Sep,06 2006 )
outdated? Not quite, how many programs take advantage of 64bit? Not a whole lot, not at all. Having a faster processer means crap when u can't take advantage of it.

I see plenty of 32bit cpus btw, lots of dual cores mostly, but 32bit. Obviously the companies are trying to push for 64bit but until more software supports AND takes advantage of it, its unlikely that an OS will make it required. Additionally, if vista required 64bit i can't imagine how many of my programs wouldn't run properly. They say that 64bit is backwards compatable with 32bit but thats not always the case and quite often a program that worked fine will stop.

Just because something is 'outdated' doesn't mean its useless. Wordpad is outdated like hell...but i still use it, all i need is something that opens up fast, clean and simple. Its not about whats new its about whats most effecient.

64bit is now, we already have 64bit cpu's, reitterating what darknothing said. Mark Rein is just talking about what actually has to happen for Windows. You know as well as I do that 64bit windows is gonna have 32bit in there. As soon as you add in compatibility you have 32bit. I welcome 64bit only.

It's not about YOU being able to play games and it ain't about YOU and your 32bit machine.. 64bit is something that has to happen. As far as I'm concerned, it's progress and a good way to clean the slate!

I didn't bother to fully read what I said, but I can probably aim at it non the less.
I understand and agree with him - yet the picture is a bit deeper then that...

Since Microsoft, more less forced, makes it's OS with compability in mind, the transition is hard - one should understand so much, atleast, but it dosen't help that they neglect so totally the x64 platform by not making any solid advancments with processing, handling and developing applications that fully uses it.

This gives a mixed message to developers who, for gold and dwarf beards in the wolrd, develop x64 games and applications but dosen't have a solid platform to use it on.

This I firmly can say since Microsofts handling of the x64 version of Vista - it's a goddamn trainwreck - full of the baby illnessess that plauged XP x64 and some other fun stuff.
The x86 version is all dandy and super cool - but Hell incarnate is any Windows, or other OS, in it's x64 form.

Lack of poor software platforms = lack of applications = lack of support.

Bah!

Gooooood - I need sleep... 5:44 in morning and I can't sleep... sitting instead typing posts...

There would be a heap load of $hit hitting the fan if MS *didn't* support 32bit! Would do you think happened when XP was released? A mass exodus to it from Win98? Wrong! nearly 3/4 of businesses and home users wouldn't budge from '98 -hence why it had a very large stay of execution.

Sorry but MS doesn't tell anyone to move or jump when they *say* jump.

Again just because 1 person is crying out for 64bit, 100 more are not.

Then we have the fact that -unlike XP Home/Professional- we have several MORE versions of Vista (5 i think?); ranging from a *basic* internet, home user version to a VERY expensive and hardware HUNGRY version for games, a damn sight more expensive than XP Home

I can assure you that, as was the case from Win98 to XP, there will be folks doing (attempting) dual-boot. Do you think i'm prepaired to bin dozens of 32bit titles that wont work on a 64bit OS? Exactly!

Games JUST don't stop being made a year or so before Vista get's launched and then all get converted to 64bit LOL

Remember this **IS** being touted as a GAMES platform, so Mark Rein is a narrow minded twit aiming at his own companies interest -as per usual.....

Configuring Software Raid Within Windows 10 - Most computer users have no need for more than a single drive in their computer, or perhaps a few individual drives if additional storage space is required. There are certain workflows and use cases where features of a RAID – like larger total volume capacity or data redundancy – may be extremely helpful. For large arrays, redundant boot drives, or advanced RAID modes we strongly recommend using a dedicated hardware controller card, but for simple configurations like mirroring or pooling there are options within Windows 10 which can be used without needing special hardware. This guide will cover a couple of those options and how to set them up. (1162 hits)
How To Solve Windows 10 Crashes In Less Than A Minute - Just to be clear, this article deals with system crashes, not application crashes or system hangs. In a full system crash, the operating system has concluded that something has gone so wrong (such as memory corruption) that continued operation could cause serious or catastrophic results. Therefore, the OS attempts to shut down as cleanly as possible – saving system state information in the process – then restarts (if set to do so) as a refreshed environment and with debug information ready to be analyzed.
